Retinitis pigmentosa- no effective remedy still now.

Recently a patient visited my chamber. He has been diagnosed as a case of retinitis pigmentosa which has no remedy even in modern day medicines. He has consulted a number of reputed ophthalmologists of the city but none of them could provide him with any ray of hope. Moreover, retinitis pigmentosa being a genetic disease, there is every possibility of transmission of the disease to the offspring. So he has been advised by all not to produce any baby in case he marries. He came to me if I could suggest any homeopathic medicine for remedy or at least for arresting the progress of the disease. But in spite of being a homeopath with a long experience of more than 25 years, I am not sure if there is any medicine in homeopathy which might be effective against it. So I too could not help except repeating the same advice of not to produce any baby under any circumstances. As it is a genetic disease, and there is no effective treatment for it, the only way to prevent spread of the disease is to block transmission of the responsible gene from one generation to the next. So if any mylotter has any of his friends or relative suffering from retinitis pigmentosa, he or she would be made aware of the probable consequences his or her baby might have to face in terms of vision as the baby might be a victim of the disease.

This is one reason I loved my biotechnology assignments. They give so much hope to hopeless cases. Anyway, I read recently that researchers have succeeded in making eyes from stem cells. Hope this is a good news for that person, and so that person too can have children.

All it depends on when it would be available for human use. Secondly, how much it would cost? And thirdly when the technology would be available in a developing country like India?

I must visit the site and request fellow mylotters to check it themselves for more information about the disease. It would help them too.
