Squirrels, Cute or a Pest?

I think they are cute for the most part but here they can also be a nuisance when they dig up the plants I have in my flower pots. Such as the seedlings that grow slower than the other plants, they have dug up three of them at least four times where I have to wash them off and find them in the dirt to replant them. Its a good thing they are easy to replant at the stage they are. I even tried pitting cayenne pepper on those plants and the dirt but i guess the rain washed it away. Do you have squirrels where you live, and do you find them to be cute or a pest?

They ca be cute, but also vicious. Years ago, we had a squirrel chew through our windows in our trailer camping. It attacked our then dog, to the point where we had to take her to the veets. We dont have many squirrels around her, the next town over does.

Wow, I'm so sorry about the attack on your dog. Was there a nest nearby? Yes they can be vicious, most people don't realize that. One baby one dig walk up to my dad in the garage awhile back and he picked it up, and could hold it as if it were already domesticated. We tried to bring it to a guy who handles many kinds of animal rescues and such in town but he said to just let it go. My dad brought it up to his ex-co-worker's home where there are a ton of squirrels and it ran so fast up one of the trees. I hope it survived. I had made a video of my dad holding it too but cant find it now. My friend on FB just tried to rescue a baby one recently or so and she said she got bit.

I'm not sure if there was a nest near by, but it chewed everything up, and ate our food. That is so cute, I hope it survived. Being a baby could also make it more trustworthy, and allowing of people.

I think they are cute pests. . .LOL! They do tend to chew on my plants and dig seeds up, and they will sometimes munch on our (decorative) pumpkins. But they also bring us new plants by burying their seeds and nuts in our yard, so I guess it all evens out in the end. I actually think chipmunks are worse pests--even though they are actually even cuter than squirrels. They eat the plants on my front porch, dig up everything, and have no fear at all. And they love coming into the garage and making nests! So, if I had to choose, I would rather have more squirrels and less chipmunks in our yard.

Now that think about it, they will eat the pumpkin seeds, I had them here doing that one year awhile back--I almost forgot about it. The only plants we get from them is the oak trees and acorn trees from them "planting" acorns and such. We don't want those, they end up being more added 'weeds' to pull, sigh. I have only seen a few chipmunks around and not in the past few years, they were after the sunflower seeds from the few larger sunflowers we had grown.

We actually have some gourds this year that we suspect were gifts from the squirrels, because we never had them (or planted them) before. We do get random trees too, and yes, they just become weeds. As for the lack of chipmunks in your yard. . . count your blessings!

I love gourds, tell them to come here and plant those! :-D But then the ground hogs would probably eat those too. OK, will count my blessing with those chipmunks, you seem to know what you're talking about with those.

We leave food out for the birds like seeds and nuts on our fence and the squirrels just come along and eat it all. If you think about it though they are kind of just like rats with furry tails. At the same time though I do feel bad for them when I see them splattered across the road as road kill as I don't think anything deserves to die that way. We don't have a lot of vegetables this time of year though so they don't cause us any problems in that respect.

Yea, my dad calls them tree rats. So thats about the same opinion on them. I feel bad for any animals killed on the road as well, it's such a sad way to die.

I haven't seen a squirrel my entire life. Are they considered rodents? Do they eat vegetation away and all that? They look cute on TV though. I guess they're a CUTE PEST in my opinion having heard from this post.

It might be a thing where if you live out of the country you don't have them, & yes they are pretty much a rodent. Where do you live? They don't eat much vegetation really, they do chews wires sometimes, eat the bird's food, and such like that most of the time. They will bury thing like acorns all around and thats why we find a stray acorn tree growing here and there in the Spring.

I think they are pests because of the same reason you gave. They eat the vegetables in the garden also. I have one which has made a home in out porch in front. The porch roof is high and since it is a old house. So he has taken advantage since I can't reach there to remove him. He is breaking the roof tiles also. i have to bring a worker and have it fixed and remove the squirrel from there. they are pests. Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful day ahead.

Be careful of a nest to remove them from, especially if there are babies. They can rip any one to shreds if that happens. They are pretty much cute but they do do damage here and there. What kind of vegetables did they eat that you grew?

I love squirrels I have one on a tree in my back yard here. He leaves early in the am and comes back at night. I assume he sleep in the tree. I give him water there, and he seems to drink it. I dont mind him here. Hes kinda cute.

That is one cute squirrel, I guess there is no garden where you live though? I bet he goes into the other gardens and digs, etc to find his food? I'm glad you give him water and like having him in the tree.

Yes, they do fall under both of thee categories. This is quite commonplace, and we often dislike creatures that are very beneficial to us purely on the grounds of appearance, yet are attracted to those which can play havoc with our environment. It seems strange that we are not more strongly governed in our taste towards those which prove useful, but I suppose that is typical for human beings. Despite their obvious value to us, not many people are attracted to bees, yet we often find colourful birds very desirable even though they can devastate our crops and pollute the cities.

I would never call animals a pest. You could cover the plants someoneway, find creative alternatives. I have 6 rescued animals and I endlessly solve the problems they bring because they don't know what they are doing, they are not doing to harm us or anything and we messed nature so much that's not their fault that animals are coming to the cities and having to live with us, we stole their homes.

I believe that they are cute in pictures and in movies. I live in the Philippines and I think we don't have a lot of those,it is not indigenous here. But we have those rodents which I consider them as nuisance. We have those white, bright and not black ones which I made it as a pet when I was a kid though. Thanks

hey thanks for sharing this discussion. Well of course there is no doubt that squirrels are very cute in nature but they can mess up things at times by digging up in your backyard and thereby spoiling your garden. We have many squirrels in our garden and we hardly pay any heed to what they do as they come to our garden only in search of their food. I am glad that they do not do any such activity of digging in our garden. What say?

I wouldn't pay that much mind to them either if it weren't for them getting into these particular pots I have, I had to pot some of my plants up like that to protect them from the other critters and keep them, closer to the house-- from the groundhogs. It seems like a battle of eternity with these animals here. The squirrels will get close to the house, they don't care and even get into a house if they find a place to do that. Luckily that has never happened here. You don't want to disturb a nest with baby squirrels in them with the momma squirrel around, either. They are vicious in that circumstance.

I love squirrels and I think they are cute. You have to understand that more and more we are building our homes where they used to live and forage for food.
