Bothersome flies

It's only 30 some degrees here and you would think that the cold would have killed off all the flies? No, because they're apparently all inside!
They are so bothersome when they're flying and buzzing around your face and ears. Then when I get the fly swatter out they magically disappear!

We had that going on a couple of weeks ago. It was a pain. Now they are mostly gone, but it is true, they recognize a fly swatter when they see one.

Then of course there is the home remedy that says to hang plastic bags full of water with a shiny penny in it as the shiny discourages the flies. I never tried that. It supposedly repels flies to grow basil by your back door.

I read somewhere, some time ago, that flies don't see red... That's why the really good fly swatters are red.

So, I guess maybe the flies are smarter that we are!
But never fear the flyswatter is here and we even have the old fashioned fly swatters with the wire handle and not all plastic.

Maybe it's because it's warmer inside than outside? They seem to be slower though in the cold so they're easier to catch.

I hate those flies that come in this time of year. They're like Frankenflies.

I had a fly hatch somewhere in the house a couple of weeks ago. I couldn't find the source. I kept killing flies, about 2-3 per day using a spray insecticide and various near-at-hand items to swat. I went through the house several times trying to find where they had originated. Finally, after I'd gotten all of them, I found an acorn squash that I had forgotten about on the back part of a kitchen table that was deteriorating. It was dry by then but I figured that was the source.
I don't know how the flies recognize the swatter, maybe by smell. I understand that they have an amazing sense of smell. Even when I had the can of spray in hand, they would disappear. I have learned to check the window area in each room. They like to head for the bright light for some reason. So I sprayed down the window areas and the area in the bathroom around the litter box. They're all gone now, but I was chasing flies there for several days.

That's a good idea, I want to rearrange anyway and when I'm cleaning I might be able to find the source. Since it's been cold here we've been winterizing and putting plastic on the windows,so I don't think that could the source for them coming in.

LOL sounds like you need to walk with that swatter like an
attachment on your body/belt..flies are very annoying in the
summer and I can imagine how annoying they are in cold weather.
as well at any time...
Good luck with getting rid of them....

Thanks for the comment! I've been going around with the fly swatter in my hand searching for the critters.

I still get these teeny tiny ones in the outside plants here (herbs like catnip and the lemon mint) that I'm trying to shoo away cause I wanna bring them inside but not if they are infested with those white flies. I tried to get rid of them but they come back. It is quite annoying as the sun isn't out alot anymore and the weather still gets cold up and down now and then. We've even had frost once or twice.

I know what you mean, we've even had snow a couple of times this month already. Both times however it was warm enough to melt the snow pretty much within hours. Maybe we need a good freeze (if freezing can be called good!)

We have been having that issue here, too. I would have thought that their numbers would have drastically dwindled by now, but they still are in just about every place I go as well as in our home.
We're overnighting in a hotel here as a precaution in the face of Sandy's wrath-- since the place where we've been living isn't a great place to ride out high winds--and there is even a fly in here!

Just joined in a discussion and was hoping that all our myLot friends that are in the area of Sandy are safe and keep us posted! Glad to hear from you!
It's just some crazy weather for crazy flies!

Used to have a massive problem with flies in one of our homes in the past. It had a lot to do with the local farmers liquefying manure and spreading it on the fields without digging it in. (I oppose that practice by the way). We started raising Muscovy ducks and had a great spring flock of over thirty ducklings. They gobbled up every fly and mosquito in sight. I was impressed. Other ducks help but Muscovies are just incredible for that.

How interesting!
Did you have any idea that the Muscovy ducks ate flies before hand? I know that spider webs are suppose to keep the flies down, apparently don't have enough spider webs.

Thats funny. I have them here because the next door people kill chickens 3 o r 4 times a week. They put the kill part sin bags and someone picks it up every 3 4 days after. But somehow the flies get to them. And they are all over here. I hate them flies.

The only thing that I can think of that would be attracting flies would be that the next door neighbor has several dog that are outside all the time. Or maybe because the dumpster is close by. Still you would think they flies would be freezing?
