My daughter is having her first field trip of this school year tomorrow. The fourth grade class at her school are having and overnight trip to the local 4H camp where they are going to be doing a lot of different science experiences. She is so very excited about it because it is her first overnight field trip and also because of the fact that she really enjoys science.
Did you get to take field trips when you were in school? Did you have a favorite field trip that you still think about with fondness today?
For me, my most memorable field trip was when I was in eighth grade and we went for four days to Chicago, Illinois. I really enjoyed it because we got to see and do so many different things and it was a lot of fun to get to spend a lot of quality time with my classmates.

Wow, that's great for your daughter. I never experienced any good science field trips for that matter. But I used to love field trips as well when I was in elementary. However when I was in high school I just became lazy going somewhere and not really learning a lot from it. Haha. I remember my first overnight trip, well not really a field trip, but a girl scout camp. We went camping every year for 3 consecutive years, and those became memorable experiences for me. I remember being given the title of the Girl Scout of the year when I was in my 5th grade, if I'm not mistaken. And I agree with you that it's so much fun having to spend a lot of time with classmates. It was a good time to know each other more because of those trips.

My most memorable field trip in high school was actually just across town. We had the opportunity to tour the University medical school. It was really cool to me because I had wanted to be a doctor when I grew up. The thing that I loved so much about that trip was getting to go through the cadaver lab.

I get dizzy and vomit whenever I run the bus so I don't really join field trips when I was a kid. But when I was already working, I needed to join our team building activity and for me, it is more like a field trip as well. But I did not ride the bus, some of my colleagues and I rented a van. We went to Baguio and stayed there for three days. I like the sceneries and I did enjoy it because I love taking photos. I also enjoy the climate as it is cold in there, they don't even used air conditioner in their mall. We also went to strawberry farm and I enjoyed it so much. We also got the chance to have some photos taken wearing their native costumes. I enjoyed it so much especially I am with my colleagues that are both good friends of mine.

I've never had the chance to take any kinds of trips when I was working. But I do kind of understand what you are talking about because most of our vacations when I was growing up were business trips for my father (he just took us along for the trip). The most memorable of those for me was when we went to Virginia Beach when I was about nine years old.

The first field trip that I can remember, is being in the third or fourth grade. We went to the local cotton gin and watched how the reaped the field and then watched the process of removing the cotton from it's seed and get washed. It was fun. The one that I remember best, is my junior year in high school. The choir class went to Disneyland. I had fun hanging out with my friends.
Of course the ultimate field trips have been the ones I've gotten to go on with my kids. Memories that will last a lifetime for me. :)

I've enjoyed getting to go on field trips with my children as well. I would have loved to have been able to go to camp with Kathryn last week, but it wouldn't have left anyone at home to pick Paul up after school since Daddy was still at work.
Now if Kat was an only child, there is nothing that would have kept me from going on that trip.

There was a lot in Chicago. We had the opportunity to go to the Brookfield Zoo, the art museum, the museum of natural history, the Sears Tower. We also did some things that were more fun as well. We went to Hard Rock Cafe and the mall too.
I think that the reason that I really enjoyed that trip is because of the people I went with and that we all just had a good time.

I really do believe that field trips are a great learning experience. They are something that really does give children an opportunity to make their learning hands on.

That is a great opportunity for your daughter! I hope she has fun! :)
The middle school I went to took all the 6th graders every year to a 4H camp ground about an hour away. The trip lasted 4 days (Tuesday through Friday) and was an excellent experience. We did many nature-focussed science experiments, went hiking along the various trails in the surrounding woods, and for many of the students it was the first over-night field trip.
As an adult I have volunteered at many elementary and middle schools, and my favorite field trip was one I went on as an adult volunteer. The schools in Pinellas County, Florida regularly take full-day field trips to a place called "Enterprise Village" where the children learn valuable work skills (they each get a "job" in the village), learn to balance an account and write checks (as payment for their job, and in spending money around the village, and generally have a great time. I went two years in a row, both times with 5th graders. The organization that runs Enterprise Village has a program for 5th graders, and a program for 8th graders that focus on different levels of complexity in terms of money earning, management, and using banking systems. I think it is an excellent program, and loved volunteering for this field trip even though it was a lot of work!

Enterprise Village sounds wonderful. I wish that there would have been something like that for me when I was a younger girl and I wish that there was something like that here for my children as they get a little bit older.
You see, I don't think that children are taught nearly enough financial responsibility in their lives.

Back when I was growing up the biggest field trip we took was to the state capitol....but we had band trips for marching band and once in a while we got to stay in a hotel...and that was fun. My youngest daughter went to summer science for four years..kind of like what your daughter is going to except they went way up to northern minnesota and into the boundry waters for six weeks in the summer....it was an awesome program that she loved!

The program that you are talking about that your daughter got to go to sounds like something that would be a lot of fun and something that would have been right up my alley. As my children get a little bit older, I will always try to keep my eyes open for enrichment opportunities like this for them.

my first field trip happened when i was in high school. having a trip with one's classmates is always fun. it is always challenging though for teachers to keep te students in sight and still. the playground has expanded inside the bus and field sites. field trips are one of those activities that is still vivid in my mind.

I think that having field trips is something that really does enrich our learning. Now I was in sixth grade before I had the opportunity to have an overnight trip, but I can tell that Kathryn really enjoyed her trip and did learn a lot during the trip.

It is good that the children of today are still able to go on field trips because I know that this is something that I enjoyed when I was at school. I remember going to a museum when I was at school and I was completely amazed at all of the things that I was able to see. We all went on a coach and the coach journey was even more fun the day out itself. We also went to the cinema once to see a film about Egypt and I found that this was something that was both educational and fun all at the same time which was a great thing.

At the school that my children go to, they get to have at least one field trip every year. This was a biggie because it was an overnight trip, but my kindergartener also had his first field trip this month as well. Their trip was to a local pumpkin patch where they got to learn all about the life cycle of a pumpkin.

I am sure your daughter will enjoy her first overnight field trip.
I have only joint my Christian Fellowship camp and it is really
enriching. I got to meet many new faces from other districts and we
became friends. We used to write letters to each others. It is really
fun and the activities were really interesting. Yes, I still have it
fresh in my memory, and will treasure it forever.

She did have a great time. She came home on Friday so excited about all of the different things that they did on their trip. It sounded like a lot of fun and I really wish in retrospect that my schedule would have allowed me to have gone on the trip as a chaperone.

How neat for your daughter! My daughter hasn't had a sleep over field trip yet (she's in 2nd grade) - but I know they have that with the older grades. And how are you feeling as a parent with your daughter going on her first sleep over field trip? I ask because some of my friends posted that as their status report on Facebook . . . they were happy for their child but nervous at the same time. But in the end their kids always had a blast on their field trips. Back in my time, we never had sleep over field trips. But we did go on yearly field trips to local places. My most memorable trip has to be the one I had in 10th grade. The biology classes went on an ocean boat trip (only for the day). I remember boasting I never got sea sick (because I never did previously), so I didn't take any sea sick prevention medicine. I ended up getting VERY sick that I was amongst a handful of other fellow students who laid up inside somewhere. I remember the boat was rocking a lot - I looked over to the side, and I saw sky, wave, sky, wave, sky, wave . . . oh, it was terrible. This guy I knew who liked me witnessed me almost throwing up over the edge of the boat - that was entirely embarrassing. Not a good memory, but definitely memorable!!!

As far as how I felt about it. I was a little bit nervous because there was a chance that something could have happened to her. However, I wasn't as worried as some parents would be because she's had sleepovers with friends and family members from the time that she was tiny. In fact, my in-laws insisted that she have her first sleepover with them when she was only two weeks old.
