Husband ran out of gas tonight on the way home from work...

Tonight, about an hour ago, my husband called me from his cell phone. He wanted to let me know that he ran out of gas. He is about 1/2 block from a gas station and walked there to get some gas. The man at the gas station wouldn't let him get some gas in his gas can. So, thank God we are members of AAA. My husband called them to have someone come out and give him some gas. So, after 1 1/2 hours of waiting for AAA they finally showed up and gave him 2 gallons of gas. He just called me to let me know he is filling up and then starting again on his trip back home from work. It's 7:00pm now so he will probably be getting home about 7:45pm tonight. I don't know why he does this, but he always runs his tank until it's empty. I hope he learned his lesson. Have a great day and happy myLotting!!!

I can't believe the gas station wouldn't allow him to fill up his gas container. I believe this will teach him not to wait till he is on the "E" to get gas. All vehiches have an emergency supply but it can only take you so far. When our tank reaches 1/4 of gas left he is looking for a gas station. He says when you let it go to the bottom it picks up all that junk from the bottom which is not good for the car.

I think that employee at the gas station was just being greedy to be honest with you. He wanted him to buy his gas can priced at $29.99! It's amazing how some people just want to take advantage of others in desperate situations. Well, when he did get to the gas station he went to the one right across the street from this guy and said he will never patronize that station now. Thanks for your comment and have a great day!!!

OMG 29.99 for a gas can. That is outragous. I wouldn't have brought it either. Why are people so mean to each other especially in desperate times. Shameful!

Ohhhhhh, I did that once! Luckily the car stopped right in front of a gas station! The problem was little ol' me couldn't get the car up the driveway into the station - so some nice guys stopped and just pushed it for me (boy, they made it seem so effortless!). I did have AAA just in case, but I didn't need to call them for that particular situation (but thank goodness for AAA when we DO need them). I know I was a culprit of letting it go beyond empty on the meter . . . eek. But these days since I have kids in the car - I am a whole lot more careful about not letting it go so empty. Glad your hubby will be coming home soon and safely!

Thanks, he made it home safely. This isn't the first time this has happened to him either so I don't know if he learned a lesson or not. It's happened when I was in the car with him twice now. It really irritates me. It's never happened when our kids are with us but I don't want it to happen to me again when he's driving, that's for sure. Thanks for your comment and have a great day!!!

Oh wow. I hope he learned his lesson too. I have to admit I am really bad about doing the same thing. My car however lets you know when you get down to being able to drive 30 more miles on whatever gas is in the tank (which is about a gallon) and its so annoying that you really don't want to let it get down that low lol The bad thing is that my gas light comes on when I have ~70 miles to drive. Since I might drive that in a week I will delay filling up. We have the coverage through Subaru, they offer the same thing AAA does.

I never knew Subaru offered that type of coverage. On our car that he's driving right now it does not even have a fuel light on it so you have to gauge it by reading the fuel indicator arrow. Thanks for your comment and have a great day!!!

You might want to remind him that it's not good to let the gas tank run down too much as all the crap on the bottom of the tank can clog up your engine! LOL....you would think he would keep on top of it. My brother is a super intelligent man..designed part of the space shuttle....he does this all the time as he gets sidetracked too easily by other things!

I never knew about stuff getting into your engine if the gas went too low. My concern is always the lack of fuel itself. And you're probably right - men often get sidetracked. My husband is busy all day long at work and when he comes home I think he is just so mentally tired that sometimes he doesn't think about things like getting gas. Thanks for your comment and have a great day!!!

I guess he doesn't know that letting your tank get below 1/4 can damage the engine. If he is doing that for economy's sake he's certainly not saving anything but is in for a rude surprise and a lot of expense in the future. He should always stay topped up, if only not to be surprised by $5 a gallon gas. What if there was no gas? Would he rather have more than half a tank to get wherever you guys go in an emergency or would he rather have an empty tank and no choices? I do not understand people who voluntarily allow their resources to dry up.

You have a few good points there. I don't know about damaging the engine though by getting the tank below 1/4 tank though. He has always done that and this car is an old car. It's never had engine damage yet. Thanks for your comment and have a great day!!!

Oh my, that's the scariest thing that I don't want to encounter. I have experienced tire blasts, but never run out of gas. It will cause damaged to car engine if happen constantly (and I don't want it to happen- too much hassle and cost) Hope your husband will learn his lesson this time.

Thank you. I hope so too. I don't like car trouble either. What gets me is something that can be avoided like this. Oh well... Thanks for your comment and have a great day!!!

I hope your husband will be much more careful next time because it is a nightmare to drive and find that there is no gas at all. I wonder is it possible for him to borrow some gas on the way? My colleague told me a story about her sister. At that time she drove a motorcycle but there was not gas. Then she even borrowed the gas from the traffic policeman I can only say that she is brave

Yes, I agree it's a nightmare to run out of gas. And thank goodness we have roadside assistance, AAA. They provided him with 2 gallons of gas so he could make it to the gas station. He got home late, but safe. Thanks for your comment and have a great day!!!

Looks like I may be the first man to respond to this discussion. I'm not sure about your husband, ma'm, but speaking for the male species in general, not harsh enough punishment for memory recall. Plain English, he won't learn. I do for a while, then I push it as far as it goes. Don't want to take the time at the pump. And have you seen those prices lately, ouch. Although I do hate a long commute on my way home from work. I've been going to give my children a membership to AAA for Christmas every year, but haven't yet. Maybe this year. If they're anything like their dad, and they are, I'm sure it will come in handy. Let your hubby know he's not alone. :)

Thanks for that. No, I don't think he will learn at all. I am pretty sure he was just tired after a long day and wanted to make it to the station closest to home that had the cheapest gas prices. But in the long run I would have paid the extra .50 cents or so and just gotten the freakin gas. Thanks for your comment and have a great day!!!

Wow that's gotta be embarassing. But I am a member of AAA as well and I have never had to use it yet. Hopefully he did learn his lesson after today, I will never let my gas tank get that low. When it's at the line above E I will fill it because you never know if you may end up stranded or not and need heat to keep you warm.

I always tell him not to let it get that low but he just doesn't listen. He got home around 8:20pm instead of around 5:45pm! I'm just glad I wasn't with him! Thanks for your comment and have a great day!!!

Usually it takes something like this to learn a lesson. I always keep my tank at, at least a half a tank, if it gets under half a tank and I go and get gas, that way I never run out. I have not run out since I was back and college and that was a disaster so I am very careful about it ever since then and that was over 20 years ago. My husband did run out of gas about a year ago, he was using his friends car because his car was having problems and his friend had a company car and wasn't using his car so he let me husband use it which was nice, but my husband was not familiar with the gas gage and he ran out of gas. He called me and I had to go and borrow a gas can from the neighbor and then go put gas in it and bring it to my husband. Thank goodness for cell phones and GPS. My husband was out on a country road no where near a gas station. If he didn't have a cell phone on his he would have been in big trouble, and if I didn't have a GPS (one of the best Christmas presents ever) I might not have found him as easily as I did.

I never let the gas go under 1/4 tank when I'm driving just for that reason. I have never run out of gas myself. It just really irritates me that he does this. There is no reason to let it go that low. Thanks for your comment and have a great day!!!

I hope that he learns his lesson too, next time he may not be so lucky and thankfully you guys have AAA, otherwise, who knows what he would have to have done to get home unless yall had another car and you could pick him up. My husband's friend does this all the time, he drives his car until there is no more gas and he would always call my husband to come pick him up to get him gas, because he too knew that my husband had a gas tank. Eventually my husband got tired of picking him up and he no longer does it. I hope that guy learned his lesson as well, that there won't always be people available to come pick him up and bring him so gas.

Wow! We had a friend that was like your husband's friend too. She would always come over looking for a hand out, free dinner, etc., like every night of the week. There was a lot more to it than that but she basically wore out her welcome. And, no, actually the car he was driving tonight is our backup car. Our main car is broken down at the moment. So since we are down to only 1 car at this moment I couldn't go pick him up. And he was around 35 miles away from home. I really do hope he learned some sort of lesson but I really don't think he did. Thanks for your comment and have a great day!!!

I know all about this my husband has ran out of gas before it was late at night after he got out of work he called me and then he called his mom & dad to come pick him up so he could get gas in the car so he could get home. I also hope he learned his lesson.

It's funny because from what I'm hearing it sounds like it is mostly men that run out of gas and not women. It's probably because we tend to plan ahead more than they do or maybe not take as many risks or chances. Thanks for your comment and have a great day!!!

I am pretty sure this will teach him. If it wasn't the 1/2 block of walking and the rejection of filling up the gas can I am sure the additional 75minutes of waiting helped. Then there is the fact that when you are on the side of the road you get those looks from people passing by and occasionally annoying honks. If he does it again then he is just stubborn.

And it turns out he was in a really crappy neighborhood when this happened too, with bars on every window and pawn shops, liquor stores, etc. all around. I'm glad he got out of there just as it turned dark. Geesh... Thanks for your comment and have a great day!!!
