Addicted to Soda

I remember when I was a kid my Mom wouldn't drink any milk and rarely water it was soda, nothing but soda. I had gotten used to guzzling it as well in my youth now I drink more water than anything. We had some relatives visiting last week and I was talking to the teenager who is about the size I was at her age. She confessed to drinking up to 7-8 cans of soda a day. If you think about it if there's 150 calories in a soda she's consuming 1050-1200 of her daily calories in just soda! As we were talking I told her she'd probably see some changes if she got rid of the soda and added more produce to her diet. And no potato chips don't count as produce... even though we hope they were from an actual potato at some point! *LOL*

Thanks for posting this discussion. Well i can understand how addicted u are towards soda but i would like to give u a serious advise to cut short your intake of soda as excessive soda in our body is not considered safe and might put our health at risk. It is OK to take soda with drinks or other liquids but mere consumption of soda is not quite a thing that is advisable. What say?

I drink water and milk. It's rare for me to have soda unless eating out. It is the teenager I was hoping to influence on making better choices in beverage.

My little sister is six years younger than me and I actually remember some times that she actually had coke in her bottle when she was a baby. Now me, I won't deny that I am addicted to soda, it is my coffee honestly. There was a time that I could easily drink eight to ten cans every day. However, I've really made an effort to cut down on it in the past couple of years and it has made a difference in my life. I've been able to lose some weight without really trying and I feel better as well. However, I don't think that I will ever reach a point where I am not drinking any soda at all.

That many sodas is also a lot of sugar. When I was a child, we were not allowed soda. Then as we got older we were only allowed diet soda, and we were only allowed two a day. My mom told me she did it to keep us from having a weight problem. But really it only made us determined to have non diet soda when she was not around. Of course when I got old enough and she didn't tell us what to drink or not drink anymore I freely drank Coca-cola. And now when you read about it, the artifical sweeteners are looking to have more health consequences than regular sugar.

When I was a kid we only had diet soda in the house and it was something that was a treat even then. I rarely buy soda for the house, but I will get a 2 liter maybe once every month or so. I can keep it away from my kids, but I have a hard time not drinking soda when I am at work because that is really all that is available other than plain water which I really do not care for. I guess you could say I am addicted to soda.

I can't imagine drinking that much soda--not even the good, natural sodas that I do sometimes have. The mainstream sodas are horribly unhealthy. Where are her parents? Don't they see what their daughter is doing to herself? Or do they simply not care?

Yes..we are always hoping for a real potato or two mixed in our chips. Teens are the hardest ones to get to eat right and they need it the most. I simply got to the point to where I just wouldn't buy sodas. I bought juices and had cold water but not sodas all the time. I wouldn't completely eliminate them, we had some on the weekends sometimes but I certainly watched how many they had. It is easy to get carried away with them.

Soda, depending on the type, also draws the calcium out of your bones. Diet drinks and diet sweeteners still mess up your metabolism and can contribute to obesity and diabetes, and the salt and fat in potato chips are awful. I hope she can learn from you. I am like you, and only have soda as an option at a restaurant, perhaps. My mom drank coffee, occasionally soda, never water. Lots of people in my family claim to hate water. My mom always figured I must be sick, I liked water. I also liked milk, but that was okay. You are doing your best to be a good role model.

it is no wonder that half of North America is overweight due to the bad food choices (myself included) but as for soda, i never really liked it and like it less now that i am older. i am like you and only drink soda once in a blue moon. we bought some for Thanksgiving (our Canadian Thanksgiving was last weekend) and i had one can (it was raspberry gingerale and was pretty good) but i always am thinking of all the sugar that is in one can of soda and what it does to your poor teeth. i mostly drink water and sometimes cranberry juice.

Hi, 3SnuggleBunnies! People have all sort of addictions especially when they are kids. My daughter had a coca-cola period when she was about 5 or 6 years old. I was thinking that this drink was not good for her and after a while she forgot it. But she wasn't drinking 7-8 cans like the teen you speak about, this is too much. We should pay attention to the food and drinks our kids take but usually it's difficult to do it.
