What compelled them?

On 31.08.12, in our city of joy, Calcutta, an octogenarian lady and her two unwed daughters drove half a kilometer from home in their grey Maruti Zen in search of a high-rise and leapt to their death from more a more than 350-foot-high terrace at South City, carrying out a suicide pact that has left police puzzled. Of the three, Mukuta Mukherji, 47, was a prominent environment activist, a former journalist and a trained pilot. The other two were her mother, Anita Mukherji, 81 and Kheya Mukherji, 35. The daughters lost their father on 29.08.12 and within hours of his cremation, took the decision to jump to death. They left behind a five-page note in Bengali, addressed to the vice-chancellor of Rabindra Bharati University, stating that their property in cash and assets had been donated to the University for Tagore studies and under no circumstances their property should go the family’s relatives even if they claimed. Investigators found out that Mukuta with her sister met the vice-chancellor of Rabindra Bharati University on 23rd August to discuss how they could donate their family property to the institution. Investigators have also found out that Mukuta had enquired from some people she knew about high rises in Calcutta. This means that it was a preplanned suicide. But what compelled them to take such a drastic decision? They belong to a well to do family. So poverty is not the cause behind. Their father was aged enough, so his death was not unexpected. Then was it due to a feeling of insecurity as the daughters were unmarried or was it due to lack of faith in people? Can you guess anything?

It must have been quite an emotional loss for these three to lose this man. Maybe they felt they would go join him. It is really hard to say why people do these things. Like you said this was all preplanned so I think they felt they would go to be with him. I really do.
