Today most public places have wifi connections but most of them are set passwords already. But if you can find a free wifi connection, do you dare to use it? As some free wifi connection may be dangerous as the bad people will use it to steal data from your mobile phone, tablet or laptop. I don't really care about it as it needs high tech. Besides, there is nothing important in my mobile phone or tablet because I don't use them to pay online.

I was actually quite annoyed, when I went away in September I left my laptop at home thinking I wouldn't need it, it never occurred to me that there would be free wi-fi when I was away. There was a big sign up when I checked in to say that all rooms have wi-fi and the password. Next time I will take my laptop! Ideal for the evenings, although sometimes it's better to go on holiday and do something different, the temptation would be to spend too much time on my laptop when away!

Hello :)
I am aware of the danger of possibly exposing your datas to 'peepers' when you use free wifi. I try not to use them, but a few times when I get bored waiting in such places I would. But not before I set my security wall high on my laptop, and never for too long; say 15-20 minutes. I don't have any top secrets info in my laptop, lol! My phone, however, is another thing, so I don't use free wifi with my phone.

I have a wireless laptop. I have tried to use the free wifi down by the college but it wouldn't work. I wonder if it had to do with my wireless laptop. I think people are going to try to steal whatever they can. These uncrupulous people can get your name and need very little information to start up accounts in your name. It is amazing what they can do.

If you think nothing important in your mobile devices is worth stealing by thief, then i guess it is alright for you to use the free wifi. After all, only you know what's important in your own information data store inside your mobile devices, i am not against you using the free wifi with no encryption software or additional security layer while online.

I will not now because i have vital personal and company information in my computer easily accessible, i can't take the risk of getting them stolen by hacker through free wifi. Until i got my state of the art encryption software install, then only i will use it. So long as you know what are you going to face in a free wifi environment, you should be alright if you choose to use it.

Youless, i seldom want to use the free wifi connection because my son is with me. Whenever he is with me, i don't have much time to go online. Besides that, going online using phone is too small. It makes my eyes pain. Since i never use my laptop to make any payment online, i usually would use my laptop at free wifi area. It is much better than using my phone to go online.

Hi,
Some establishments offer free wi-fi connections so it is not against the rule to use them. Cafes, hotels, malls and offices install them for their costumers and some signal spill over to the next door as far as fifty meters away. Some people who don't want to have intruders in their connections protect them with passwords so it is not possible to get into them unless one is a hacker.

Where I work, the floor where we're at has no wi-fi connection. But since we do share the same building with a hotel, we can connect with free wi-fi at the lobby. The guards and receptionists don't seem to mind us even if we're like a throng of people busy with their mobile phones. But one thing I've noticed is the wi-fi in that hotel lobby is pretty strong.

In September, I got a smart phone and now I use it a lot to use wifi to surf on the Internet so long as I can get the free service. In our school, each office has a wifi connection. It is much more convenient to use wifi. When I was waiting for my bus at the Northern Bus Station in Hangzhou, I was so happy that I could use its wifi service and it did help me to kill time. I don't care about my information stolen because I don't think anyone can make it unless he is a hacker. Have a good day, youless.

Pesonally speaking, I will take advantage of free wifi if it is accessiable. The speed of wifi is much faster than that of 3G or 2G and it is totally free. I know free wifi hotspot may be set as a trap to attract the attention of people. Just as you said, we'd better not deal with financial affairs online through such free wifi. If we only read articles or watch movies through such wifi hotspot, I'm sure we will lose nothing.

Yes I did, but only for unimportant browsing or login to some websites which I don't use to reveal my identity. I never dare login to important sites like paypal or go online shopping using my credit card, for that kind of secure issues I always login from home.

I have used a free wifi connection for a long time, about one year long. It was safe and nothing wrong have happened. However, i think you are right, using free wifi connections may be not safe. You know, when we using PC or laptop to connect Internet, there is always a router located between our home and outside. This router, acts as a firewall to refuse all the dangerous data from outside. But the free wifi connection has no any protective facility to prevent potetial danger from outside. Anyone can connect directly without password. So maybe some hakers can steal our private infromation saved in our phone.

I have never used the Wi-fi feature of my phone, and I do not have a gadget like a tablet or a laptop that I use to connect online when outdoors. I know some people who would hang out for hours at a certain place just to get advantage of free wi-fi! Not for me, though, I'm not a big mobile internet user. I never even intended to get a smart phone but was coerced into doing so by my boyfriend who went phone shopping with me to give me "advice." I do read/send emails using my phone, and sometimes log on to social networking sites using the old fashioned "data enable" way. Even if I am sitting at a coffeee shop where there is free wi-fi, I don't really use it.

Hi,
I always log in to available unencrypted wi-fi around the office, having known the source server. I have not tried going public for I don't usually carry a laptop in public. Besides, it do present a security risk logging to a free zone, maybe if it does not take more than an hour, hit and run is the mode.

Yes, I use the free wifi connections when they are available. I don't think that anyone would care about the data that I've stored in my laptop. Also, when I drink coffee at a coffee shop I always connect to their public wifi network and check my emails or my facebook from my smartphone. A lot of people do that as well, and I've never heard anyone that had a problem with data stolen or something similar.

Hey thanks a ton for posting such discussion. Yes u are absolutely right. It is always a dangerous affair to use free wi-fi connection as it would mean violating and infringement of others privacy. Besides if u have free wifi connection, then it will give others a good opportunity to steal away the important documents from our folder and might prove risky and dangerous in the long run.
What say?
