If I can't buy what I need, maybe I can make it.

I have a small craft project I want to do. It requires a fairly large bead with a hole large enough to string ribbon through. Only place in town to buy craft materials is Wal Mart. I bought a string of beads that are large enough, but when I cut it apart the holes were microscopic. It will be a few days until I can shop out of town, so I am trying to make some pretty beads. I have in the past made an air drying clay called cold porcelain. It is not really porcelain but it dries hard. I made some up today, then rolled beads of the right size. I put a tooth pick through the middle to make the holes. Wish me luck. I will probably post the results in a few days and maybe even a picture. Have you ever made cold porcelain, or even heard of it? Do you ever use fimo or sculpy?

I have never done nothing like this i wish you luck with this. I am not a very crafty person but when i find something I like and can do on my own I have a lot of fun doing it.I look forward to seeing pictures of your finished product when it is done.

Actually this is for that angel paper clip picture you posted on Gather. I have tons of ribbons and some clips already. I thought I had beads but it did not work, then I bought some and they did not work. I have heard that for some things there are good tutorials on You Tube for left handed people.

Thanks I am trying.I get a lot of good ideas on crafts to make but never try them. My problem is not having somebody to help teach me how to do things. i am left-handed and it is hard for me to learn to do a lot of things.

I do not even remember when I first heard of it, but there are all kinds of recipes for craft stuff online. It is a lot less expensive than what you have to buy.

That is a very creative thing to do, when you don't have the right craft supply. Glad you could figure out how to make it on your own. Can you colour the beads too? I would also be frustrated, if I bought something, and it turned out to be the wrong side.

I will just make something else out of them, like a bracelet on memory wire or something. You can put coloring agents in the cold porcelain, but I want something pearl like so I bought the nail enamel that will give me that effect. I will paint the beads.

I make things a lot that I need to use around the house. The best craft supply store that I also used to work out was AC Moore. One that is closer and has a lot of great supplies is Michaels. We can also get a limited amount of supplies at Target,Wal Mart or K Mart.

The closest Michaels is an hour away. I am more likely to go to Hobby Lobby. I am on a Michaels mailing list though. I love craft supplies, and I also love home improvement stores. It feels really good to make the things you need.

Hi GG, No, I've never heard of this and I am a crafter, shame on me. It sounds pretty interesting and I'll have to make some for myself and my little granddaughter, Lucy. I already looked it up. Could you have maybe tried to hammer very lightly, a nail in the hole of the bead you bought to try and enlarge it? What are you trying to make and please...take some pic's for us. We all want to see and that's the best part, lol! I've used clay before but nothing else. I made tiny little mice, dishes, worms and other odds and ends for my miniature scenes I use to do. My granddaughter and I just make some Halloween items with Play Dough...she made an adorable yellow and black ghost and a hot pink finger puppet with a face. I made 3 pumpkins, a little purple and green monster, and witch hat with a mouse on it, and an purple owl. Yeh boy, we are allll creative here, lol!

I always enjoyed playing with Playdoh when I worked at HeadStart. I have never purchased any air dry clay. I like the cold porcelain because it seems very pliable and elastic. I got that recipe online. I have a book somewhere with tons of craft recipes and that may be where I first heard of cold porcelain. I just wanted some beads for the paperclip angel. I had some clips and they are a simple craft that is fast. Hubby wanted me to do some stuff for a car and product show a little town nearby is having and these would be very fast and inexpensive. I will use the beads for another project, maybe some fancy ornaments or a bracelet for myself.

The clay I used wasn't air dry clay..you had to cook it in the oven for a few minutes and then let it cool. Then you could just paint it or do whatever you wanted to do with it. I am going to try the cold porcelain and from what I see in your comments, I think I have found the same recipe you're talking about. She even shows pic's and I like that. The paperclip angel sounds so cute. I hope you get to sell quite a few of them and I like your little saying too. Good luck and sell, sell, sell!!

To me, being creative generates kind of a peaceful feeling. I have not used a knitting machine although I do have some knitting looms. My son makes earrings and other jewelry. I have been to parties where we used the hostess' tools and made cards with kind of step by step instructions.

When I was young I got involved with lots of crafts, but now I don't seem to find the time. My most profitable craft was making jumpers using a knitting machine. It got me thinking about colours and designs. It needed a lot of patience at first as I kept dropping stitches. I really enjoyed it but it enabled me to knit so fast that I have not picked up knitting needles since. My daughter started making earrings, that was fun and soon I started making them too. I didn't sell many but it was a useful craft to learn because now I can always make earrings to match my clothes! Now I would like to make my own cards, but I do not have the skills yet to make a good job of it.

Erm, no. My hands are so crap thanks to Fibromyalgia I can't. But to beat the Walmart stranglehold and get more variety, try poking some on-line stores. Sense rents on store fronts went sky high Mom & Pop hit the Internet in spades.

I've done fimo clay. The trick for fimo/sculpy is lots of rolling. A pasta roller is nearly a necessity. When I was in college a friend's mom made roses out of bread clay... http://www.ehow.com/how_2132677_make-bread-clay.html can you post pictures of your finished project?

I will have to finish up some. I did find inexpensive plastic beads in a tub and made the angels that I wanted to make. The beads were just for their heads. I am going to make myself some stretch cord bracelets with the clay beads. I also experimented with a cut out leaf and it looks good. I always have to form a few roses just because. I never did bread clay. It really is the same or similar composition. Adding the white glue gives it the polymer ingredient, I think.

I like tools and making things of all kinds. One year "sander claus" visited me at Christmas. I need to organize my "stuff". I ended up getting plastic beads for the project but I have a wonderful tray full of "porcelain" beads to paint as well as some sculpted flowers.

This is like porcelain, it is an air dried clay. It uses white school glue, corn starch or corn flour, glycerine, and inexpensive cold cream and water. You cook it up on the stove. You can add things like white chalk to whiten it or other things to color the "clay" or you can leave it natural or you can paint on it. Then you use a spray sealer. Follow some of the links I left to get recipes.

Would love to see your work GG. Do post a picture when done. Beads are in fashion these days. I used to be crazy in the good old days. In fact I worked for a company that manufactured artificial pearls and beads. I used to deck myself with them - even used them as hair pieces, round my waist, etc When I was in the US, I visited my nephew who took me to a craft place where kids worked on porcelain objects. I too was given a piece to work on. I still have that with me.

I used to wear lots of beads and I have quite a few in my jewelry collection. I will see how these things turn out and put up pictures with discussions. I loved working with children at a preschool. Kids love art, and color and using their hands. You have had quite a variety of experiences.

When I am in a foreign country I like to have a taste of that place. I have taken bus rides, tram and train rides just to mingle with the people of that country not to talk of the sights that would describe a country in its entirety. I remember reading novels where the 42nd Broadway Street used to be mentioned so often. I had this dream to walk on that street and I did. I also watched a play but was disappointed with the experience.

I have not heard of cold porcelain. My wife has used fimo before but I find it a little expensive. I'm going to have to look into cold porcelain. I make candle holder, bowls and other turned items. I think some of these same items could be cast or formed and hand painted. It would be an interesting addition to the crafts I already make. I have considered plaster of paris but I have to find a way to make it strong enough without making the job too labor intensive. I wish you luck with your own projects.

Thanks, Koop. I think you and your wife would enjoy this cold porcelain. It is very durable, and can be worked up very delicately and costs next to nothing to make. Another home clay that seems to last forever is made with cornstarch and baking soda. It makes a hard white clay that looks a lot like plaster of Paris, but I think is stronger.

Good evening GardenGerty, I love buying art and craft supplies. I am always making something. I have not made that cold porcelain, that you are talking about. I have not heard of this either. I make different things and thats all I make. Its hard for me to follow directions on things that I need to make. I am very free lance. In everything really! Its actually kinda annoying how I cant follow directions. Thats why I have never slow-danced!!! LOL I can do like technical stuff. But it all has to be my own way of getting there. Did you make those beades on your own or did you follow directions?

I used instructions for the cold porcelain. I am just rolling round balls the size I want and putting a toothpick through them. I will make a larger hole if I need to. I do a lot of independent or free style things myself.

not heard of the cold porcelain but have used fimo for beads and this year, i am planning to use some fimo for little flat tags which i will attach to my Christmas cards and tags. i have a metal stamping set so i can stamp words like joy, peace, etc on them and will get some strong glue to affix them. i hope you will show us how the beads turn out.

I tried growing a garden but I lostost of my plants some cat got into my garden or some animal idk but anywho I do try I have also tried making jewelry but it seems I can't fallow the complicated rules and directions. Plus I'm soo very busy with work and raising toddlers and keeping my house from falling apart :D. I'm sure I'll give it another try at all those things when they r all grown...

Right now you are being a mom.I grew up in a very disorganized but artsy crafty family. Some of my earliest memories are of my mom and grandma doing various projects. My garden stunk this year, too hot to do anything with it. You will want to check into ways to repel stray cats. I stuck a little bit of crafting in here and there when my kids were little, and then I did child care. If you cannot follow the directions on jewelry, make up your own design. I am probably old enough to be your mom or even older than that so I have had time to learn and experiment with lots of things.
