Just recently my 3 years old laptop a little bit old now has a problem it takes too long to start up. After logging in on the start up page it takes about 10 to 15 minutes after seeing the windows and loading all the desktop. After that it seems nothing happened it runs normal as it used to be no error found even no virus since I have a strong anti-virus. Anyone have the same problems before? Do I have to reformat my laptop?

Try to perform the de-fragmentation it first my dear. Sometimes spaces between files has to do with the slow process. just try to defrag hope it may help before you done the reformatting.

Most of the obvious approaches have already been covered by previous responders so far. Derek_a makes a good point and running msconfig to close programs at startup will reduce the problem because these programs are using system resources even if you do not use the programs at the time. I would also check the hard drive space remaining and remove programs that you do not use at all. If you laptop is only 3 years old then you should have a restoration system supplied by the manufacturer. This could be a CD, but more likely is a small program on the computer to restore factory settings. If you are comfortable doing this then I would suggest resetting the laptop to the state it was when you bought it, it will remove all unwanted junk. You would then have to configure your internet setting and email etcetera again, and re install all programs that you have added. This is a laborious process but will put your laptop into the same condition as the day that you bought it. personally, I would do this and when everything is back to how you want it, create a backup with a third party program such as Acronis so that you can restore everything quickly in future.

It does not matter which version of Windows you are using, the system is the same. Look through the programs installed on your laptop and try to find one that was placed there by the manufacturer to restore the system. If the program has been removed then the image may still exist, it is usually a Non DOS partition on the hard drive. However, it could be difficult to access it without a CD or program.

thanks, but did you know how to restore factory setting in windows vista?

The best option is to upgrade to windows 7 or windows 8 , if you are running genuine version of windows OS then microsoft will upgrade it for free as I expect your OS is not more than 2 year old in your pc.

My laptop had ants crawling out of it a few weeks back. When I got back from the province it won't run anymore and it's making some strange noise.

They first invaded the adaptor so I doubt it's food particles that got stuck in the laptop that attracted them to it. I was thinking of opening it to clean it up but it looks like it's too late because now it sounds like there are some loose parts inside that makes noise when I shake it.

Maybe your eating in front of your laptop while working some food particles drop that's why ants are encourage to crawl on your keyboard. Maybe ants also are having a nest inside your laptop, it is better to open it and cleaned it.

Wow it sounds like it is not only ants who invaded your laptop a big bugs like cockroach or spiders that loosen the particle.

Do you have alot of things on it like anti-virus, updates, etc. that come up when you start it up? If you do I would get rid of some. They will slow down your computer. Do you do a maintenance on your computer often? Like cleaning your cookies and such? Also doing a disk cleanup and cleaning up your event viewer. All these things will make your computer work faster. Ten to fifteen minutes is a rediculous amount of time.

I do always the maintenance one thing that I will do is to clear my event viewer. Is it safe to clear all the things on the event viewer?

Better check your disk space capacity.. check unnecessary files.. remove which are not needed..Apply some checkdisk and defragmentation task on your laptop. This is just a simple maintenance check or you can ask computer experts for recommendation.

I hate a slow computer...mine is still fast but its not quite a year old. Have you defragged? Eliminated the temp files? that might help a bit. I am not a computer expert so I don't know if you have to reformat it....

While I'm using it it runs normal it doesn't run slow only at start up which loads so slow before the windows starts. I already do the defrag and delete all the unnecessary files and I hope it will works.

The best thing to do is to have it reformatted. That is what I did to my laptop after a year of using it. You might want to try deleting apps that you do not really use as well as delete files, too.

Thanks for posting this discussion. Well i can understand your problem and u must be very much tensed looking at problem. Even i had the same problem with my laptop some years before and i was advised by my friend to reformat the laptop so that it will get rid of all the virus even if they are present in my laptop. There are very strong viruses that can enter your system even when u are having an anti virus. What say?

My Toshiba netbook which is about...almost the same old as your laptop used to have this problem. Wht I did is to debug it, remove some useless programs, update my anti-virus and disable the old ones that has expired and keeps on prompting to be renewed. After that, it is no longer a problem and it boots faster. I am not really an expert on computers and hardware, but just sharing what I've done to deal with the same problem I used to have. Hope this helps.

I more thing I want to suggest you that this problem may occur because of your antivirus sometime (like if you are using Norton antivirus). So, if you have genuine version of windows OS running on your pc then please switch to Microsoft Security Essential one the best and free antivirus and you will never feel your pc get slow. Also your system gets protected and have the power of Microsoft. But condition is you have Licensed version of Microsoft Windows OS otherwise it will not work....

I'm not using norton I'm running genuine version of OS Vista and I'm using AVG since then even in my old laptop I'm suit with this anti virus it can easily detect and cure viruses. But I will try the one that you said.

Did you do any defragment over the 3 years ? have you changed your OS since then ? How many ram and what motherboard are you using. If you are using Windows 7 or 8 , then the bare minimum is 2 GB of Ram plus anti virus usually take up a lot of memory it would slow down your computer dramatically. If you suspect something wrong like virus, you might wanna do a netstat to see if any werid ports is opened without your acknowledgement.

The defragment has set to automatic every week and sometimes I do the manual too. I still did not yet change the OS It's still running on windows vista. I don't suspect any virus since when I'm using it I did not get any problem still running smooth when it is already start. Only the problem is the loading before the windows show when I turn it on.

@lynboobsy If your problem is at start up, better clean up your start up because there must be to many unnecessary start up programs loading in the background. Try to use "disk cleanup", you can download it free from the internet, it will clean your computer of junks and unnecessary files that accumulate there for 3 years.

Computers get bogged down with the stuff we put on them. You can always run a defragment program and get rid of some junk that is slowing your laptop down. Virus only make it run slower because they are holding up your programs, check your hard drive and see if there is anything you can transfer to an external hard drive. Sometimes new software requires lot of megabytes and older computers need all they can get to run the newest versions.

The first thing that you will want to check is to make sure that the hard drive on your laptop is not starting to go bad. If it isn't then I know that the thing that we've had to do with our computers a few times is to reinstall our operating system. It is definitely not something that is pleasant to do, but I would much rather take the time to reinstall my operating system than to have to pack it all in and go to buy a new computer.

So far the defrag works and I hope it is the only reason for being slow on start up.
• Philippines
21 Oct 12
Well, maybe the laptop parts are not that efficient anymore in transmitting data. Also, the memory should be low by now. I have my laptop still standing for more than 5 years already. When things starts to get slow, I usually back up my files on a storage device and re format my laptop and it works great back again. Maybe clearing some unnecessary files with the formatting. Also, do you defrag your computer? I am just doing that just now.

You must format your laptop and reinstall the OS. Some times if the C drive has less amount of free space this type of problem can occur. Try disabling the startup programs with Tuneup, this will surely help u...
