Ideas to make a little money go a long way

This year we really don't have a lot of money to spend on Christmas. This got me to thinking, are there any suggestions that other mylotters can make which will help to make a little bit of money go a long way with Christmas shopping. For me I try to earn as many Amazon gift cards as I can through various sites and I do a lot of my Christmas shopping on Amazon (this is essentially free shopping and their prices tend to be more reasonable than the stores in my area). I have also been trying to save the money that I've been making online so that I can use some of that for my other Christmas shopping that I need to do. Additionally, I try to make purchases on items that are on sale. What suggestions can you offer to me and to other mylotters that are really trying to stretch a buck to make their Christmas shopping a little bit easier on their wallets?

Hi! For me when I need to make money stretch a bit further, I find myself relying on myself; baking and just being better with the coupons. If you are careful, you can go to some stores on certain days to double on the coupons or perhaps get a buy 1 get 1 free deal (if not both). Just be careful and only get what is really needed and what will be used. It may take a while but the savings do add up. The other thing you can do is perhaps bake for a few people. Do they have any preferences that you could accomadate just by making a few changes? Can you do a few recipes reliably that don't cost much? Many do prefer a gift from the heart as it matters and it's always something you can build on if you really enjoy baking or something else you can do with your hands. Best of luck!

I am definitely more of a crafter than I am a baker and I am planning on making something this year for both my mother and my mother-in-law. This is something that will save a little bit of money and also something that I know both of them will appreciate. And in day to day living, using coupons and pairing them with sales is a great way to save a lot of money. I try to do this all the time as a part of my life style.

These ideas are all great ideas and have given me the opportunity to re-evaluate things and I'll be taking a slightly different path for Christmas this year than I've done in the past.

Do presents have to be brand new? They can be second hand and still be in great condition and look brand new. How about hitting yard sales, estate sales, second hand stores, thrift stores and consignment shops? Try dollar stores. Try having your own yard sale so that you can raise a little money for Xmas. You might not make a lot but you might make enough to cover Xmas. I know that you have some financial problems from some of your previous postings. You may be able to get some Xmas assistance for your immediate family from one of your local social service agencies, outreach agencies and non-profits. In Austin, we have the Christmas Bureau, Brown Santa and Blue Santa among other agencies. How creative are you? Can you make things? How about cooking or baking? Can you bake for others? I think that homemade food and baked goods is always appreciated.

Unfortunately I'm not a person that is really able to bake, my mother has always been the one in our family that does that. However, I do know how to make a lot of different crafts and I will be making a calendar for my mother-in-law again this year (I would do the same thing for my mother, but I know my brother and sister-in-law would be upset that their daughters were not included in the calendar). As far as Christmas assistance here goes, you have to actually be on food stamps in order to qualify for those programs and that is something that we don't qualify for.

I agree with others that making at least some of the gifts is a good way to go. Most people possess talents that can easily translate into nice gifts for recipients. I would suggest taking a look at sites such as Pinterest and Gojee (food and beverages) for inspiration. Another idea is to hit a book sale (even better if it is to support a good cause!) and pick up some good books. Recently, I was at a book sale where I found a copy of A Wrinkle in Time with the same cover as the copy of the book that I first read; I was thrilled with the find. Something like that can really make a person happy--especially if the person is a bibliophile like me. Of course, a book sale or used book store is also a great way to help build up a kid's personal library; for a few dollars, you could easily have a dozen or more children's books--possibly in like new condition. You could take a look at sites such as Etsy for fun, low cost gifts. There is also the site Listia where you can use credits instead of cash to get things.

Unfortunately I haven't had a lot of luck with Listia in the past but it is something that I'm going to be looking into again. As far as making gifts goes, I do want to make something for my mother, but I'm not sure what. My mother-in-law really loved the calendar that I made for her last year of pictures of the children throughout the year so I'm going to be making another one of those for her to use throughout 2013.

Thanks for sharing in details, we must spend money wisely. I am hindu, christmas is not our festival, but i have christian friends here in city and abroad, i will give gifts to them. Our recent festival was Dussehera, i gave gifts to my relatives and family members worth 30,000 rupees. The next one coming is Diwali; i will be giving gifts again; i know all my pension money will go; but i will do this.

For me, one of the things that I really like about the gift-giving holidays is the fact that it makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside to see the looks of joy on someone's face when they open up a gift that is something that they really wanted. I could care less if anyone gave me a gift as long as those that I give gifts to are happy with what they receive.

We are don't have that much money for this Christmas this year at all. So we are going with getting everyone 1 gift for this Christmas. I would like to buy more things. But my bank account has the ablitly to save change and put it in to my saving account so I can try to have some extra money to get something extra for the kids if I can. Trying to also buy things off of Amazon and finding coupons and sales to get discount.

For me, I'm not getting as much for other people as I have in the past so that I am still able to do for my children and for my nieces. I know that the adults will be able to understand that there isn't a lot of money, but this is something that is a little bit harder for younger children to understand. Of course I've been able to buy a lot on Amazon just with the gift cards that I've earned from them through Swagbucks and some other sites.

Well there is always the good old tradition of planning a good Black Friday shopping strategy. If I had kids especially I'd be out there in the cold with all the loney tunes for those hot deals. Also don't forget the other even that has started in the last few years Cyber Monday. Amazon had some pretty great deals last year. Also I've brought several things off ebay in the past. I wouldn't purchase just anything on there (like for example there are a lot of pirated movies of poor quality and cheap knock offs) but for certain things you get find some really great deals.

Oh yes, there is no way that I wouldn't be out shopping on Black Friday. I might not be buying a lot but there is always at least one or two things that I'd been planning on getting that will be on sale on Black Friday.

make as many gifts as you can. there are tons of ideas out there even for the non crafty! there are so many great recipes for foods in a jar, food like soups mixes, cookie mixes and i have even seen pie in a jar (on pintrest). i saw another idea that i really like and it was comfort in a jar. you could put lip balm, warm socks or gloves, some hot chocolate packets; well, you get the idea, all in a jar. these ideas will not help you make money but will possibly stretch it farther!

Do you give big or little gifts...are these for family or friends...? I make little things for everyone in my family...I give gift cards to my own kids and grandkids but a little something for everyone. Making a few of them does save money.

I mostly try to concentrate on the children for Christmas. This means my two children and then something for each of my three nieces as well. With my children, I like to get them a couple of bigger things and then some smaller things as well. What I mostly want to get for them (they will be 10 and 6 by Christmas) is a Furby and a new bicycle. Well, I have a $50 Wal-Mart card coming and I will get another $25 plus my existing balance in my Amazon account that will get the two Furbies. As far as the bicycles go, I will get $50 into my paypal in Novemeber which should get one and I need to come up with some money for the other one. For those that aren't children in our family, they will be getting smaller gifts or something that I can make myself this year because of our financial situation.

I have had alot of money problems this year here. Ive learned to go to the local swap meet here. People think swap meets are old items. But her ein Mexico they sell mostly new items there. And most are alot cheaper than at the store. Ive saved alot of money this way. So I will have a few extra bucks to spend on xmas this year. have a great day there.

That is a great idea. We really don't have any swap meets or flea markets in our area, but I do know from past experience that they are a great way to save a little bit of money.

Every couple of months or so, I clean out closets and the kids' rooms, and the house in general, and if I haven't used or need items in the past couple months or so, I sell it on Ebay. another thing I do, is look around at flea markets, yard sales, and second-hand stores to find items to sell. You'd be amazed at how much extra money you can get from either stuff of your own you consider to be junk, or at a second-hand store. One man's junk is another man's treasure! lol

I have been known to sell things that I no longer need either on ebay or on Craig's List as a way of making a little bit of extra money. However, I have to admit that I've never been one to look for things at garage sales that I would be able to turn a profit on.
