Can Chelsea maintain their lead at the top of the EPL?

Notwithstanding last night's irrelevant but epic Capitol One cup game, Man Utd knocked a dent in Chelsea's title aspirations with Sunday's 3-2 victory. The Blues bounced back last night but with weakened teams that suggest it was a low priority match. Do you think Chelsea can pick themselves up and keep their lead at the top of the EPL? Man Utd have won many titles by beating all the weaker teams but coming unstuck against their closest rivals, while the latter have performed well against United but dropped points against the weaker teams. After all, 3 points is all you get whether you beat Southampton or Man Utd. It's a numbers game.Have Chelsea become the new Man Utd from this point of view?

I think Manchester United's win with Chelsea has just thrown the EPL title race open. Now this cuts Chelsea's lead at the top to 1 point. But next week Man U play against Arsenal and depending on the winner there could be more realignment at the top. With all the top 4 teams showing signs of defensive frailities, it is going to be a very close race to the finish. On the offensive side, Chelsea, Man U and Man City seem to have the personnel to score a lot of goals. Arsenal currently seem to be lacking on that front. Cheers! Ram

I agree Ram - it makes things more interesting! The question is if Chelsea can maintain their consistency in beating the lesser teams. I think that man United will get stronger as time passes. I see them as the main threat, rather than City. Thanks for sharing!

Yes, Man United is traditionally stronger in the post Christmas season. But so far Chelsea has been clinical with the lesser teams. So I think this is going to be an interesting title race. Cheers! Ram

This period is where Chelsea will suffer a dip in form. Will the trend continue? No one knows. With both Manchester club just a point behind, any slip and they will lose the top position.

Yes, I think Chelsea are under external pressure too that they could do without (Clattenbergate!). I also think that John Terry is a ticking timebomb who will explode when decisions and opposing fans chants go against/get to him. This will be a real test of their character which they showed in abundance when shocking everyone to lift the Champions League title. I think they will miss the presence of Drogba during such times.

A very important fact is that Chelsea used a lot of important players in the League Cup against Man Utd while Man Utd only used substitutes. The energy of players is quite indispensable for a league like the England one. Swansea is not a bad team. They only lost to Man City because of their bad luck for 1 goal. It would be possible for Swansea to win Chelsea! But Man Utd would not easily win Arsenal. I believe that Giroud is getting better.
