An Example Of How Painting SHOULD Be Done

All My Own Work Apart From Spindles! - I hope you are suitably impressed with my paint job!

Earlier I mentioned the hideous undercoating paint job my MIL did on our vestibule door. Well, the other day I finally managed to finish off the top of the banister and post with the ball thingy on top (photo supplied) and I must say, I'm rather proud of my efforts! At least I've not botched it!

That looks very neat! You did a great job. I couldn't do that at all. All i know how to do is to decorate some decals on my wall by painting them with poster paint.

Thanks very much! To be honest, I had put this job off for some time as I was worried about it. However, the internet came to my rescue as I found instructions on how to paint the banister top (the main section I painted) and it works best if you dollop paint in the middle and spread it in each direction. This ensures even coverage, apparently. It worked a treat, I'm pleased to say!

Thank goodness for the internet. I always go to youtube for instructions on so many things. Just like the wall decals that i made, I got that from youtube too.

Good for you! I guess I could learn all about wallpapering if I wanted to but we don't have ladders (we have very high ceilings) but if the ceilings were a bit lower I'd be wallpapering for fun, after finding out what to do from the internet of course.

unfortunately painting is one of the things that the guy who sold me the house did right, it's more plumbing and cabinet work and electrical and so on that I need.

I think you will find yourself doing more and more of your own work. Doesn't it make you feel proud and competent. Since the door is only undercoating, you can do the finish part. I know, first you have to get the paint off the places it does not belong.

Yes, I'm on a bit of a roll with the painting now, especially when a 250ml pot of Johnstone's paint cost only £2.99. I should have a cupboard full of them at that price lol. You're right about the confidence thing though; the more I paint I am finding I'm becoming more competent at it plus the fact I don't have to get my FIL in to finish it off. An added incentive if ever there was one.

Good JOB! I used to paint stuff, but age and bad feet don't like to do it now.

It's very satisfying I must say. Before I had a go I always thought that gloss paint was difficult to work with but it isn't. Ordinarily (if I was a professional) I'd go for the stuff that can drip if you're not careful but I bought the non-drip gloss paint and I can honestly say, I've not made a mess, just painted where I needed to lol. If I lived near you I'd help you out with my newly-found painting skills. I must take after my Dad, he's a brilliant painter when he puts his mind to it. His aches and pains are so bad though, he has to actually lie down to paint skirting-boards now. Because he takes his time, obviously the pain kicks in at a certain point, making it a less pleasurable experience. He still finishes it though. Bless 'im!

Haha! Yes I should, shouldn't I. If I could live my life over again I'd definitely go on a painter and decorator course but the ladies they have on it are very young. I'd be laughed out of the place if I turned up with me brush lol.

Well done! It is by no means inferior to what a painter does.It goes to show that for something, you can do it if you put your mind to it.

Yes, I thought that myself. It was either that or get John to do it (he's always tired over weekends so I don't think it would be fair on him) or get my FIL round but he's in no hurry due to his wife falling out with me...so I had no alternative really. Chuffed I managed it though.

hi J aney it looks very professional so you did an excellent job.Perhaps the mil can learn some pointers from your work? ha ha. Perhaps you can get the undercoat job off and have it repainted on the vestibule door yourself.,some people are not good at diy stuff andI bet MIL is one of them.

I'll never forget the time she fumed, "We know what we're doing!" when I was insisting the painting should be done before the wallpapering, to which I replied, "Well, that's just it Margaret..you DON'T know what you're doing!" Oh dear, she's not been seen since after she stormed off lol. I think she could learn from me Hatley, the trouble is she's too stubborn to do so...and she's crap at painting after all these years so she's not gonna improve now. Haha!
