If you are a boss, will you offer the employees who are smoking a break?

I just wonder if you are a boss, will you give the break for the smoking employees to smoke? If yes, it seems it is not fair because the non-smoking employees don't have this break because they have to work in the office. But the smoking employees can go out to enjoy their cigarettes for a while.

I believe I would have all breaks the same and if one smokes they must do it then. It is their habit they have to control it. rules are the same regardless. or if they really had to smoke and no control then they do not get paid for smoking time that is not the normal break.. no work no pay..

Exactly! All the breaks the same. If smoking is permitted in a designated area, then fine. But if it isn't allowed they must leave their addiction home and not bring it to work.

Where I work if you work 8 hours you get two 10 minute paid breaks and then a 30 minute unpaid break. That is for all employees so for us no other employee gets any thing different from the other. I figure as long as they do not take more than there allotted time for breaks then it does not bother me at all. If you don't smoke and want to take the break then get up and go and get a cup of coffee or go to the bathroom or get a drink that is what I do then its like I am getting a break too. I have even told my boss that I am going out for a smoke break even when I did not smoke I just went out to get out of the office. Just because you do not smoke does not mean that you cant go out for a smoke break every once in a while. I would just tell the boss your going out for a fresh air break.

Our employees get two fifteen minute breaks that is paid and an hour of unpaid break. They are all encourage to take them regardless if they smoke or not to lessen the stress of our employees. It is up to them what they'll spend those breaks on. The management doesn't impose a ban on smoking neither is it encouraged.

Yeah the building where our company is leasing even has its own smoking floor. Many of my employees smoke but there are some who don't. Instead of a yosi breaks, they take coffee breaks.

The last job I had in an office gave everyone two 10-minute breaks every day. The smokers could go outside and smoke and the non-smokers could do anything they wanted during that time. I think this is the only fair solution. I used to smoke so I did appreciate the breaks but there were some who did not smoke when I did and they would come outside just to take their break and talk with friends who smoked. Now that I am a non-smoker, I can appreciate both sides of this issue. If I were a boss, I would give everyone the same thing, a 10-minute break to do whatever they wanted.

Sometimes the smokers just go out to smoke when they feel like smoking and this is not good.

They would get fired if they did that here. Unauthorized breaks are grounds for dismissal. The breaks we were given (aside from our lunch break) did not legally have to be given to us by our employers so we all appreciated them and never tried to take advantage of our employer by taking any unauthorized breaks. Going outside to smoke whenever they feel like it is costing the employer money and they should not put up with it. If I were an employer, I'd give everyone the two breaks per day plus the lunch break and, if anyone abused that by taking unauthorized breaks, I'd first give them a warning to stop those breaks, then if they continued doing it I'd have no trouble firing them.

Smokers may have their break for smoking during coffee breaks in fairness to those who don't smoke. They can do that.

Smokers don't get special privileges. Everyone employed should get a 30 minute lunch break and two 15 minute breaks. What they do on their breaks is their business. There would be no smoking in the building, and might not be any smoking allowed on the premises. If people want to smoke they can do it in their cars or at their homes. Having worked in health related industries, smoking us not permitted anywhere on the property. Nothing is worse than the cloud of smoke that surrounds them. Since I worked in a smoke free environment, we could always tell when someone sneaked off to burn one. It reeked.

You know, its funny. A break is a break, if somebody wants to smoke on theirs or if they want to stay at their desk, it wouldn't matter to me as long as they are getting their work done while they are at work. I used to hang out with the smokers, even though I don't smoke, they took more breaks and I wasn't about to do their work so I went on break with them, they didn't care and they seemed more relaxed anyway. It used to stress me out but after a while I didn't give a crap like they didn't.

People's work is not handed out equally. If some people can't finish them on time, you may have to do it or help to do it instead. So it sounds unfair because those smokers smoke rather than working.

Extra paid breaks for any segment of the work force is unfair to the others. I don't care if it's for smoking, drinking peeing or praying. Why should they get more paid time of than others. The only exceptions should be medical. An then their work hours, other break time or pay check should be adjusted to reflect hours worked.

Quitting smoking isn't that easy. It's the hardest thing I have ever done. Even with quit smoking programs, many fail. Also not everyone wants to quit.

At the hospital where I worked in the past there were many discussions about this topic. They smokers were not allowed to smoke in the rooms where we worked, they had to leave the ward when they wanted to smoke and they did that several times during the day. The non-smokers didn't get those extra breaks and they were not satisfied with that. I am a non-smoker so I was one of the people who had to stay and work while they others left the ward in order smoke outside. I found it annoying that the rules weren't the same for smokers and non-smokers. If I was employer I would plan breaks for everyone not just the smokers.

If there's any such break in my office, I won't do work because I will take my break too but I won't spend it on smoking but rather mylotting hahaha or coffee..ing. Most employees would not agree with if only smokers could do a break and the non smokers won't. Such things would probably would end me up talking to the boss or writing a letter to the boss boss about it. There should be fair treatment among employees because all of them works for the company just in different positions and job description.

Youless, all my ex-companies that i ever worked for never gives any break for their employees to smoke. My ex-bosses always reminded their employees to break from smoking while working. Most of the time, it is the employees who are hiding and smoking in the toilet before they came out and continue with their jobs. It makes the toilet areas smell stinks and we always complained this matter to the boss. Nowadays, boss asked all those smokers to smoke early in the morning, before begin their works. And smoke during lunch break time, not to stink the toilet anymore. But, i never see any of my bosses allow a break for their smokers staffs, since they are very calculative about working hours.

i also don't like smoking. but ifever i am the boss, i would give those smokers time for smoking. it's in them already, so to be fair with them as well i think a few minutes wouldn't hurt much. but i would also give the same time to those non-smokers. for example if the smoking break is about ten minutes, then i'd allow non smokers to also have as much minutes for whatever they need to do.

well, you could say that. it's just that being the boss, you have to be fair to your subordinates whether you like them or not. chances are, they are already in the boundaries of not liking you. but if they see you treat them all equally then they might respect you even more.

hi youless, most business have to offer breaks times during a day, its the state law in some places...So every employee have the right to use that break in any way they want to... A break for one should be a break for all...of course not at the same time...it all depends on your establishment and their rules....

Smokers should not be given any break for smoking. Smokers may create a decent excuse of going to a short break for smoking. I think employees should have the habht of not smoking during office hour.

Every one is allowed a break, whether you smoke or not. When I was a boss, yes, I took smoke breaks, but I also allowed my non-smoking employees to take breaks also. You should be given a break even if you're a non-smoker, if nothing else to just get up and move around.

Has anyone ever asked your boss why he doesn't allow the non-smokers to have break? Maybe report it into the labor board department or file a complaint to the corporate office. That just seems unfair even from a smoker's point of view that non-smokers don't get a break.

Personally sometimes I have wondered about this one, because if I was a smoker I know I would want the extra breaks if given one. So personally I think often times it would depend on where you worked, and if there was a time that would be more OK than their regular breaks. Because in some jobs allowing extra ones is not really favored while others it would not matter especially when it is slow.

i dont think there is a specific task breaktimes were given to. I mean it should be according to the employees on how they can maximizetheir time when it comes to taking breaks. Like for me i do not smoke but i take breaks and get off my desk for a time to buy some food or to do something like take a walk.

Why should I give time off for their addiction? Is it fair for the non-smoking employees? If given time off to the smokers then the non-smoking employees will demand time-off for them as well. There are usually three breaks- morning break, lunch break and afternoon break. They can smoke during breaks time at the smoking zones. When recruiting employees, I will make sure that they are non-smokers first before I employ them.

i think no. It would be unfair to non smoking employees. Also, i am not in favor of smoking as this affects not only the smokers but harms more the persons around them who inhales the smoke they produced. Hence if they are constrained to abstain from this vices while in the office it would also be for their own benefit.
