Sensitive To Artificial Light & Central Heating

I'm glad I'm going out tomorrow (albeit over the road for some cheese lol) as I find being indoors is creating headaches, in more ways than one. This is why I despise the darker months as the lights are on earlier (and three of the bulbs at the front have 'gone' again) and the central heating is on more. The two of them combine to give me headaches as the lighting downstairs isn't great anyway. It's the one thing I research the most online: lighting. Sometimes I wish I had heating in my bedroom (ironically) so I can spend more time in there - as I could choose between my lamp I got a few months ago that I'm sure you remember, or the standard light in the ceiling. Neither give me a headache due to the natural light being good in there anyway, apart from when it's dark lol..well, you know what I mean! Do you hate artificial light as much as I do? I was the same in the office as well - always had to get out at lunch-times. I'm toying with the idea of having recessed downlights shown below (not those awful ones that feel like you're being interrogated) in the living-room, with the option of two additional lamps - one at each end of the room - for more subdued lighting whilst on the computer or watching television. http://www.oceanlighting.co.uk/downlights-c76 Do you lie awake thinking about ways to improve how your rooms make you FEEL?

I do not seem to have trouble with the lighting, which is good because I am here a lot. Of course I can easily step outside. I do have rooms that are easier and more pleasant to be in. Also the colors of the window treatments make a difference to me. As for the heating issue, I would get some,( make that a lot), houseplants to help make the indoor environment easier on the lungs. Some are so well known they get sent into space to help keep the air clean and fresh.

That is a fabulous idea, thanks! I've often thought about having a couple of indoor plants but have never got round to it. I remember being at the doctors last week and gazing out of the window of the waiting-room at an amazing two-tone shrub outside. Obviously it was green but it had a lighter shade running down the middle of each leaf..really bright green too. It must've been an evergreen and I'm annoyed with myself for not asking any member of staff what it was. Mind you, that's outside; I want a small plant for in here. I shall ask Mum, see if she can help me as she has a couple of indoor plants.

I don't spend much time thinking about lighting and how I feel in certain rooms. I figure I'm here and make it work for me. I do get out almost daily into the sunlight or 'cloudlight' and when it's dark I'm usually in the bed. Sometime I do get up in the middle of the night and ding around on the computer. The lighting is sufficient so I don't worry about it.

I don't like the self-service checkouts. I figure I'm paying the cashiers within the food costs so if I'm going to do it myself, then my food costs should be discounted.

What a lovely expression..I much prefer 'cloudlight' to er..'dull.' I did indeed go out this afternoon and 7 degrees C with the rain pounding down onto my cat umbrella lol. It did force some air into my lungs though so I can't complain..and I managed to use a self-service till all by myself. Woohoo!

I wish I had more natural light in the house, too. Of course, having a shared wall with the next unit, there's no chance of windows on the north side of the house. And there's very little room between my house and the next house, so the two little windows on the south side (one in the kitchen and one in the loo) don't do much. The kitchen window has a nice view of the neighbor's wall (luckily white), the bathroom one a view of his roof and a bit of the next yard over from him.

Yes, we live in a terraced block so it's similar. The windows we have are at the front and back, nothing at the sides. It is very built up around here too although the raised flower-bed in our yard has helped somewhat. At least I have something different to look at (sat here at my computer) as opposed to er..nothing. GardenGerty has suggested a couple of house plants and I may go down that route as Mum has a few and it definitely helps with the oxygen levels in her home, that's for sure.

Spider plants, pothos and philodendrons are good choices and easy to care for.

If you don't mind, you have memtioned that being sensitive to artificial light runs in your family.I remember the same with your Mum.By the darker months I understand it means day is shorter than night .Over here the days begin to shorten after the summer solstice, the winter solstice is just the opposite. It is said that the days shorten in Britain as the winter comes on.

They do shorten, you're quite right. We have the thing with the clocks as well which is complicated so I won't mention it now. What I do look forward to, however, is 21st December as it goes lighter ever so slightly after that date, until the spring when the clocks alter for the second time in a year. GardenGerty has suggested I get a couple of house plants and the more I think about it, the more I want them. Why I haven't bought any before I do not know, seeing as I spend a lot of time indoors.

Getting your rooms some house plants sounds a good idea. Some of them can purify air of your rooms ,which is likely to relieved your headaches.21st December is just the Winter Solstice .I know you put the clock on an hour in Spring.
