My doctor put me on the Mediterranean diet.

I went to the doctor 2 days ago (not to my oncologist, but to a gastroenterologist) and I was happy to learn that some problems that the PET CT showed and had worried the oncologist were nothing but age and the normal effects of chemotherapy. But he also said that a great part of the pain I feel was overweight that was bothering the scar tissue of the lymphoma. So it´s diet for me and exercise. Today I have started my diet and the doctor said I didn´t need to go to a nutritionist as I knew a lot about food. So he suggested to check the Mediterranean diet online and follow it or find another one that suited me. I had seen it ´but always posponed starting to diet. Do you know of any diet that helped you? What was it? Share.

I don't like the word diet and the negative connotations that often go with it. If you look at it as a lifestyle change to eat only healthy foods and leave alone any unhealthy foods that you might have consumed in the past you should be ok. Try to go all natural. I know you do that a lot of the time already, but the less processed foods you consume, the less likely you will need a "diet" per se. I know when I was living in Asia, I ate what the locals ate (not so much the "street foods" since many of them were fried). It was mostly vegetables with rice and a little bit of meat compared to the greasy burgers and fries I often at back home. Not to say that I never eat like that now, but I try to eat more home made foods and less store bought junk. What is included on the Mediterranean diet?

That sounds like a healthy lifestyle change. I finally made a beef stew in the crock pot yesterday and it is pretty good. I also found some chicken and fish recipes on one of the grocery store websites and it included a shopping list so I will try a couple of those. I hope I can get away from all the processed foods that I have been eating for convenience sake. Nice thing is I have been trying to get out more often and do more than sitting on the computer all day. One of the things I have been doing doesn't change the sedentary part of my life but I started working on cross-stitch again and it is moving right along. I hope that goes well for you! Have a great week!!!

I had a very adecuate weight according to my height until I quit smoking, a few years ago. I ate so much candy the first 2 months that I put on the 20 extra pounds I have. Now that I have led a very sedentary life last year, fat has replaced muscle and that fat pushes the scar tissue of the lymphoma and it`s psinful. I don`t eat much processed food, but I love to eat. I will have to cut servings and exercise. Mediterranean diet includes veggie, fruits and fish mainly. The no-no are basically fried foods and fats.

What ever diet you find will not work if you don't make up your mind. And stick to it. Do it for months. That's the hard part. I was on a diet last year and another time 4 years ago. I kept the program of eating 5 times a day. Two of them being fruit. You can do it. Start now!

I do not like to diet, I think diets are not necessarily healthy for you unless you are under the watchful eye of a creditable medical professional. Not done properly, diets can have ill effects. I favor more eating a well balanced diet and exercising 3 or more times a week. If you eat well and exercise plus avoid stress, your life will be, for the most part, a healthy one.

I am checked by a doctor. In fact, I have two main doctors for my problems as I have a lymphoma (currently on remission) and even what I eat must be decided by doctors. Last year I was on a very special diet while I was on chemo.

I think the Mediterranean diet is one of the very best. Several of our Doctors have recomended it. Fish is the hardest thing for us to get, it's very expensive and often not even available. We getvery tired of canned fish.

There are some not so expensive fish here. But they are mostly white fish and you get hungry soon after eating them. I think I will also fill my tummy wih broth.

Honestly, it has been better for me in my own experiences to add activity to my life and simply moderate what I am eating instead of simply following a strict diet. I know that this is not really helping you out very much, except that I am telling you that in addition to following the diet that your doctor has suggested, you should also make sure that you are getting more exercise than you've been getting before you started trying to lose weight.

When I was younger I was overweight and just changing what I ate (no fatty foods or fast food, limiting sugary sodas, when I would go out i'd always choose healthy choices) and exercise - not much 15 minutes of a cardio & weight mix - helped me out a lot. I am interested in starting weight lifting and not bulking up, but getting strong (if that makes sense), so I have been looking at different diets. There is one diet called the Keto diet that helps you loose weight super fast. It's quite an interesting diet because it is the only one that teaches your body to burn fat before anything else in your system. You loose a lot of weight very fast. It was originally meant for people with epilepsy (you can find more general information here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ketogenic_diet and here http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/dorian6.htm). There are several plans available on the web if you are interested. Since you are seeing a nutritionist though, they should be able to explain everything to you in detail. If I were you, I would research everything you can before starting any fad diet. They do not work for every person. You need to find out what will work for you and what you can change in your diet that will help you loose weight a healthy way.

As diet per se,I have used some types of diet, one that are low in carbohydrates but, as for your doctor, Mediterranean diet is actually good diet because it reduces the risk of heart disease. In fact, a recent analysis of more than 1.5 million healthy adults demonstrated that following a Mediterranean diet was associated with a reduced risk of overall and cardiovascular mortality, a reduced incidence of cancer and cancer mortality, and a reduced incidence of Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases. I know it's kinda hard to change lifestyle speciallyif you are already used to it. But its for your own good. Patience, Determination and discipline is really the key to sucess.

I read about that too, but the best part of it is that you can eat a lot of different foods. There are few things that you are not allowed to eat and the amount of food you eat is more important.

I need to begin a diet myself, but, I am lousy at dieting, I simply love to eat, and eat well, but, health is first. Many people has said me about the mediterranean diet, and I have been looking in the internet myself, and I found interesting to try, since it has a lot of sea food, wich I love, and fruits and vegetables, wich I also love eating. I have never been as discipline to follow a very estrict diet, so, I am afraid I can´t help you much in this, but, about exercising, I recomend you the walks, and, if you are not much into exercise by itself, I mean, follow a routine, maybe a physical demanding hobbie, as for me, building mechanical devises help me a lot, maybe you would like something like garnening, or other things like that. Another group is joining a group, I say so, because exercisin by myself is too boring for me, and I easily quit, and I have found better this way. Either way, I wish you the best.

Walking will be a good way to start for me. I`d love to have some kilos less in Spring, when the weather is perfect for gardening. I also love fish and seafood. And I just will not make mayonaise or buy butter. Fried food will have to be out too

I will stop using butter, mayonaise and fried food. I like all that, but it will help alot, I think. As for carbohidrates, I`ll take smaller portions.
