Ran over a nail today!

Canada
October 4, 2012 7:28pm CST
Today did not end well. I've ridden a lot of miles in my life and have flatted on tacks, thorns, pieces of glass, rim cuts but believe it or not this is my first nail. Big sucker too, two and a half incher from somebody's nail gun. I really wish they hadn't thrown the bent nail out into the street. Went all the way through my tube and put two holes in it for me to repair. Adding insult to injury, I slipped on the stairs bringing the bike to the basement and sprained my ankle. Doesn't appear to be a serious sprain. I'll know more tomorrow when I try walking on it. Hopefully it isn't going to hamper me much. Besides that it wasn't a bad day. I did a little solo shopping. Picked up a couple things for the wood shop and a new pair of sunglasses. As long as I can still walk and ride tomorrow when I get out of bed I'll be happy.

I feel for you! It happened to me too and also got a few flats with my car and even have stepped on a few boards that had nails on it.

Nails are very useful but not a good thing to have just laying around. In the foot is no fun. I haven't actually done that but I know a lot of people who have.

hoo b oy what do you want to bet by morning that ankles going to bv swollen up ?I a m a party pooper but thats always been m y experiences with the cussed sprains.,I am glad otherwise it was not a bad day .Hope I am wrong and you will be fine in the morning. one time on the freeway I and my husband and little girl were spinning along on the la freeway when a keg of n ails from a rooofing co.truck toppled onto the freeway. we tried to slow down to avoid them but too late, all four tires went poof. so a really kind Italian man in a limo had his driver stop and he took us into LA to his tire shop and he paid for four new tires for u s,. okay it would take awhile so he took us to a cafe which was part of a string of restaurants he owned in the US here and we learned he also owned the roofing company who lost the keg of roofing nails on the freeway too,. that was one interesting night. Our son was with my parents as we called and had my folks meet his school bus.It was bedtime when we got back and our son wished he had got to share in the adventure too.

Well it's morning and I can walk. I will try cycling later in the day. Have to put my bike back together first. I think it will hamper me a little for a week or so but then will get a lot better. The swelling isn't too bad at all. I've had a lot of bad sprains in the past. First time I did this one in highschool playing basketball. I actually dislocated it that time. My leaping ability was never the same afterwards. It was very nice of your Italian benefactor to be there to set things right. That was a great story to share with us.

It sounds like it really takes little to make you happy after all. I am so sorry you had those mishaps. Could not have just one, had to have both. Have a better day tomorrow.

I've sprained this ankle many times and I am relieved this morning to find I still have basic mobility. Hard to tell how bad something like this is going to be until the following day. Gas is so expensive it is really important that I can do most of my commuting on my bicycle. I doubt if it is going to be an issue. I can live with a little pain.

Ugh, sounds like a horrible day to me...I hate it when construction workers leave nails, they need to have a metal can attached to their pants so they can deposit old nails there. A couple weeks ago I was dog sitting for my neighbor and for the first 3 days, they were re-roofing her house and I cringed as I rode my bike over there, looking carefully for anything shiny I needed to avoid. The worse was at night when I would take the van over, hoping they had cleaned up before they left. I have to admit though, from seeing the mess from previous workers, these guys really did a wonderful job cleaning up. There wasn't one nail in the driveway and a couple days ago when my neighbor and I were working in her flower bed up against the house, I only found 1 nail and just two of those round things they use for roofing. So I know if we ever need roofing done on our home, who I would call...

Oh good, so you got your tire fixed then? If I had ran over a nail, it would be a lonnnggg time before it was fixed, (I am totally not mechanically inclined and wouldn't know how to fix a bike tire)...

I'm usually on the lookout for debris on the road. I have to have an eye out for traffic too though. I will be more careful riding past this construction site next time I go by that way. Some do a great job of cleaning up but there are some that don't care either. They will toss a bent nail any old direction. I'm mobile today though. This could have been a whole lot worse.

Fixing a bike tire with a patch kit really isn't that hard. When I was touring I took some pride in being able to patch a bike tire and be back riding within ten to fifteen minutes. Yesterday's hole through both sides of the tube was a little more difficult than normal.

I imagine this is "tomorrow", right? Is your ankle better? If I had seen this discussion earlier, I'd have told you that you should put ice on that ankle which would help keep swelling down. Are you able to walk on it now? I certainly hope so! I've only run over one thing that flattened a tire but that was a big, fat screw. This was a car tire and I couldn't fix it myself. I took it to a garage to be fixed. The mechanic took a look at it, looked up at me and said, "You really screwed this one, huh?" Three dollars later, my tire had a brand new plug and was almost as good as new. (That was a LONG time ago. I'm sure it wouldn't cost less than $10 these days, probably a lot more to plug a hole in a tire.)

I am ambulatory this morning. In a few minutes I'm going to abandon myLot for the time being and get the bike back together. I will take a test ride see if it causes me much pain. I suspect that I'll be fine. I've hurt this ankle far worse than this in the past. Only thing is you don't really know how bad a sprain is right away. Right now I have to be careful but I don't think I will be prevented from carrying on my normal activities. Ten dollars for a car tire repair would be a really nice thing. I think I paid more than that the last time I had a repair like that done.

Oh, man, sorry to hear about your bike tire and your ankle. Hope you got some bike hole repair stuff! Keep the ankle propped up and ice on it. I remember one time I fell on the ice and really didn't think too much of it. The next morning my whole foot and ankle was swollen. Went to the doctor and ended up I sprained my little toe! Oh how fun that was!!

Holes are all repaired although that ended up being more work than I usually have to put into that. I had better pick up a new patch kit before they take them off the shelves for the winter. I only have two patches left. Ankle is tender. The swelling though is minimal and I have full range of motion. The are some positions which are excruciating so it will hamper me a little for at least a week. Might still feel a twinge or two a month from now yet. Just know this from cold hard experience.

I've got a flat bicycle tire at least a couple of times. Last time I took out my bicycle in the spring the first time that year and got a flat tire after a few minutes. I haven't used the bike after that, and it was three years ago, I think..?? Well, walking is good for health.

Yes, I miss the bicycle at times, but it needs some other things to be done as it is over 20 years old. I have a place where they do reparations not far from here - let's see if I can have it done next spring. I live in a small place, so walking has not been a big problem..

Walking is good but I can ride bike a lot farther than I can walk. I can also do it faster. I used to be able to fix a flat tire on the road in ten minutes. I'm a little out of practice now. This was my first flat in quite awhile.

I remember a construction crew doing something at one of the houses there earlier but they were all cleaned up and gone. No way of really figuring out who did it. I'm not sure how effective a complaint would be. If I knew where to send the complaint, I would. Might lead to a crew supervisor speaking to and watching his crew a little more closely. Some small businesses actually take complaints seriously.

I do hope you got a tetanus shot. I stepped on some broken glass years ago and had to get one because it was years before since I had one. Hope you are better now.

I think you misunderstood. The nail went through my bike tire. I'm fine. The tire has been patched and is working well again. Last time I went for a tetanus shot was several years ago. There was some barbwire buried in the ground and I hit it with the lawnmower. After disentangling everything I thought to pull it out of the ground and throw it away. It didn't come easier and came out all of a sudden. One of the barbs stuck me right in the knee. Went in deep too. Dirty, rusty steel not a good combination. I went to the doctor explained what happened and they gave me the shot.

Oh man what a day. I would be really mad about this because of someone else not having the decency to throw this in the garbage you ran iver it in the street and now you have to fix your tire and the tube and you have a sprained ankle. I have huge issues with people who litter so hearing this makes me really angry.

I'm not a fan of litterbugs. I take a dim view of anyone throwing sharp objects into the street. I think smashed bottles have cost me more flats in my career than anything else.

What a day! I don't like it when people are too irresponsible to leave a nail lying around the road. But it happens! Since this response is a little bit late, I do hope you were able to ride the next day.

I had it fixed in short order. I'm about as good a bike mechanic as the guys in the bike shops. I do most of my work myself.

That person who threw that on the street was not thinking about who might be hurt by that. I've had some bad spills on bikes before and a nail into your tire could have sent you reeling. A sprained ankle is not nice either but at least you didn't hurt yourself worse when it happened. I hope your ankle won't hurt too badly so you can go cycling again tomorrow.

That repair does sound costly. I'm glad the ankle is alright, like I said, sounds like it could have been worse.
