hi mylotters,
I've been renting this space for a year now and of course I have to pay the electric bill monthly but today I asked my land lord to give me the electric bill to my surprised the envelope was already open. I ask him why it is open the land lady butt in and said I opened it cause I need to see how much electric bill you are going to pay for this month.
I am holding my temper as I respect her I asked her why you need too? I am going to pay it anyway she told me that some tenant did not pay the electric bills I can't accept this reason of her as I am not connected to the other tenants of them, for past year I never been late in paying the electric bill.
I just hate when people are opening something that doesn't belong to them as their tenant I still have the rights not to tell them my expenses or income as long as I am paying my rentals.
Gawdddd why I am with this kind of people.
hope everyone has a great weekend
happy mylotting

That is very wrong of her to even touch your mail. I would be furious. You are right on all counts - you are not connected to other tenants, and she had no right to open your mail. How did she get the bill? Was it in her mailbox? If she took it from yours maybe you can put a lock on your box. Those kind of people are everywhere. Like cockroaches. You have a great weekend too!

Who's name is on the account? If it's hers, she has every right to open it. However...if it's YOUR name, then she broke the law. We are currently renting; we are responsible for all utilities but garbage pickup. The water bill comes to the landlord; he then makes a copy and leaves us a copy with a note to remind us to pay on X date. But the water bill is in HIS name, not ours. And that's fine.
Does she have any reason to suspect that you're not going to pay the bill? If she doesn't, then she was being paranoid. I'd speak to her calmly, and let her know that you have been paying the bill promptly each month. But if it's in your name, see if you can handle paying the bill online, and to not receive a monthly bill.
If you're really concerned for your privacy, then perhaps you should consider moving into your own home, or find a new landlord.

I understand that you are renting the space; however, the issue has to do with whose name is on the bill. If it's not yours, then they (landlord) have every right to open it; but if it's in your name, they are violating your privacy. Hopefully by your letting them know that you don't like it, it will solve the problem. Without knowing whose name is actually on the bill, I am unable to offer any further suggestions.

It is given that the bill was under their name but since I am the one who pay it from the start and we already had agreement about it they don't have the rights to open it

Bhaby, i ever came across a few of my letters being opened by someone when i was still living in my former area. It really makes me angry to see there are such a person who are so busy to see other people's letters. I ever informed to the maintenance officer regarding this matter but seems no solution at all. Last to last, my hubby decided to move away from that area. Now, i am happy that in my new area here, all my letters are safely received. So far, no one have open my letter yet.

It is unethical and out of respect if you open someone's letter or bill
Even mom did not do it to my letter

Hello
That's totally annoying. That's private thing!. That's your business not hers. I think it's better to discuss about that matter to your landlord because the one he did was totally unethical.
Hope you can solve this matter as soon as possible because I know this is really irritating.
Have a great day..^_^

Nosey people get on my nerves also! I love it when people you never talk to suddenly start becoming friendly with you when they want to nose into your business, I read right through this! Often nosey people have huge mouthes too and cannot be trusted, I never share information with them I leave them in suspense.

If you are paying for it then they don't need to be opening your mail. Your electric bill isn't going to be the exact same as another tenants electric bill, and so her opening it up like that was wrong. It couldn't even been a lie, just an excuse to be nosey.
If she wanted to know how much it was, she could have asked and you could have politely declined, this way your privacy was impacted.
Here in the USA, it's against the law and people can be fined and I think even go to jail for it.

I don't think we can really use "their" here but really blame it on the wife (the landlady) instead. Hopefully they won't do it again though as it's invasive.
Though you know you can "steam" open an envelope and seal it shut, they never know it's been opened....

When I have rented places (here, in the U.S.), the electric was in my name, and the bill came directly to me. It's too bad that isn't the arrangement you have at your rental.
Personally, I wouldn't have held my temper as well as you. I would have told her that it was none of her d**n business how much the bill was, since she wasn't footing the bill.

Hi there.
Your landlord is more than nosy; what she did is illegal. I am a landlord myself, and I certainly understand suspicions of tenants not paying after being screwed over by tenants before, but that doesn't give me or any other landlord the right to break the law or invade a tenant's privacy. There are legal ways of getting to the same conclusions, and opening someone else's mail isn't one of them.
If I were you, the next time you talk to your landlord mention that opening another person's mail is illegal, and that until you are late paying rent or don't pay at all, she has no reasonable suspicion to start acting out against you.
I personally had tenants that abandoned the property without paying rent in July. They left my property ransacked, and I have thousands in damages and repairs. I'm currently trying to find their current address, since there is no doubt I would win a case against them in court. They had mail coming to the house for a small while after abandoning it. Even though they were in the wrong in so many ways, that didn't give me reason to open their mail. No matter the circumstances, that is illegal, and I would make sure to let your landlord know that.

What she did is a crime. She can get herself in hot water should you press charges against your tenant for invading your privacy. Tell her that so that she won't do it again. Didn't you feel violated when they did that? Obviously, it was done out of malice. You have to teach them a lesson. Not even your own mother can do that.

hi bhabycatch oh I hate that too as its illegal here in the US if anyone catches a person opening mail that is not theres it can be reported to the post master general. How dare your landdady open your electirc bill? its none of her business at all. I do
not blame you for being angry, i would have been too. I had given my son permission to open my mail is I was in the hospital but the landlady as no right touching your personal mail.dont you have a mail box for each of t you there? that would stop the nosy landlady.

those
show how I feel about your nosy landlady.

Me too I have noisy people especially when they talk non sense and play music that is not really good to my ear. But we cant really do something with it as they are on their own properties. It's part of their freedom. So here in our neighborhood, Im already used to it.

Not fair and advisable also. Now you tell her that as long as you opened and convinced, 'you only pay the bill for your satisfaction', and let see what she is telling. First of all she is not supposed to open the letter, and instead of saying a sorry, she is just coming with excuses...
Or you say you are not gong to pay the bill for this month, and if you feel do it. But next month my have to pay the penalty + the next bill also. However maker her little furious and should not open the letter addressed to someone else.
Anyway, here we get the bill just like a notice and not as a closed letter or envelope.

Hi bhabycatch! You can tell them in a nice way that they are not supposed to do that thing. Well, they should be sensitive on how would you feel about it in the first place. They should not need to be told. Oh well, some people are just inconsiderate.
