Tamil Nadu -- tiruppur is a famous hosiery centre known for quality fabrics they make and export. Price of coconut was going down that 3 coconuts were sold at Rs.10 (US $0.2). Suddenly a rumour spread that a new born baby was having teeth and it talked that 1500 more babies also will die and to prevent that they should break a coconut in three corner street after praying to God. The rumour spread now through different means -- SMS, phone messages, TV channels etc. and people started breaking coconuts praying for their child's health. Coconuts were not available in Tiruppur and neighbouring districts and the price of coconut shot up to Rs.20 per piece (US $ 0.4 per piece as against US $ 0.2 for three pieces). The spread of rumours like this spoil the confidence of people and should be prevented. Have you heard of any such rumours earlier and the reaction of people in such a situation. Also if you are hearing such rumours will you give importance to them. I may disregard such rumours.

The people who grow and sell coconuts were probably very happy because there sales sky rocketed. Sounds like they were all worried from a superstition. I believe the rate is 1 in every 1000 babies will be born with a tooth. It is thought my sister was born with onr.

No I have never heard of this superstition about coconuts or babies being born with teeth before. Your discussion was definitly something new I learned. I've never eaten a real coconut but I wouldnt want to waste it by throwing it in the street. I hope everyone is able to throw the coconut if it makes them feel better.

rumours always tend to be multiplying all the time and it keeps ballooning in most area's.but the incident which you have said is quite alarming and i suspect, the coconut sellers would have gone to the extent of doing the rumour so that they can sell more. Its all their marketing trick.

hello sir, I didn't hear the news, but that's very common in our country, as we see breaking a coconut and praying God is not harmful at all, so no worries, they cash the innocence of people, which should be stopped. Anyways at least the coconut sales people will be benefited with this, they can earn good and make money, which was not possible all these days. People in India (including me) no matter how much educated we are, but still will believe in one or the other superstition, in some or the other way. Sometimes when i fell ill, all of a sudden, my mother gets so worried, she feels some evil drishti or something has happened,so she takes some red-chillies and lemon and do some, turns around me, and through it, i don't believe in all this, but only smile at my mom, as i don't like to hurt her feelings and the concern towards me. So as long as we are not harming anyone with our superstitions it is okay, but should not go to extreme extent, like sacrificing blood and all, which i feel is too bad. Finally ,Its very difficult or i say impossible to erase all the superstitions, from Indian people , as all these are in our blood.

I did not heared this kind of rumor through newspapers. Thank you for sharing the news. These kinds of things definitely will lose the self confidence of a person. People should think before they act.

Coconuts are so cheap now on your place. Anyway rumors about something can indeed affect business. So that government must act to stop the rumors and fears of the people. I know coconuts are very important ingredients in our food for most tropical countries.

Yes. this is another way of looking at it. True people who have very young kids are prone to be psychologically affected by such rumours. good day.

That kind of rumor is something that I would never ever take seriously. I'm not a superstitious person and i believe God wouldn't do such a thing. However, hoarding is triggered by rumour of increase price hike here.
