When I visited with my brother last week we went bowling.

This is a popular indoor sport in the US and other places, I know. Until I met my hubby all I had ever heard about was the regular ten pin, ten frame bowling. I have learned that there are candle pins and duckpins and in our early history as a nation there was nine pin bowling. Hubby is a big fan of bowling and is quite good at it. There is also a yard game, "bocce ball" and one called "skittles" that is a yard game or a pub game in England. So do you like to bowl? Does your country have the same or a similar game where you roll some kind of ball to knock objects down? Are you good at it? My brother and I are less than average, but his wife, and my husband are excellent bowlers. We all have lots of fun when we go, though and it is good exercise.

I read somewhere that Canada also has five pin bowling. I have not done anything except the regular ten pin bowling, and I enjoyed it.

I use a twelve or maybe fourteen pound ball. I often find myself thinking I need to lift weights with my other hand to balance it. Hubby uses a sixteen pound ball.

gee I didn't know that other countries didn't have the smaller balls, when I played the few times that I did it was with the small balls.

When we go it is always with my brother and if we make it three times a year we are doing good. We either have time or we have money, we seldom have both.

I have seen people on television play bocce ball. I think I would prefer bowling. I've not been in forever. I've always wanted to do that kind of bowling where you turn the lights out and everything is kind of neon glow in the dark. Do they call it disco bowling? I don't remember. Growing up, in the summer after Wednesday night church we would all go to the local bowling alley and play on different teams. Good memories, thanks for bringing them up.

Bowling was always a good youth group and church camp activity. I have never done the lights out thing. I think around here they call it "cosmic bowling" but disco bowling makes as much or more sense. Of course now you take me back to memories of going roller skating and they would have the disco ball and couples skate. . . I have not done that in about twenty years. I am afraid I would injure myself.

I'm a gutterball person. I find bowling really hard on my wrists. I've watched Canadian bowling and American pro bowling. If you start routing for someone, it can be fun to watch.

Oh, I frequently clean the gutters. I do not get to bowl often at all. I do not watch many sports, but maybe if I would watch bowling my form would improve. I am not consistent at all.

Watching others might help make you consistant. A room with a surround mirror so that you could see yourself might help, too. I don't know, you'd have to ask the people who seem to never get gutters.

Last year around november and december our office held this bowling tournament for its employees every Saturday and then again i was able to prove myself how much i sucked at any sport with a ball. lol. It is actually enjoyable to play that. but i do really am bad at it hahahahaha that i rarely get to strike and most of the time it goes to the side. oh well it was still fun!

This will really confuse you now but my brother Danny used to be a very good Crown Green Bowler and has won Junior Waterloo in the past. The game involves the white Jack and the idea is to get two black woods as close to the white Jack as possible. My brother had to give the game up when he started drinking too much and, ironically, now that he's stopped the local bowling green is no more. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bowls

Hi GardenGerty, I never knew that there were so many terms in bowling. That was the new thing that I learned today. I have not heard of the other games at all. The only yard games that I know about are croquet, volleyball and batmitten. I am not good at bowling but my mom always tried to put me in a bowling league when I was younger and I hated it! I would get like 48 points! LOL! Many of my family has played on leages. My grandma, and grandpa. Once I went bowling with my husband and he ended up being really good at it and never played before. Its just not my thing I guess.

My husband grew up in Michigan and Rhode Island, and I am not sure where he did the other varieties that I did not know about. I am thinking Michigan. I have been to a candle pin lane one time, while traveling with him. I am all over the board with how I bowl, but let's just say I keep very clean gutters. I think it depends on how strong your wrists are.

Thats cool that he used to live in MI. Its a pretty tough state right now. We have the highest gas prices among other things. So its a good thing that you guys are not still here!! I kept the gutters clean also! And always seemed to get some weird pattern of pins knocked down making it hard to get any of the other ones. I never thought of my wrists part in it, but it makes sense!

Hi GG, I haven't been bowling in YEARS! Now that I'm thinking about it, I'd love to go bowling again. It's sooo much fun! Maybe I'll tell my daughters to go one night with the hubby's and we'll all have a good time. I bowled when I was a kid and was on a league for a few years. It's a very good exercise, like you mentioned. I was ok at it, can't say I was above average, but I guess just average. I don't know anything about candle pins...duckpins I thought were for kids? Guess I still have a lot to learn, haha!

We went somewhere back East where they had candle pins, I guess. Those are straight up like candles almost. Or maybe it was in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Hubby says duck pins are small versions of regular pins and one of them uses a ball about the size of a grapefruit, with no holes. It is good fun to get out with family.

its a wonderful game. i never played until my late last hubby had me go with him. he was an excellent bowler and i still have some of his trophies, badges and 200 plus ring. i never bowled worth a darn and cried some times and he kept saying it didnt matter. so eventually i quit. although i did continue to go to the tournements in vegas with him. we went every year to one or 2.

Yep, I do not play worth a darn, and never really did go bowling much at all until I married this husband. Just before he moved here he had bowled in a league and was supposed to get a special commemorative ball as a prize. They sent him one that was too light for him. He met me about that time so he gave me the ball and bag and we went to have it custom drilled for me.When you are bowling for fun it really does not matter if you bowl good or not.

Bowling is an Olympic game but it may be a winter sport. At least I just checked online and it said that in 1988 it started as an Olympic sport. Do you have any game where you roll a ball at a group of targets, either inside or out? Do you have any other sport you can do singly or in small groups?

Hello my friend GardenGerty Ji, Well, As a young teen-ager some 60 yrs back I played KHO-KHO, but it does not mean that I should not know what is going on around us. No a days children do not come out after return from their school, they get stuck up to TV and many more electronic gadets. I di not notice this game in recently concluded games in London, so I vomited on taht issue. I apolize you, if hurt. May God bless You and have a great time [em]thumbup[/e

We have what is called 9 pins but I have never played that game. As kids we used to play a game called 7 tiles: LOGORIO - 7 TILES The game is played by two teams. One team does the fielding and the other has to strike the 7 broken pieces of tiles that are piled one on top of the other in the centre of the court, by throwing a ball. If the player is successful in breaking the pile he and his team mates run away. Because the opponents can hit any one of them with the ball, in which case the team changes sides. In the meantime one or more of the striking team try to remake the pile at the same time they try to avoid the opponents hitting them with the ball. Once all the 7 titles are piled, they shout "logori" and the game is over. When the tiles are struck if any opponent player successfully takes catch of the ball the striker is out.

You do not have to be really good to have fun, especially if you go with the right people. I get to do that. I would not like to be around people who criticized my performance, I am more, like you say, relaxing and enjoying myself.

In Canada we also have five pin bowling with smaller balls, no holes, and only five pins. I think they have duck pin bowling in the little bowling alley in the basement of our favourite hotel in Kitchener, where they also have mini-golf. I love bowling, epsecially when I'm annoyed with someone, and need to get my agressions out. haha Some days I just want to pick up something and throw it!

Oh, I was just mentioning five pin bowling to someone else. How do they set up the pins. I know ten pin is a triangle and nine pin is a diamond. I can see duck pin being really good for a smaller space.

I have gone bowling exactly once in my life. I was not very good at it; however, I would be willing to give it another go if I had a suitable reason to do so--for either networking or charitable purposes. However, better networking likely can be done on the golf course or at one of the area wineries rather than at the local bowling alley. Unfortunately, golf is an expensive hobby, and my boyfriend isn't into it so that would be hard for me to justify that sort of expense. Tennis is more affordable, but I think that the nice summer days are quickly coming to an end--and, with them, the chance to go check out the local tennis courts.

When I went to Japan, there were several places to bowl. Karaoke was also very popular. I have bowled a few times throughout the years, but not enough to be very good at it. I have always had fun when I went though. I may have to do it again soon. I treally is good exercise. I'll have to watch the slippery shoes though.

One of the most popular sports in Australia is lawn bowls. This is particularly popular with the older generations, but is becoming more popular with younger people also due to the skill levels involved in the game. You cannot go to too many towns throughout the country that do not have a bowls club. They also provide a great social meeting place for retirees who can grab a cheap meal and be entertained at a reasonable price. We also have lots of ten pin bowling alleys around, but they are not as plentiful as the lawn bowls clubs and are much more expensive. We go there for a game every now and then for a special occasion, but it costs about $60 just for an outing there as a family, so it is not a cheap option. It is fun though. If it was cheaper I would love to do it as a sport as I really enjoy it. I was quite good at it when I played more regularly, but these days it takes me quite a few games to get back into the swing of it and by then I have spent way too much money so I never get enough practice in!

I am not really good at it, but it is a fun way to do some good exercise. We have our own balls and shoes and that helps with the expense. Also we go at off-peak times. I do not think we have many outdoor or lawn bowling places, unless it may be in the Eastern part of the country.

Yeah, I guess it would be a lot cheaper here to go along with your own equipment. There used to be some older bowling alleys around that were quite cheap, but now most of them are owned by the big chains and very flashy and high priced. Our old local one got torn down to be replaced by a large discount hardware chain store.

In my country we have indoor ten-pin bowling and lawn bowling. Indoor ten-pin bowling however, is more popular. It is in most big shopping malls. I played ten-pin bowling when I was young but not any more now. I wasn't good at bowling. My average is between 130 to 150. It is quite additive, especially for newcomers who manage to knock down all the ten pins, that is called a 'strike' with a first throw. Or manage to convert the spares with the second throw. Wow! It is additive!

You seem to have a good time.I have gone bowling two or three times altogether, even though there are a few bowling alleys where I live in.I think it is too expensive for one who lives on his pension to frequently roll it.I haven't heard of candle pins and duckpins. The pins I have seen are shaped like bottles.

Some bowling alleys here offer special rates if you have your own shoes and balls or if you come at times when they do not usually have much business. I would not be able to afford it all of the time, though. Duck pins are just small versions of the regular bottle or club shaped ten pins. Candle pins are very nearly straight up and down like a taper candle.

The bowling alleys seem to have a head for running it.Candle pins are like a taper candle ,I think It is hard to knock them down.I wonder if the alley is as long as the regular one.
