Ways in which to make a home more homely

It is three years now since moving to my new house. It is time to take a second look, and as I have looked around I realise that the walls are still quite bare. We have a couple of paintings, posters, personal photos but there is still a lot of wall space to cover. The question is what to hang on the walls now all the big jobs are done. Do oil or water paintings give it a more grounded feel than posters, which I think are rather modern looking and which I also like? On the other hand, if there are no personal photos around it looks like a hotel. Help me please.

I also like hanging a cork noticeboard, where I like to stick pictures or nice postcards I have receive from family or friends. I have also included pictures of the orchestra conductor, for example, as I thought she displayed a lot of feeling, as well as being an expert in her field! I have also included cards from meaningful anniversaries, as well as logos, fruit stamps, as well as pages from my colourful calendar, or anything that expresses my likes and the type of life I lead. I reckon anything with feeling would express homeliness!

I think it is a matter of choice. I don't have anything on my walls, in time maybe I will decorate. Oil paintings are beautiful, my boyfriend paints but do you think he would give me one of his paintings, not a chance! I also like a mirror on the wall as well.

Winter time is a nice time to come inside and redecorate or do some self awareness stuff I think. My daughter loves to put together puzzles in the Wintertime. The ones she really likes she will put puzzle glue on and hang them. My grandson does some great artwork and we hang them up too. And I even have hanging baskets with plants in them and some lighting on the walls too. Funny what we find when we really think about it. We have some big frames with small holes for pictures in them all the way up the stairs. And don't forget mirrors. Mirrors can do so much for a room. We have narrow hallways so I put up some mirrors to make them seem wider. You can get them in smaller groups or some nice big ones. I have even seen some with frames made from old jewelry that are very nice. When I am at yard sales I find things like mirrors and boxes and all manner of interesting possibilities. And, no, I don't buy everything!

What I have done is to frame my daughters art work over the years and I have put up one piece of hers for every year that she has been alive. So far I have 12 pictures or pieces of art up that she has done. For me its a great way to see how she has grown over the years and it adds a great conversation piece to the room. You could also do a collage of post cards from places you have visited. Its one of those things that people will talk about. Good luck I know that for me deciding what would look good on my walls was the hardest part of decorating for me.

For me turning a house into a home is something very personal. I like family pictures in my bedroom and study, but not in the living or dining room. But it´my choice. I don´t think that the lack of family pictures make my rooms look like a hotel. I have my plants, my couple of dolls, the ceramic plates I bought when traveling and some good paintings. In the livingroom I have a very nice persian rug over which there´s a table. And on the table I have my piggybanks where I save the money for traveling. THere are some odds and ends that I start to place where they should be but never get to do it. So, for me and for my friends, the house has a lived in look.

Well great to hear about your new house. Yes i can understand your desperation to make your new home more lively and beautiful to live in. as far as decorations are concerned, u can add some beautiful pictures of yours and your family pictures that will always remind of the bond u share with your closed ones. Besides, u can add pictures or wall hangings of some great people who inspire u a lot in your life. Also u can add some creative craft works like pots, wall hangings of different designs so as to fill up the empty space. What say?
