Generic

When I shop I usually buy generic instead of name brand. Most of the generic is just like the name brand anyway. Some one who worked in a factory told me that actually some of the generic are name brands. Some companies order too much of a certain name brand, what's extra they take the name brand label off and put a generic brand on to sell it. Now there are certain foods, I'd rather have the name brand though like Miracle Whip, but when you're broke and trying to save money generic is the way to go. Would you rather have a label brand or generic? Are you like me (if you buy generic) there are certain things label brand is better than generic?

Now that the generic medicine is more appreciated because it costs a lot less than the branded medicines, I buy them now. I used to buy just the branded ones but realized that it has the same efficacy as the branded ones anyway. But with medicines like 3rd generation antibiotics, I mostly rely on the branded ones.

Yes, even medicine comes in the generic form now days. I always ask my doctor or the pharmacist if they have the same effect first.

We also prefer generic medicines. One time my sister got a bad case of cough and the doctor gave her a prescription for antibiotics which costs 200 pesos ($4.80) each capsule! We asked my nurse sister and she gave us the generic name of that particular antibiotics and it only costs 59 pesos ($1.40)! After one week of taking the generic medicine as prescribed, my sister is well and okay. To think that we need to buy 14 capsules for her. Imagine that.

I do buy generic for most things. I agree with you, especially miracle whip! haha. Toilet paper is a biggy. I will pay through the nose for good TP!

As long as the TP isn't like sand paper, I'm not too proud to buy generic! You're money is just going down the toilet anyway, so if I can save money...

I like Angel Soft, maybe it's just because of the name!

Well,it doesn't save money if you don't like it!There are some generic things I really like and prefer to the name brands.Like whipped cream.....store brand,lite....I think taste better then Cool Whip. And I LOVE the canned pork that is from the government. That is the only place you can get it too.Soo,it has been a very long time since I have had it. But,if I can save money getting a generic band of food and it's healthy, tastes good then I'll get it.However there is no point buying something to save money and then getting home, cooking it and the family doesn't like it then it ends up in the fridge and turns into a science project! Then they are still hungry and they go back and find something unhealthy to snack on or something that was planned for another meal or to stick in the kids lunches.

Very true, but you never know until you try it, I guess!

Over the years I have gotten less picky about brand name foods. I think most of them taste about the same anyway. I don't have a ton of money to spend on food, so I go to Aldi's a lot and get the Aldi's brand of things. Most of the time I can't really tell a difference. I know my son hates generic Spaghetti O's. I agree with him on that one, but I don't buy those often anyway.

I love that store. The prices are fantastic, and their products are often times better than the brand name stuff.

Oh yes..there is a huge difference in some of the generic brands and the name brands to me. Mayo is one of them. Sauces and such are those things that have very particular tastes. I like a marinade called Dale's that I wouldn't take anything for..lol. If you get mac n cheese in a box there is a huge difference in say the Velveeta brand and the off brand. I did one time try a store brand that was pretty impressive though.

I've found that for most products, the generic is better than the name brand. For some reason, I always think the generic versions of cereal like fruit loops and captain crunch are better than the actual name brand. Most of the time the generic tastes the same as the brand name, and in some cases even better than the brand name. I do think there are certain products that I prefer to get name brand because of either quality or taste. Lol but of course I can't remember which products those are. My mom and I always have to remind each other which generic brand is good and which one isn't because we're always forgetting.

Oh, I know what you mean, you realize afterwards the generic brand wasn't as good as the name brand! Then it's too late!

Mostly I go for generic or store brands. Hubby eats Miracle Whip, and that is about all we are stuck on. I actually prefer the store brand or generic on many things. I also shop at Aldi stores which is an even bigger savings.

I pretty much always get the generic store brand rather than a named brand because moneys tight and I need to save as much money as possible. Most of the generic brands taste as good as the named brand,I would assume that it's pretty much the same stuff. Though I eat quite a lot of noodles and I have found that some of the generic brands can be very bland and flavourless. Though they don't taste to bad if you add a few spices for seasoning. If I could afford to I would only get named brand food but you have to live within your means.

With food, I usually buy cheap on some of them and I`m picky on others. I have my brands as oil goes, but I can make very nice rice with a not so expensive product. I buy generic medicine if I can have them. New medicines don`t have their generic sisters: labs own the trade mark, or whatever is called, for some time.

For medicines, they say generic has the same effect as the branded ones. The only difference is that the branded ones are already bought by big pharmaceutical companies that is why it is expensive and claims to have a better effect. I buy branded only when the generic doesn't take effect on me like the pain relievers. But antibiotics and the like, I take the generic. As for the food, I buy generic ones, simply because they're cheaper

I have actually found some generic, or store brand, products that I like better than the brand name. However, there are some things that I still buy only the brand name, such as my clothes washer detergent and kitty litter. The generic of these items just don't do the job right.

Hi, Generic has the same composition and effect with branded ones. The only difference is their price where, for some reason, branded ones cost higher. Needless to say, its generic for me, unless the doctor says it can't be had than the branded one.

I am very picky when it comes to what I eat and what I drink. Most things have to be name brands like ketchup, I only eat Heinz. I don't care what anyone says Heinz is the best. I've tasted other brands and I don't like them although I will use Hunts if I have to. Bread has to be Merita, I don't like store brand breads. I only use vegetable oil because I'm allergic to peanut oil and canola oil. Breakfast cereals I only eat Special K. There's a lot of foods that I won't accept generics in and I don't want generic Benadryl or Tylenol. I also don't like generic sodas, it has to be Diet Coke or nothing. Some things I will use the generic in but most things I won't. People argue you save money, not if you won't eat it. I'm not going to buy generic store brand dog food for my dogs so why do it for the family? You're right, it's got to be Miracle Whip. Thanks for this discussion.
