Are lefthanded people at a disadvantage in a right handed world?

It is estimated that around 10% of the population are lefthanded. As one of them I think we are disadvantaged in many ways. Tools are sometimes hazardous - even tin openers present a problem. Well meaning parents and teachers try to encourage right handed use of pencils and spoons in particular which subconsciously can have a disastrous effect on a small child. George VI of England developed a stutter which was attributed to constant pressure on him to use his right hand.
If you are a left handed twin please add that to your comments as it is thought that left handedness is prevalent in twins. It is also thought to be genetic, so are there many left handed people in your family?

I grew up in a time were right-handed was pretty much the norm. Although I had left-handed tendencies (I think my left hand/arm is still stronger than my right), I was moulded to be right handed. So being at a disadvantage was never a question. But I can't help it when once in a while my left-handedness comes out. I still shoot pool left-handed.
My two kids are both left-handed. And I don't try to force them to be right handed.

yes left handedness is a recessive gene that runs in some families. My aunt and her daughter are left handed. In school the daughter was not forced to use her right hand though it was the case years before.
Now even computer keyboards are made for left handed people. But as you say there is still much progress to be made.

There are no left-handed people in my family, either on my maternal or paternal side.

My daughter was born left handed. I would have just left her that way because I believe in uniqueness and do not like to follow the herd. But my mother was fearful and took it upon herself to teach her to be right handed. We have no other left handed people in the family.

I never had the opportunity to see if I was left handed. Had two serious injuries, one to my left hand one to the left arm. The majority of people are right handed and I can see that right handed tools would be serious issue. There are advantages too though. We had two left handed players on my highschool basketball team. They used that difference to great advantage. We also used it as a team. We played a double low post on offense. Reason was that our centre and I as players were complete opposites. He was left handed and I was right handed. Problems for other teams was that we were both the same height, same weight, same colour and style of hair, same colour eyes and we wore consecutive numbers on our uniforms. We made things even worse by switching back and forth all the time.

I am also a left handed person friend. But I don't think it is a disadvantage on my part. Yes, I also notice there are really some things that are made just for the right handed persons. I cannot use can opener, true, but the good thing, I've learned to open a can using a knife which is an advantage even within a group which is as of now we are living together as one group and we don't have enough things with us.
I can also do many hand skills which my friends cannot. So as for me I like it this way.

There are way more people lefthanded as just 10%, problem is most people are still forced to use their right hand! Might be/I guess it's genetic. Most people I know are left handed, we once checked it with parents at school. Out of a big group only 2 were orignally right handed, the rest was left handed, a big part of them was forced to write with their right hand incl. punishments. To be right handed is still seen as being a better person thanks to religion and politics. BTW there are also plenty of people using both hands I think this runs into the family as well. My son is lefthanded but is using a normal pen (no stabilo for left handed people), using scissors is hard, spoons, knives no problem, can opener is hard but he is able to learn since they (he is 9 years old) forced him at school to be right handed. My eldest daughter (28) writes with her right hand (forced) but is using a scissor etc with her left hand (hard for her as well. BTW there are plenty of tricks left handed people can use to make it all way easier (which I show my kids and even the teachers who still find it normal or better to be right handend since the world is right handed orientated). None of the people I know is a twin, the twins I know are all right handed. But left handed people do use the other side of their brains and do learn different as well.

Hi, my brother is left handed in my family but he has not faced much of problems. i have never seen him face any problems at all. Maybe some minor things which I am not aware of. some people might have problems because they are totally dependent on the left hand. My brother can do little with his right hand too so he is at not much loss. Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful day ahead.

First of all,I am a lefthanded people, and I feel lefthanded is at a disadvantage in a right handed world, people all use some weird eyes to see you and all of the tools are design for the right handed people, some when I was a kid my mother force me the change left handed to right handed, but it is very tough to me 'cause this is my nature, but at least,I can write in right hand.
Life is unfair, get used to it,I will take Bill Gates saying as my motto.

I have one relative that is left handed in a vast family of right handed. It was awkward to see one make do with a right oriented tool. Very few tools and facilities today are generically made (meaning, intended for both right handed and left handed).
But fortunately, those awkwardness that we say in left handed people proved a blessing to some. Take for example World Boxing Champion Manny Pacquiao. He is a lefty, awkward boxer but yet this awkwardness handed him world championships.
Truly, left handed people are also gifted people.
