Saw a lot of wildlife on a family walk and personal bike ride.

Garter snake sunning itself on the recreation trai - This was just a cool picture and one of the few animal shots I took on our travels. One of my sons took some as well. I'll let him post them himself.

We went for a long walk with the family today. After getting home I went cycling for a bit by myself because the weather was just so nice. I love to see wildlife along the way. We saw lots. My son got some excellent picture of squirrels. The other day he got some of ducks, pigeons, gulls and other wildlife. Making for an enjoyable staycation this year. The snake picture turned out so well. I had to be careful not to ride over him with my bike. I know some people hate snakes but they to a lot to control the rodent population, besides that there are no poisonous species in our area.

There isn't much wildlife where I live now (unless you count the squirrels and a feral cat or two), but where we used to live there was a lot. We lived near an irrigation runoff ditch that was quite large and appealed to all kinds of birds from avocets to ducks and blue herons. On the other side was a large field, so we had foxes, raccoons and skunks along with a deer now and then and a few snakes. I really miss it all. I'm glad you enjoyed your walk and ride.

I know what you mean. I will never get over missing the countryside. I hope you can soon move out to the country into a place that suits you.

I miss living out in the country. Seeing a bit of wildlife in town here helps but it doesn't really satisfy. We will move on from here at some point in the future. Hoping that we have the kind of home we are looking for.

I live in Winnipeg and when I go for a walk or even when I get a ride, there are the usual squirrels, but also gophers, and one morning even saw a fox, plus the usual assortment of birds. I think that when people started building houses and settling down, the animals did not scurry way into the wilderness. They just stayed around. In fact some of the animals like the rabbits and birds here are so bold, they just move aside when you are walking down the street. Can't stand snakes.

Some of those environmentalists think that once construction starts all the wild animals scurry for the hills. Well they don't. They probably think of a tv tower as a new tree to build a nest, or the place under a house as a nice cave to raise their young. I have had this rabbit in my back yard and where he comes out, I never found out, and there are lots of squirrels in our neighbourhood. I live in a residential neighbourhood and there are quite a number of trees here. Even in the downtown area, there are parks and trees around, so that would keep the animals here.

We're right in the middle of the city. The wildlife is attracted to the Humphrey's Creek trail though because there are places down in there where you wouldn't know you were in the city. Besides the snake there are lots of Mallards, Pheasants and other birds. I did see a deer in there once as well as a pair of Pintails. Our pair of beavers though got deported. They got a little carried away with their construction projects and became a problem for a whole section of town. The main dam and the lodge are still there though.

Sounds like such a wonderful time, have you gone apple picking yet?

Not many good apple trees close to us. The only one I know of close by has the wormiest shriveled up little apples you ever saw. When I live in Quebec we lived out in the Townships where there were lots of apple trees.

I live near a very large river here. People come to enjoy many activities along the river; they walk, jog, ride a bike, or just sit on the benches enjoying the nature... Sometimes we can even see some dolphins swimming around the river...

Dolphins would be wonderful to see. I've seen them in the ocean but even though I'm sure our river here has salt water in it during high tide I've never seen one in it.

Do you know what kind of snake that is? Here, we have king snakes, gopher snakes, rattlers, and a few others. Our rattlers are quite shy.

This is just a garter snake. They're pretty common and harmless.

I accidentally ran over a tiger snake with a ride-on mower one day - then couldn't find it. I thought it was going to come up from underneath and was trying to keep my feet in the air while watching for him.

I don't think the area where we live right now has any remotely dangerous snakes. I have been places with rattlesnakes but I've never been bothered.

I very much like the sound of your walk and then cycle ride. I like it when I see squirrels and think they are ever so sweet looking indeed. I often see sea gulls because I live just three miles away from the sea. Likewise I often see pigeons and did so yesterday. I asked one to get out the road I was driving along. I am glad that your home country doesn't have any poisonous snakes. Yesterday we bought some bread to feed the ducks and pigeons. We didn't see any of the swans but we saw a few sea gulls.

Not any poisonous snakes in this area. Canada is a big place though. I know that there is a rare rattlesnake species in southern Ontario that is poisonous. I don't know about the western Canada. I do enjoy hiking and cycling in the country though.

that's great knowing that the snakes at your place are non poisonous. Although they are so please keep your son away from wild life. If he goes like that alone something may cause him problem. take care of him..

Not terribly concerned about my son. He's nineteen and pretty much can take care of himself. My kids have been taught to behave responsibly around wildlife anyway. I'm glad they are environmentally aware and enjoy the natural world as much as I do.
