They'll have to start calling the fire department soon

I was here online listening to the t.v. in the other room when it came up that a telephone company in my State will stop offering / allowing 911 calls. I didn't catch all of it but apparently people will have to start calling the fire department when an emergency occurs. I find that ridiculous, and a waste of time. People will be in danger and could possibly lose their lives by the time they get a hold of the fire deparment, someone gets sent out.
It's just one phone company though so I suppose if people in that area are using a different company it won't matter, but I imagine a lot of people will switch to a different company because of this.
Why would you take away that?

Wow, That is crazy. First off it is not like people know the fire departments number by heart. Even if you are really organized and put it somewhere near the phone when you can see it that is a lot of numbers to dial in an emergency. When you are in an emergency situation believe me it is hard to dial a phone. I once had to call 911 when a guy at my work had his hand amputated. I got so nervous I dialed 411, so can you imagine having to dial a whole set of numbers when your house is on fire, or having to try and find the number as your house is burning, or having to run to a neighbors to use their phone and having them have to find the phone number. You are right the house could totally burn down in all of that time. That phone company is stupid and not very responsible.

They are supposed to be providing a list of numbers in the area, but people aren't going to be able to find it whilst in a panic. I know they might intend to keep it on the table by the phone, so to speak, but in most cases you know you misplace it, move it whilst cleaning.
For those who have a cellphone they can just call from the cell, but many won't have a cellphone and they are the ones who need to be able to just call 911.

I always have it in my pocket when out, or in one of three places when home.
I sometims have it in a purse when out, but rarely carry a purse. Apparently it will just be temporary, but they didn't explain that until now.
