A 38 year old man had a stand off with police this evening right out on the main street where I live. I had no idea this was going on although I heard sirens. He was wanted on a felony and the police had to use tear gas and a robot to get him out. No shots were fired, a part of the busy street was closed off for a while and he was later arrested. Do things go on right near and around you that you would never know about if you didn't listen to the news? Your thoughts please.

I wish we had news about what is going on around us. I hear syrens and we never hear what happened. I was almost run over by three police cars going to something and we didn't hear what it was about. Most of our news is about what is going on in Vermont. But we live in NY State. So go figure,.

You need to get a police scanner. lol Only way to find out. Not sure how you'd get one though. You're in NY but your news is about Vermont? That is weird.

Oh of course, we even missed a sidewalk sale because we didn't know it was going on on the corner from our house.

My daughter and grandson will tell me all about what is going on in the neighborhood in the way of Yard sales and such and neighbors. If they see it that is.

Most definitely! Though it's possible I would get a text on my phone from my son or daughter if they knew something was happening. And I suppose a call if it was dangerous in any way! We did have some sort of home hostage incident going on a few miles from here, between the town I live outside of and the next small town over.. but I never did even get all the details on that..

That is good that your son and daughter would phone you. We don't have any other family so that wouldn't be the case for me. I like to get all the details too cause I am curious and nosey. Yes, I admit it.

There's alot of things that go on in my town sometimes near where i live or further in town and I never hear about it until I either read it on the news or see it on TV. It's amazing the things you hear go on and be like where was I when this happened? It's scary some of the things you do hear, there's been alot of bar fights recently and stabbings at bars and just crazy things like that. People get way to carried away on things. NO where is safe anymore.

I live that way too. Ablivious is best sometimes. I don't really care to go out with the weird people we have around here. I do set outside sometimes but not often. My social anxiety doesn't allow me to go out very often. You take care too!

It's very quiet in my neighborhood for the most part. I think I've seen the police on this street once in the four years I have lived here. And that was for a family dispute. I live in a semi-suburban, semi-rural area and most of the residents are of retirement age or just below it. I don't watch television much and sometimes go for days without seeing the news. But I have a neighbor who keeps two police scanners on all of the time and she lets me know when there is 'breaking news' (in the entire town, no less). I have lived in big cities and had to wear earplugs to get to sleep sometimes. I'll take the out of town places over city dwelling any day.

My girlfriend has a police scanner her mom got her. Lots of time things go on we never hear about on the news. I may have to get me some earplugs. I live on the back of the apartment and right across from a business's parking lot.

Oh yeah, it makes you feel like a hibernator or a hibernating idiot, doesn't it? lol My husband and I had that happen to us a few times and we didn't know a thing about it till the incident had passed. We were like, What? When? Where?! But we do live a ways off the road so it's no wonder we miss a lot of the 'action' that goes on in the neighborhood.... which is just fine by us!! lol We like our peace and quiet.

I know. Not good to have dangerous things going on and that could affect us and we aren't even aware of it.

Yes there are things that happen around me and I do not know about it.. I do not really watch the news either, unless I happen to catch the weather.. Too much negative stuff on the news these days.. and well nothing has really changed... hopefully one day it does... we're just not there yet... If I need to know something I have some neighbors that are good friends and they will let me know...

Same here. I don't care for the added downer of the news in my depressed world. I just don't need it.

It could have been that you were lucky to be inside and knew nothing of it. You would not have wanted to be out there if shots were fired. Things happen all the time that the majority of us know nothing about, they never make the news even in the local paper. Just 200mtrs away at night some youths set fire to a evergreen hedgerow and the ash was scattered up to 400mtrs. This burning hedge and the attending fire brigade must have caused a great deal of commotion we knew nothing of it at the time. Next morning my car needed washing as it was covered in white ash. Don't worry, your not on your own being in the dark.
