I think it is important for my spending to go to the local people. That is why I like to stay in a locally owned guest house. The ideal room is a triple with a double bed and a single bed or a room with three single beds. I like the room on the ground floor because it makes things easier with my disabled son's wheelchair.
It can be lovely to stay in an apartment if it has an elevator. Then I have the use of a kitchen which is ideal for self catering. They often have a sofa or comfortable arm chairs to sit on. They usually have a dining table so that is perfect for meal times. I like to have a fridge to keep our drinks and salad items cool.
In my younger days I liked staying in dorms in youth hostels and backpacker hostels. The price was low enough for me to afford it and I met other travelers very easily. The hostels had a kitchen for self catering. Sometimes there was only one bathroom so I had to wait for ages.
What are the benefits you can see of different types of accommodation?
Which is your favorite choice and why?

I have stayed in many different types of accomodation: Bed and breakfast, campsites, hostels, cheap hotels, expensive hotels etc. In the past I often stayed in hostels and I think that there are advantages and disadvantages about that type of accomodation. It can be a little a annoying if there is only one bathroom in the entire hostel, because you spend a lot of time waiting in line. On the other hand there are two big advantages about hostels: The price and the chance to meet other travellers from around the world.
Today I stay in hostels or hotels. I like to stay in small locally owned hotels. There are two reasons why I prefer that. I like to support them instead of the big chain hotels and I think that they are more interesting and charming than the chain hotels.

It is great that you have stayed in many different types of accommodation on your travels. Like you I am keen on staying at small locally owned accommodation so the local people get the money and not a foreign country.
Having only one bathroom in a hostel can mean waiting too long for a chance to use it. I loved the price of staying in a bed in a dorm. International travelers are met in hostels and sometimes no travelers from that country are staying there.
I like bed and breakfast in my home country can be excellent. Then you get a bed in a comfortable room and one meal. I like to eat out for the rest of the day. I like self catering most of all.
Thanks for your superb response to my discussion.
