Indian eateries- be careful.

Indian eateries are often accused of not maintaining food safety standards properly. A central food safety law has finally been instituted and is going to be enforced very soon. Among other things, the most important aspect of it is that henceforth it will look into food safety violations by restaurants and manufacturers and provide compensation to victims. The Food Safety Standards Act promises to set up international food safety standards and apply them to the domestic food industry. It will obviously make them acceptable to foreigners who often complain of substandard and unhygienic foods served by Indian eateries. Thus Indian eateries that do not maintain food safety standards may find going tough before long. So try to change yourselves.

We had a Indian eaterie here for awhile. I went there for lunch one day and it was pretty good. Now I don't know if it was because of anything to do with The Food Safety Standards Act or not but they weren't here very long. Now we have an Eqyptian eaterie and a Greek one. I would like to try the Greek one.

Indian eateries abroad will not come under this act, it will cover only those Indian eateries that are within the territory of India.

This is a good step in the right direction by the Indian Govt. The idea is good but the implementation may not be as ideal as required. Many of the officials responsible for the implementation of the food standards may take these standards as an excuse to harass eateries for their own benefit and to extort money for themselves. It all depends on how diligently these standards are implemented.

No doubt food must be prepared and served in hygenic condition. It is good thing that Indian government going to enforce safety law. I think this law is already enforced. Every district have food inspector who have right to take samples of any eatables items. But it is not much effective.

Hi, That's bad, I do love Indian food like curry-based recipes. Hot peppered ones I also like. Maybe I should make my own in that case, eating out only in ones that passes safety standards.
