In Dover New Hampshire, a school board member is pushing to ban football in the high school. Dr Paul Butler, a retired physician says football puts the kids at risk of brain damage later in life. http://www.myfoxdc.com/story/19722262/push-to-ban-football-at-a-new-hampshire-high-school What do you think of this push? In my opinion, we might as well require everybody to wear helmets all day. It is ridiculous to stop every behavior that may lead to injury. This would include walking, running, playing games. There is not an activity out there with a 100% chance of no injury. What do you think?

I don't think high school football should be banned. Teenagers can get hurt in many sports and we certainly can't ban the item where so many people get hurt the car. I think we should require that equipment should be worn to help prevent injuries. Several things that cause more injuries are not enough sleep, poor eating and not properly warming up. We need to be more concerned about these things now; specially not enough sleep. Many accidents could be prevented, as we see people yawning a lot.

I believe that there is so much stimulus due to technology. Most teens are not getting enough sleep because they are up all night on face book and the likes.

I would not like to watch my son playing American football, that's for sure. OK kids get hurt in sport but as an outsider it looks to me that the whole point of the game is to knock someone stupid. How ridiculous it is to have a sport where the body has to be hamnpered by layers of protective and restrictive clothing! Now the old Olympians knew a thing or two, they pursued their sport with not a stitch on.

I agree with you, what about boxing and wrestling? I say let's pass out the hard hats and let the games begin! Every sport has possibilities of getting injuries, a person should know this when they're trying out. Risks are taken and they know this going in.

My first thought on reading your discussion post was "so what? having teenagers puts mothers at risk of brain injury every day?" But seriously? A lot fewer people got hurt in a lot of sports before they started making them safer. I know that sounds counter-intuitive, but consider how things have changed. Look at the gear the players wear. They have so much padding, helmets that are engineered to withstand enormous amounts of pressure and still protect. Players who feel they are at little risk are likely to take bigger risks and suffer injury just because they don't think they can get hurt. In fact, this is a basic teen attitude anyway. They are all invincible, that's why they do stupid things so often. Another example is hockey. I watched ice hockey for years when no one wore a helmet. There were fights, there were hard body checks, it was a rough and tumble game. But the very first time I ever heard of a player with a serious head injury occurred since they started wearing helmets. You might not swing that stick at someone's head if you they didn't have a helmet you thought would protect them. Yes, there is risk in everything. Just letting your kid climb on the jungle gym at the school playground puts them at risk of falling. I think the society's focus on trying to wrap everyone in cotton batting has actually made them less aware of dangers and more convinced than ever that nothing will ever happen to them.

Rollo, that is very good point. It is a well known fact that football player get hurt a lot more with the better helmets than when they wore the leather helmets. Maybe we could all become bubble bys, clearly people are moving away from human interaction. Then we just have to worry about arthritis, carpel tunnel and eye issues!
