Is your fat wallet causing you back pains?

I have a few cards in my wallet. There isn't too many bills in it, as I usually prefer to pay by debit, but it is still quite thick when it gets folded up. And I've noticed that I've not been sitting right as my wallet is just on one side of my bum.
I've been noticing some pain in my back.
Unfortunately, this is the only way I know how to carry a wallet.
So, anybody having the same back pains which is directly attributed to a fat wallet? As guys, have you moved on from the traditional way of carrying a wallet which is the back-right pocket?
What is in your wallet anyway?

I would believe that a fat wallet in your back pocket could cause back pains. Your spine/hip wouldn't be aligned properly. Though this might be different, I have mom friends with little ones who have back problems . . . they were told by their doctor it may be due to carrying their babies only on one side (most people do carry children only on one side!) - that would misalign the body too. Some were told they should carry on the other side - or switch off at least. I wonder if you keep that wallet on the same side all the time??
My hubby puts all he can in his shirt pocket. He requests that if I buy him shirts - he wants pockets. Otherwise, he I think he does put his wallet in his back pocket. And he likes to wear pants or shorts with those pockets on the side of the knees.
But hmmmmm, I never thought of that being the culprit of his back pains . . . I shall look into this!!

Add to that diaper bags, large purses, and baby carriers that we carry on one side mainly and you have a real situation. Back pain afflicts a huge portion of the people in the US. Then we do not do any exercises to remedy it either.

Oh yah bounce, I get those back pains sometimes now because we're trying to use the stroller less these days . . . but the little guy wants to be carried more often now - ahhhh!! He's a lot heavier than when he was a "baby" - so that doesn't help either. Wow, how long was that flight? Sweet, but painful at the same time!!

I see what you mean much, as I remember when my youngest son was young, I would carry him one way only. Although we had carriers and strollers, there were times when I had to carry him.
Once when we flew back to my hometown, I had to carry him in the plane seat the whole time. He would cry if I lay him down on my lap, so he had to sleep on my shoulder. I had the most terrible back pain after we landed.
I should look into exercises to remedy my back pain GG!
Thanks.

good day bounce58,
i am not really aware that putting wallet on the other side of the pocket can bring harm to one's health. until i noticed that most of my colleagues are getting their wallet from their pocket and put it on their table drawers while working. and since they will gonna sit for longer hours, so they will just place their wallet on their drawers. so maybe this is the very most reason why they are doing that. it is for that purpose.

The guy who sits closest to me at work does puts out his wallet and places it in a drawer in his desk. I think it's because of the same reasoning. I might just do the same. Except that I often stand up and walk around the production floor. And I know I'd feel uneasy if the wallet is not in my pocket.
Thanks.

I'm having back and shoulder pain caused by a heavy purse.. and I don't even know why it's heavy. Mostly there's just tons and tons of papers crammed into it. It's a fairly large purse so I carry my weekly and monthly work schedules, as well as other papers I'm handed through out my day.. like doctor's notes, prescriptions, receipts, etc. I don't have much change in there.. as that makes it far too heavy so I empty out the change frequently.
My husband has a problem with his wallet on long drives. If he knows he'll be driving for more than an hour he'll take his wallet out, otherwise he has trouble walking afterwards because that leg has fallen asleep.

I've actually started doing the same when I drive. I find that it is just easier for me, posture-wise, if I have my wallet out when I drive. It doesn't matter how long the drive is.
I know what you mean about the heavy purse. I have friends that have too much loose paper in their purses too.
Thanks!

hi bounce58!
its been awhile since i last used a wallet. i use a moneyclip for my cash, which i would prefer to have more of, and a card holder for my credit and debit cards.
back then, i always placed my wallet in the back right pocket. in the times that i wear a jacket, my wallet goes in the left-inside pocket. more of habit than anything else.
cheers and happy mylotting bounce58!!!

I know some guys that switch the pocket that they carry their wallet in, although admittedly it did take a little while for them to remember to check the other side of their pants before panicking that their wallet had been stolen.
Also, I know several guys that take their wallets out of their pocket when they are going to be sitting for an extended length of time, such as riding in a car, so that they do not get uncomfortable.

You could always do what some guys do and get a wallet with a chain attached to it that slides through your belt, so that your wallet is always attached to you ... unless someone takes off your belt, that is.
That way, even if you switch sides with your wallet, you do not have to panic for very long, because you can just follow the chain to the end and find your wallet.

Hahaha! This sounds just like me. I have a tendency to check my wallet on my back pocket when I'm up and about, every 5 seconds (immediately after I checked my phone in my front pocket).
So I'm sure there'd be moments when I'd panic and forget that I actually placed it on the other pocket.
Thanks PA!

That's the first time i ever heard that a wallet gave someone back pains.. That is just too sad.
I have not experienced that though, since my wallet is not that thick and i also lace it on one side of my bum.. Maybe you should go to the doctor for better help.

Yeah your right. It could be a shame if the doctor would know the reason for your aching back. But I guess it's more convenient to carry cards around instead of cash for our purchases. Also the possibility of recovering the cash stolen through pickpockets is nil, but if it's the card we can just inform the card provider that it was stolen so that they could cancel any transaction if the card is used.

Wow!! I have never heard this one. I would think it would be uncomfortable sometimes when you sit on the wallet but never heard of it causing back pain like this. I guess it could happen as you often hear of us women who's purses have been known to be the cause and source of backaches.

Hi Bounce
Reading your post gave me my first laugh for the day.
You defnitley should not be sitting on your wealth or placing your wealth in one spot. Your wealth should be spread around so minimum loss is experienced should be at the mercies of a pick pocket. Poor Bounce. If you do not like man bags then keep it in an inside jacket pocket or something. Take care and many blessings

Not being a man, I've never carried a wallet in my pocket, but I do know that if you do have a thick wallet in your back pocket that it really can have an adverse affect on your posture when you are sitting.
However, there are a lot of other variables that could be causing your back pain as well. One of the biggest culprits of back pain is that an individual doesn't use the proper postures and methods when they are lifting.

Yes, but I learned not to carry a wallet in my back pocket many years ago already. before, my wallet is bulging (not from money) but all sorts of papers - bills, cards, etc.etc. It often is the main cause of damage in my back pocket. And most of the time, it becomes irritable and causes swelling on my buttocks and sometimes creating swelling and back pains. But today, I never had it in my pocket and I learned to keep it in my pouch whenever I go.

You are so right about causing damage on back pockets!
This year, I've disposed off two favorite jeans because of holes in the back. This is significant because I rarely dispose good jeans.
So, apparently fat wallets not only cause back pains, but ruins good jeans too.
Thanks for the response.

I used to go to a chiropractor regularly and they told me that sitting with anything in your back pockets isn't good for you, even if it's your cell phone. When you sit on something in your back pocket, your spine is being thrown out of alignment. Your spine can cause a lot of pain in different areas if it's not in proper alignment and you can get back pains and problems from keeping things in your back pocket and sitting on it.

I have a bulged disc at the S1 location in my lower back. My chiropractor did talk with me about having a big fat wallet in my back pocket. It was not the cause of my problems but it was contributing to the problem. For a long time I carried my wallet in a fanny pack like cyclist might wear to carry small items. It's not a very good fashion statement though. Also at work they were banned from the production floor along with purses for security reasons. To be able to carry my identification and all with me at all times I bought the slimmest wallet I could find and I carry the absolute minimum in it I can. It does make a difference.

I used to have a boss who carried a fanny pack. All of us (staff) would joke about behind his back. It wasn't really a good fashion statement!
A slim wallet would be nice.
If only I didn't have this constant need of having to have a few club cards in my wallet.
Thanks koopharper.

While I do not think a fat wallet is linked to back pains, I cannot relate to this situation; for the most part, my wallet does not contain too many objects. I usually keep ID, some credit and debit cards, and some bills of cash. For me, my wallet is kept in my front pockets rather than my back pockets. Anyway, unless my wallet is around my back area or chest area weighing at maybe 20-30 pounds, I do not think wallets can create back pains.

Your fat wallet, or even a skinny one could be throwing your back out of alignment. My husband felt that his was and he now carries it in one of his front pockets. Of course you will have to know, he does not wear skin tight jeans, or it would not fit there. His wallet is full of business cards and receipts and some other kinds of paper. I am not even sure what because he is a pack rat, and we certainly do not have money, so it is not like he is sitting on a wad of cash.

Wouldn't that be something?!
If the reason my wallet was fat, was because of a wad of cash?! Unfortunately, I'm like your husband. I have a few things in my wallet that ought to be in the trash.
Once in a while I do remember to clean it up. Maybe once or twice in 10 years.
Thanks GG!

I'm female as I am sure you know, but no I've never had back pain because of that. Usually I have back pain because I only work twice a week now and my back isn't used to standing up for long hours anymore. My back usually hurts for an hour after coming home from work, but not for long.
A customer comes in really late at night and has a shoulder bag, it's "manly" and I'm sure easier to carry then a fat wallet.

Oh, I've seen those 'man-purses'!
And I've seen some guys carry them around. For some reason, I could never picture myself carrying one. I know that it is better than a 'fat wallet', but I think it would make me carry a lot more than bills and cards in the 'purse'. Then I'd be lugging around something heavy on my shoulder.
Thanks!

Thanks.
