For starters, I have nothing against VVS Lakshman. He is a very stylish player. He was instrumental in India's victory in a couple of matches. Now that credits due to him have been betowed, here is what I wanted to know from you all.. a. Do you think his recent performances warranted he be retained in the team? b. Do you think his one day performances over all in his career are really of the desired class when compared to what is the present state in the international cricket? c. Dont you think it takes new players a few games with international players to realize what is expected from them, and leave domestic cricket behind? d. If we let senior players cling to their positions well past their prime, aren't we reducing the chances younger player gets to show his mettle? e. Do you think it is wrong for a person to be reserved? f. Do you know that Dhoni invited very few people to his wedding, which is a personal event that does not have any component in it? g. Do you think VVS was sporting when he said he was not able to communicate his decision to Dhoni? h. Do you think VVS was sporting when didnt invite Dhoni, his cricket captain, for the party that he hosted signifying end of his cricketing career? i. And this one is the most difficult one to answer..because it requires a great deal of honesty IF THE CRICKET CAPTAIN IS CHUMMY WITH HIS PLAYERS, WOULDNT IT BE DIFFICULT DECISION FOR HIM TO REFUSE A BATSMAN WHO IS NOT UP TO MARK? Your call..

First things first. Al last you have emerged from the shadows to show us your nice face. Good. a. The selectors have made the decision by selecting him and we believed that he was being chosen on merit but it is believed that someone said something about this selection being conditional to VVS announcing his retirement after this series. Now that is being unprofessional. The selectors have a job to do and that is to select the best team but unfortunately, in India there is politics in every sphere of life and people hand out favors and expect to be compensated when it is their turn, the cause be damned. Emotions dominate important decisions and that is why results go awry. Srikant was a brave cricketer but as a selector he did not display the courage and his famous frankness. He showed that he can be timid too. b.VVS was not able to meet the one -day requirements and he did not shine enough to warrant a regular place in the side, his poor running between the wickets and suspect fitness levels did nothing to help his one-day cause. c. Oh yes, new players need to be exposed to international cricket when they show case their skills and are selected for their performance. In fact India is probably the only nation that had so many debutants who came in when they were in their teens like Sachin, Irfan, Bhajji,Saurav,Ravi Shastri, Gundappa Vishvanath, Maninder, Mohinder,Amre.. the list is very long but now you see that teenagers are finding it difficult to get in that quickly. Their debuts are delayed. One example is Ashwin's delay mainly because Bhajji with the help of senior pros delayed his debut to ensure that he could play a little longer. This cricket team is like a corporate team. They look after themselves and there is groupism and powerful lobbies. India Cements, Reliance and Shah Rukh Khan are powerful corporate entities and if Mukes Ambani can influence the Indian politics and popular govt. what is a mere Indian cricket team? What about the poerful politicians who are in the fray? VVS, obviously not favored by his home state or the powerful Deccan Chronicle lobby. d. If the senior players belong to a particular political or corporate lobby it is not easy to displace them. Sachin is an MP and Mukesh Ambani is behind him not to speak of the Indian fans and ex cricketers like Shastri and Gavaskar. But not to worry as MSD is building up his own corporate connections and has been making anti senior noises which are adding to the discomfort of senior players. Dravid and VVS are gentlemen and opted out but it will take a major effort to prise out the likes of Sachin, Sehwag Yuvraj and MSD himself. The younger lot will find it tougher and tougher to break in..when was the last time you saw a teenager making his debut? e. In the scheme of things today it is a crime to be reserved and shy. You have to sell yourself. Be shameless like sourav and sehwag and Bhajji. f,g,h. Very personal parties so no comments The selectors have a tough job and they do not have the power to take on the team management and dominate the final 11 selection. The captain has a tough job too because if he does not win matches he is gong to be thrown out but the aged seniors can still carry on and extend their careers. Sachin refised captaincy because he is a professional and wanted to have a long tenure without the pressures of leadership and censure. Dravid followed suit and had a long career too but when MSD took over he not only won matches for India, he also took charge of the team. He is a successful captain and not necessarily popular with the senior players but that is alright. He has shown that he is a leader and a true professional. He has his flaws but that is OK, he has been firm and assertive if you look at the way he eased out Sreesanth, Bhajji and put Sehwag and Gambhir in their place.

Hi Bhaiyya, how are u doing? And "nice face" coming from you..lol a to e completely agree with you f to h, I do feel though personal issues, celebrities cannot afford to have much of it. Media plays havoc with their psyche and out of nowhere disputes will emerge, and divide the team into two. Dhoni's marriage is a non-cricket decision, so I am ok with whom he wants to invite, whom he doesnt. More so because he cant be nice to people one day and axe them the next day. He would feel he betrayed a friend. However, Lakshman's decision not to invite Dhoni was petty coming from an adult..and a sportsman who had his fair share of innings to earn monies and fame from. Even if Dhoni was instrumental in axing him, as a sports person, he should have gracefully called Dhoni over. Dhoni was only doing his job for the country. In fact, Lakshman should have hung his boots earlier without such controversies, and not spoilt his record by trying to cling on when he was not in form. Many illustrious players have done that, so why not Lakshman? Brett Lee certainly looked good for another two years. I agree with you, MSD has a different way when compared to Ganguly. Ganguly tended to be populistic. MSD wants results. I will back him all the way.

Hello my friend vandana7 Ji, Well, as a strong cricket lover and knowing only about media, If I would have been VVS, I would not have left International Cricket fields, what goes on behind the scene, many time Sachin had fallen sick, Shehwag has been sick, it is first person concerned to decide about himself. A person knows much more about himself than anyone else. May God bless You and have a great time

There are two ways of going out, one is quitting the scene in hay days, and being remembered for lifetime as great players. Gundappa Vishwanath, and Srikanth and Farooq Engineer..off hand I can recall these three, though there are many more. The other is hang on there, ruin the averages, and be politely asked to leave the team. It is sad if a person hangs on like this. It is like Vyjanthimala Bali or Devika Rani's make up. They look ugly with the make up, right?

vishy was the best but even he was sorted out by the Pakistan pacers Imran and Co and their illegal reverse swing. After 1979 Vishy was a shadow of his former self and could not fight his way back into the team. But between 70 an 79 he was the best Indian batsman along with Sunny.

Yes..if it were not for the illegal reverse swing and tampering with ball, Vishwanath would have had better scoring averages. But even now, his statistics are impressive.

Hi vandana, I could not understand whether you praised V V S Laksman or criticized him. VVS retirement means end of an era of Indian Cricket. His mates Sourav, Anil, Rahul already got retirement from cricket. All three are great crickters. They saved and brought victory for their team in many occasions. The contribution of Laksman in Indian cricket will be remembered for long time. Laksman was a specialist batsman. He was superb in Test Cricket. It is true that his record in 50 over matches not so good. However he will remain as inspiration for the present and future Indian Cricketers. I can't guess why Dhoni was not invited in Laksman's party. I think the questions you raised are out of CRICKET.

Yes you are right vandana. I can understand your points. But forgive VVS considering his past contribution.

Hi Vandana from the little information I have (I am neither a cricket freak nor a follower of Indian Sports specially Cricket - Yes, I loved Dravid and his style of play) - Laxman should have left the game in style like Dravid a few months back - I think it was the test series against Srilanka when he wasnt selected or even before that should have been the right time. For the oldies giving way to the new fresher talents - aw, c'mon, we are Indians - and we grow up seeing aged people leading in Politics, Ministries and even many other places! So that shouldnt count I guess. Dhoni not being informed or even not being invited - well, we all know Dhoni might be a lucky guy as a captain, there are differences of opinions between him and many players - specially oldies. About Laxman not being a sportive person... well almost none on the planet is any more sportive as what the term actually means - the recent Olympics and the few Chinese players are good examples, even the Indian Organization which tried its best to change the decision of the judges... was that sportive? TOdays sports are played to win not to flaunt sportiveness... if a player(or team) loses, it is mostly a humiliating loss - wonder how can that be as in any sport one wins and the other loses! Bosses should NEVER be chummy with their subordinates - this is a rule of Management - if you falter at this rule, you will never be a successful Manager as you will never be able to take the right decision.

I find myself agreeing to all your reasoning except the "For the oldies giving way to the new fresher talents..." While what you say is true, I do feel sports is one arena where age is material. Younger people, if harnessed earlier are likely to give better results, ultimately it is the country's team that counts. Not oldies and youngsters, or friends and foes. If oldies have a grouse, they also need to face facts that Lakshman's performance had deteriorated considerably, and that it was Dravid who had declared the match when Tendulkar was in 90's. So the tussel exists between them as well. At the best, we could have cricket teams for different age groups. That way, we could also organize seniors versus juniors matches, and when the team had to be sent out to play with outsiders, we could pick the cream from both teams. No anguish, no politics, right? I loved the last point you make Bosses should NEVER be chummy with their subordinates. Exactly my feelings.

Oh I do recall that match. I admit i am not that cricket crazy! but leaving cricket aside (I know it is the unofficial Indian Sport today), when I see sports-people from different countries in the teens or even early 20s and compare those stats with our Indian contingents, I do see that most of Indians are much older. I do agree that sports is more about the youth and vigor which seems to diminish with age. But dont you think this is one important factor (I know that many other sports and sportspersons in India dont even get enough support from most of us, so I dont get into this aspect) when India fails to win golds at any major world championships? Okay we do win most when it comes to Commonwealth or some even at Asian Games. Somewhere I did read some books on management (though I am still at my best when it comes to managing time and finance)

for sure ,everyone will be ought to make their minds and by chance or without it,our mind goes in front so we can actively chat with friends and have our say.its quite important all the time.i also do it ,i feel a bit strange if people are reserved anywhere

People who are reserved often are not sure of their thoughts or are holding back their thoughts because it can create unpleasantness which may not be desirable at that point of time. Everybody has rights to their lives..having a dig at another person is strange..because it invites tirade in return.
