My grandson Bishu will complete one year this October;
as per rituals his hair is to be shaved, this is called ‘Mundan ceremony’; so my son and his wife accompanied by my daughter (she is married and eldest in amongst my kids) will move to a temple in Puri on sea beach tomorrow.
This is usually done in any temple, some do in home too.
Barber will apply shave off the hair, apply sandal wood paste, some herbs; my daughter will collect the shaved hair, wrap in kneaded wheat flour and throw it in sea or pond or river; my son will give some gift to her.

Each Hindu ritual has some scientific reason behind.
I try to observe as much as possible.

If we don’t do it now it will be done when he is 4 years young.
Any such similar rituals you observe?
Please comment on this and share your views.
Thanks in advance.

Catholics are obliged to bring their newly born child to the church and let it have baptized to become a Catholic.The ritual is not too long as long as the head of the baby is partly wash by the priest with holy water,with some holy prayers in front of the church altar.That is all and the baby is already a baptized Roman Catholic.

hello professor,
it was not so long ago when you sent to me pictures of nini who have also passed the same ritual. how time flies. i just cant help but smile.
we dont have that kind of ritual.
but this is very informative to those who do not know about this ritual. in india, there is always something to be seen and watched, and admired.
have a nice day.

There is no religious ritual in my religion that goes with the cutting of an infants hair. However, it is a great milestone in our culture when a young child has their first haircut. Paul was just about one year old the first time that he had his hair cut and I did keep a lock of his baby curls when we had his hair cut for the first time. I couldn't imagine what it would be like to have not been able to keep that small piece of his childhood.

Interesting ritual, Professor! Is this ritual for both boys and girls when they turn one? I don't know about ritual, but I know several people of various cultures who have shaved the hair off their babies for the sake of making their hair grow in thicker and fuller. Many have told me to do that for my kids because they they didn't have a lot of hair - but I did not do that. Also I know a couple people (females) in their 40's who have shaved their hair off completely as part of detoxing for their general health.
