I grew up with other people making meat and veggie pie or just plain meat pie. But my family didn't make it. I have been reading about how to make it. So I bought some pie crust, veggies and meat. Cooked everything to almost done and then put them in a shell and baked them. I'm sure the same thing could be done with tofu or other things like maybe beans and veggies. We have had leftover chicken and veggies. Hamburger and veggies as well as chicken sausage and veggies. Ground pork is hard to get here. Pork sausage is easy to get, but the extra salt that isn't so much in a couple of low salt chicken sausages, is too much salt. Many people make a half pork and half hamburger meat and veggie pie often with mashed potatoes and gravy. So have you ever made a protein of some type and veggie pie or eaten any? In American, we have pot pies that are our meat and veggie pies. My parents came from Canada where the French Canadians have lots of tourtierre (spelling?). I haven't seen a vegetarian version at any vegetarain or mostly vegetarian pot lucks yet.

We have eaten pot pies a lot, both commercial and homemade. Seems the most prevalent is turkey, after Thanksgiving. As I get older I find more and more similarities in cuisine, but different names. For instance, my hubby is from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, where a lot of people from Wales and Finland settled. Miners. A favorite lunch box meal is the Pasty. A folded hand held pie. Often contains ground beef, rutabagas, potatoes, onions and carrots. In Nebraska it is Runza--cabbage, meat and cheese in a bun, and in Kansas it is a Bierock, same thing. I have a casserole for Runza/Bierock that has and upper and lower crust made of crescent roll dough. Very good. Then of course there is the Polish Pierogi. Can even have eggs. Then the German Mennonite Verinika which is eggs and cottage cheese. Beni Bierogi is a dessert made with mashed pinto beans and vanilla sauce. . . I guess that might be vegetarian. Southwestern areas have tacos, both hard, which is open and soft which are rolled like a burrito, but smaller. Of course they have Empanadas as well. Then you move to the Bisquik impossible pies. . . usually meat and veggie and a can of soup or some tomato sauce or gravy topped with a Bisquick topper. Yummy, it is fall and it is time to eat these warm and substantial foods.

That's a different impossible pie than we have. That sounds like something for us to try. I think a desert with pinto beans and vanilla sauce would be a hard sell to my husband.

I have done shepherd's pie which is a combination minced meat, cheese, macaroni, basil leaves,(tulsi), french beans, et al. Ofcourse it needs to be covered with potato mash and the baked.

Yes, I did not even get to Shepherd's Pie or Tater Tot casserole, which are really similar. Some people insist that a real shepherd's pie will have ground lamb.

The cooking classes that I attended had a recipe for shepherd's pie that suggested minced meat. I use shredded chicken as we do not eat red meat. The macaroni and cheese in it makes it really tasty. One can add a bit of mashed potato too besides using it for covering the pie.

That's a really good sounding shepherd's pie. Where I live, it's leftover corn, hamburger, and mashed potatoes, layered, and heated thru. Often the hamburger is spiced with black pepper or chili or cayenne pepper.

These are so good. I Love homemade meat pies. I have had them where you put the meat, etc. with your mashed potatoes in a shell and it is great as well. Personally you are now making me hungry, and wish I had the time and money to put one of these together.

Time, can't help you. Money, can help you a little. Two for the price of one pie crusts are great and some people who make crust from scratch can do it for even less. All ingredients as leftovers. Voila! Cheaper.

When my husband was alive, and the boys had not gone and married out, I used to make beef stew with carrots, onions, and peas sometimes, and if there was too much would make meat pies.. I grew up on meat pies, being Canadian, but I found I never had that much luck and did not like chicken pies. I have also made shepherd's pie with the mashed potatoes and grated cheddar cheese on top. The thing is that even though there are vegetables in them, we do not call them meat and vegetable pies. I have made the recipes out of my head as a way to stretch leftovers. I find that it is better then the ones you buy in the stores. I guess you could also make Cornish pies or turnovers out of them as well.

I think they're great as a way to use up leftovers. The chicken ones are better with chicken gravy on top. I've never had shepherd's pie with cheese on top. I'd like that. I'm not sure if my husband would or not. The homemade ones definitely taste like the ingredients are fresher. Thanks and take care.

A meat pie here is solid meat. No veggies. So if you said meat pie and it had veggies, someone looking for a totally meat pie would be disappointed or think you misrepresented. Most people call meat and veggie, pot pie here, but since we're in an international site, I thought I'd go with meat and veggie.

Filipinos seldom or if ever make pies in crusts that have meat and vegetables in them, we are already contented with Pizza we however make and at times crave for a food called " empanada", it's something we inherited from the Spanish (most countries that were former Spanish or Portuguese colonies have a version), it's a smaller version and more crescent than round, ours have a filling that ranges from pork to chicken, carrots, potatoes, peas, raisins etc... inside. The sauce is similar to what we use in dimsum and at times put hot chili sauce instead of gravy, really delicious, very convenient to eat too, I buy myself in the mall when we don't have time to make and finish it off while shopping.

We have a lot of wheat in our country and lots of room to grow it. So I can see why big meat pies would be expensive, but a smaller empanada would work beter. Sounds like it tastes good and has a variety of foods in it.

It would be fun, but the rules are against it. People were plagerizing recipes from other sites or taking copywrighted ones from books. So Mylot had to shut that down. It was fun while it lasted.
