I'm sure a lot of people have thought of having a yard/garage/tag sale to earn a little extra money. I have a friend that's been saying she's going to have one (all summer long) only to cancel on the day. She always asks me to help her with it. She decided to have one today, and I got up earlier than I would have liked so that I could have breakfast and check my email before going over.
Well, I just phoned her to make sure it was a go.
Guess what?
She cancelled. Apparently she didn't get much sleep last night.
Argh!
With friends like that, who needs enemies?

Whoa, sounds like you need to find another friend to help you and if this friend still complains later on, just say, "Oh, well I did have one you could have joined in on"

I wasn't having the sale. She was. Or wasn't, as it turned out.

Oh wow, so you were not selling anything? Want to move near me? I have a neighbor who I get together with to help each other out at garage sales only because we both have stuff to get rid of. I never seen where someone helps out just to help, I could use you because my neighbor isn't always available but she lets me know ahead of time.

Love it when I write a long response and then lose it. Not!
I hate yard sales because of the physical demands - setting up, getting up early, etc. There are other ways to sell stuff these days. I have sold things on our local Facebook buy/sell/trade page. I also heard of this site I've been meaning to check into called yardsellr.com. Of course you still have to deal with mailing and shipping charges. With the local Facebook page it only attracts people in your own area so they can come pick the stuff up.
I have been wanting, for financial reasons, to sell off all my books. Yes, even my favourites. But, I don't think people are buying books that much anymore. With ebooks being all the rage and cheaper than regular books people just aren't interested in buying new or even used books. But I may consider yardsellr.com for this. I've seen books posted on the Facebook page and it doesn't look like they are getting many bites.
It's unfortunate that you went out of your way to help a neighbour who cancelled. I wouldn't bother offering again. Your health is more important.

I didn't really go out of my way, just got up earlier than I wanted to.
She does sell stuff on Kijiji and in a couple consignment stores. I'll ask her if she knows about the FB page.

Having a yard sale is a lot of work and a person does need to make sure they get the proper sleep before hand. I would think though especially when you are offering to help her she would at least follow thru. Personally this is poor planning on her end and you might want to only offer to help next time after you make sure and get enough sleep as well if she ever really decides to ever have one.

Well you need to tell your friend not to ask you to help her with a garage sale anymore because she never has them

Your story reminds me of a woman who tried hard to get onto the tour guides course that I lecture on. She was blatantly unsuitable and we were pretty sure that she would not commit but we let her on because she had been so insistent that she would make a good guide. We turned others down because we had given her a place. The week before the course started she rang in cancelling because she thought that the hours on course days were too long and she might get tired! She need not try again next year cos she won't get on!

Well that was nice of her... to let you know a week in advance. Were you able to fill the spot with someone else?

That must be so frustrating. I know it would frustrate me.
I really can't be doing with friends that can't be bothered..which is why I don't have any lol.

It would surprise me if she actually went ahead with it.

I've taken so many grains of salt with each announcement of her yard sale, that I don't need to salt my food!

That's one way to deal with it, but it's not really my style.

No, I didn't have stuff to sell other than a few books, which I gave her last night.
