Are you sometimes nervous before a big event?

Our ability to cope successfully with life's challenges far outweighs our capacity to feel nervous. Yet in the weeks, days, and hours leading up to an event that we believe will test our limits, we can become anxious. While we may have previously regarded ourselves as equal to the trials that lie ahead, we reach a point when as they near, our nervousness begins to mount. We then become increasingly worked up, until the moment of truth arrives and we discover that our worry was all for nothing. We are almost always stronger and more capable than we believe ourselves to be. Do you agree?

All the time, especially if I have a participation in it. I don't know but I think it's the crowd plus the fear of failing in front of all these people is what really grate at my nerves. That plus the huge amount of caffeine that has run through my bloodstreams lol!

I just shake my hands and song to myself. This trick always works for me. Sometimes I just jump up and down. It takes all the jitters away and oh, make sure you go pee first in order to avoid accidents but that just happens when we were still kids except for really major events that will really freak you out.

I suffer terribly with my nerves and anxiety, so any big event is twice as unnerving for me to deal with. In the past I have tried to plan and rehearse what I am going to say and do, but on the day mostly it goes all in vain and things don't turn out how you have planned for them. I have sleepless nights, I worry constantly and because I am a negative person, will see all the negativity that the event will bring so I play out the worst possible scenario in my head. So I try to avoid any big events because of the stress and anxiety that goes with them.

Hi wolfie, I can totally understand and you should certainly avoid big events. I know lots of people who are relaxed in a crowd but would never be able to stand and speak before the same crowd. I've had a lot of problems myself as I mentioned in another discussion, and still do today, but I am getting better. Public speaking was something that I was able to do if I knew my subject, but was usually nervous before I got started. We all experience these things in different ways but like you I've needed medication to keep going. Today, I'm retired but still have difficult times. As I said, we are all different. Take care my friend get whatever help you can. We all deserve a happy life and I hope that things get better for you. Blessings.

Hi friend, some times we will get tensed and nervous while facing a big event or incident in our life, but we must avoid it. We must face all our life events with confidence, we must avoid this kind of nervous, it don't give any benefits to us

I agree that when we are awaiting something that is exciting and have a part in it, it causes waves of emotions. Then there is the moment of truth. You find that mind over matter is the attitude to see you through it. Nerves are calmed, and you are on your way to seeing the moment through. Then you look back, and what you see is how the experience gave you a better understanding of who you are.

I think so too Pose. I think that we often underestimate ourselves. We think that we can't or that something is impossible until we are actually put in the position where we have to somehow muster the strength. Once we get over the hump..we have something to be proud of. I have huge issues with presentations so just before I have to give one, I am a nervous wreck. As a matter of fact, I have a huge training session coming up that I am stressing over..lol. Wish me luck.

Dude
I agree with you fully, life is full of challenges, we have to face them boldly
Times are there when i feel defeated, but at the next moment i get up ready to face, come what may be, it is life after all, god has sent us for some purpose..

Hi, I am in fact always nervous if we're having an event. It doesn't really have to be a big one, I get nervous every time I have to go in front of so many. I worry myself too much about something that can possibly happen. But like you have said, it is of no use. Nothing happens and everything turned well.

Well, I believe that before a big event, such as before a change anything in our lives, after all it is normal to have a bit of concern and perhaps, in some cases, feel a little nervous.
I also agree on the second point of your question, where you say that then, when it is all over, we measure the state of anxiety that we had prior to this event, and often we realize that this concern was perhaps a bit excessive.

It is normal to feel nerve wrack in any situations. When I was in younger years, I admit that I am so quiet type person. Eventually, I overcame that kind of personality. I do agree, we need to be open for changes to be a better person.

hi Pose yes I believe I do. I fell a year ago and twisted my right knew badly thus having to have a lot of physical therapy . at first it really hurt to walk even e a little bit with the walker but my physical therapist kept telling me just see yourself down there by
the double doors.you can always do more than you think you can and so slowly one step after the other I did make it to the double doors then sat down in the wheelchair he had brought along with us.
each day I did more and in twenty days I was able to go home again.
I have used that motto for a lot of things since then and it does
work too.

I agree with you Pose.
Part of being human that we have fears and doubts with our capabilities. No matter how tough we are, if we are put in a situation that we need to prove ourselves to others, we have that fear of failure and rejection within us. We are too conscious of every action we might do, afraid they will throw negative comments on us. But then when the event is done, it is then we realize, we handled it far more than we have expected.
Besides, every challenge we accept is always manageable if we believe it is.

Hello Pose!
I do agree with you. Many times in the past when I had to do a presentation I would be nervous, writing and talking verbally until I thought I had every word perfectly phrased.
Then when the actual presentation would come about, I'd just start talking in a non-rehearsed manner and my words would just flow out.
Today I don't do any more oral presentation but find in my free lance writing almost the same thing occurs. On occasion I will take an assignment with a topic that I have absolutely no idea of and after some research and thought I will be able to write a payable article.
We all use only about 3 or 4 percent of our brain, but if we just sit back calmly and peacefully another percent or two just may open up!
