The doctor tells me to make sure I have two oranges a day and I'll not visit him as frequent as I do nowadays. But I have always been made to believe that it is the apple that I need more. Any diverse views here or an insight on the issue?

When the saying "An apple a day keeps the doctor away" was invented (in England), apples were the commonest fresh fruit available. Nearly every small garden had an apple tree and apples were sold everywhere nearly all the year round (it is one fruit which stores very well and can be had throughout the winter). Times have changed and oranges seem to be more common than apples. They also contain more vitamin C than apples (especially stored apples), so it probably makes sense for your doctor to recommend them. Times have, indeed, changed. It is now the season when English apples should be abundant in the shops, yet I went to buy apples yesterday and all I could find came from New Zealand, where is is now SPRING and completely the wrong season for apples!

I don't know what kind of medical issues you suffer from, but I think that one of the reasons that oranges are seen to be so good is because of the levels of vitamin C that they contain. Although there is nothing wrong with apples at all, and they are certainly good for you, you can't get the same levels of this vitamin from them. It is well known that Vitamin C helps to boost your immune system so that would help you if you were always at the doctors. You don't have to have oranges instead of apples, but build a few more of them into your diet each week or start to drink fresh orange juice.

One of the other benefits of apples is the fibre. They contain a very good quantity of dietary fibre which, as we all know, "keeps you regular". Oranges, and especially orange juice, don't contain as much fibre so, in that respect, are not as good as an apple.

I really think it depends on where you live, as oranges are grown here, so they are lower in cost. Doctors want us to eat more fruits and vegetables and suggest ones people can afford. My doctor knows I won't buy high priced produce no matter how good it is for my body. Most of us have to budget our money and buy what we can afford.

Well oranges has a lot of vitamin C strengthen your immune system thus preventing you to catch colds, flu and stuff like that. I think your doctor has some point but I think fruits in general not only oranges has lots of vitamins to keep you away from him (your doctor) so I suggest you shop for fruits high in vitamin c and potassium.

Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful day ahead
