There are a lot of ways to save money...of course there's the obvious..don't eat out, no vacation trips, car pool, etc. But what are some of the more subtle or simple ways to save?

Put 20% of your earnings as savings. That's only me.

use your library to the full extent. most have so many things that you can borrow and my library subscribes to Zinio and now i can read magazines for free! some librarys even offer classes or courses in a lot of areas and often for free.

What a great idea! I know others have said something similar. I hadn't thought about the classes but I do know you can access the internet there for free or for very little, less than it would actually cost you a month.

We have a huge house, but we do not heat and cool it all all of the time. We are not using the heat upstairs at all, and that is where we sleep. We find we are healthier if we sleep a little cooler, and then we also have heated mattress pads on the bed so we do stay warm enough without cranking up the furnace. Cook in the crockpot or use small appliances in the winter. Use your grill in the summer, cuts down on using the oven and stove.

When you are out shopping and you find a sign that says that its on sale.. Dont always believe it.. At one of my local stores the normal price is 88 cents.. But then every once and a while they will throw up a sign that says 10 for 10.. In reality your spending 12 cents more.. Granted this may be a small amount but its happens on other products sometimes.. If something is on sale and its legit.. Instead of just buying for the week or biweek or month.. Buy a little more.. Especially if it an staple in your house.. It does two things; one you have extra just in case, and you save x amount when you get it all of the time.. When you cook and you find that you have leftovers.. which most people do not like eating right away and normally just goes to waste.. Get some ziplock baggies or containers that you can use and then freeze it.. There is two benefits here; one you dont waste food, and you have a fast meal for one of those nights that you are not really in the mood to cook.. When you are out and about always keep your eye on the gas prices.. I am not sure if you live in a big city or a little town.. Here there are Road Rangers and you can get a card like you do for a grocery store, you have that card scaned when you get gas and save 3 cents per gallon of gas.. Can add up quick.. Here is another one that lots of people seem to forget.. If you are leaving a room or the house.. Turn everything off.. It makes a big difference.. I lived with my parents for a bit.. And even through there were twice as many people living there I was able to cut their bill in half.. If you are in an area of the country that gets really cold during the winter; put plastic over your windows on the inside and out; if you are able to.. This help keep the cold out and the warm in.. Unless you have newer windows like the last five years.. Then you would just be wasting time and money.. Get rid of cable; just watch DVDs or VHS.. listen to the radio.. etc Not sure if you have it or not. (assuming you do for this) Without cable you can get more done around the house etc.. and save quite a bit.. Its nice to have but not needed.. Cut out other things that are more pleasure then need.. But do it slowly unless your in big trouble with your finances already.. The reason I say slow; then you will be able to adjust better and not be so hard on yourself later.. There are probly more ways just can not think of more right now.. My auntie taught me a lot of ways to take a penny and split it.. Some times you have to be creative to be able to accomplish the end goal; but with determation it can be done.. Hope this all helps

Great ideas! A few I practice already. We do not have cable, mainly because our schedules are so busy it would be a waste. Instead, every evening at dinner we have 'movie night'. Saves money and makes for family time together. We have Kroger grocery stores that also sell gas. We have a card as well that will give us 3 cents off, 10 cents after we spend a certain amount on groceries. Thanks for sharing and all the great ideas.

A good one that we do it so switch a lot of things off at the powerpoint at night before we go to bed and it's even better if you can unplug them too. It will save a fair bit on the electricity bill. We've noticed a huge difference when we started doing it. When we do our grocery shopping we always look for specials and discounts and if it's food that can be stored for months we buy extra to keep beforethe price goes back up.Also it may be a temptation but skip the biscuit and chips aisle. If you want snacks get some fruits or something instead, it can be a lot healthier and cheaper to do. One that my mum does is she waits for petrol prices to go down before she fills up and usually has a voucher with 4 - 8 cents off which we get from the supermarket. Another way is to save on ATM fees. Not sure if it's the same where you are but if you get cash out from the supermarket it's free unlike the ATM whch charges at the very least $2. One that I'm doing now is growing some of my own veggies and fruits. In our garden we have figs, apricots, lemons and persimmons. I have planted strawberries, peas and red onions and we also have tomato plants and parsley. We have a friend that grows lettuce and cucumbers and has an orange tree as well. That's about it for now
