Marking Place In Book

How do you remember the page you read last in a book? Do you use any of these items to remember your place book marker, ribbon, business cards, plain piece of paper, note card, recipe card, coupon, or something else?
I know when I'm reading a cookbook I use a blank recipe card to mark the spot when I'm going to write down the recipe, if I don't have enough time to write it down. Occasionally, I will keep reading to the end of the chapter and then put a coupon there to let me know I might need to put items on my grocery shopping list.
If I'm reading a book about animals I tend to use a book marker with animals and if I have one for that animal, then its used. Right now, I am reading a mystery and while solving the crime I have an index card in the book to write down clues, as I enjoy solving the crime before the book ends and before learning who committed the crime. Its fun to see if I'm right.
Last year, I received a book as a gift with a beautiful ribbon in it. It was so nice that the person gave me such a great gift and its now on my to be read shelf. I need to hurry up and read it before the holidays arrive.
Do you use different items?

I think we all have a habit that somebody wants us to break. Thanks for posting.

I think that is a great idea to write down where your at in a book, as you never know the book marker could be in the wrong place. Its hard for me when somebody in my family decides to move the marker and tells me it fell out of the book. Thanks for posting.

I cut interesting strips from Christmas or birthday cards for book marks, they are stiff enough to be moved regularly and one of these will last for several books. I have made a few for myself on stiffened paper or light cardboard, and I punch a little hole at the bottom and thread some coloured wool through so that I can find it easily.
My favourite bookmark was a gift from a friend and it was hand crocheted and starched. It worked very well until I washed it, but I have kept it although it is not very useful but it is pretty and it reminds me of my friend.
Now I have a Kindle this problem is largely solved because it automatically returns me to the page I last read.

Hand crafted bookmarks are a great idea, as each one can be different and used again. I think its so special that a friend hand made a book marker for you, as your right each time you look at this special gift you will think of your friend. Thanks for posting.

Well, I use a Kindle and I don't need anything really to place a mark in. But if I am reading something that is not on a kindle, I used to fold the pages a bit so I can remember were I left off at. Unless I have on hand a book mark or a piece of paper to mark my spot. When I am using a cookbook and I want to remember the recipe I'd like to use I use Post its to stick to the page with the paper sticking out so that I can remember where that recipe is.

I love my Kindle, as it reads to me. This helps me greatly as my eyes get tired easily. It really reduces eye strain and my eye doctor was glad to hear how I read many books. I do enjoy holding a hardcover book and do so several times a week. Thanks for posting.

I like your method of bookmarking, especially the use of a blank note card for cookbooks. I don't really have a particular way of bookmarking my place in books. I typically try to read to the end of a chapter or section in order to remember my place. Sometimes I dog-ear the page. It doesn't always work though, and I often find myself spending lots of time trying to find my place again. For cookbooks and textbooks, I like to use the post it markers. I think these are pretty cool because then you can color code things (like for instance, in a cookbook use a different color for main dishes, side dishes, desserts, or even for different types of recipes such as gluten-free, heart healthy, etc.). Sometimes I just use whatever is lying around to mark my spot. When all else fails, I just leave the book open. There's really no rhyme or reason to how I do it.

I like the idea of color coding and may start hunting for different color blank recipe cards. It certainly would be a fast reference to the dish without opening the book. We certainly can leave the book open, if we only want to know what page to read next. Thanks for posting.

one tip i read in a magazine is using a paperclip and putting it on the exact line where you stopped. i thought it was a great idea, but i keep forgetting and go back to my deep-seated habit of guessing and skimming until i hit the jackpot!

I always stop at the bottom of the page; however, this sounds like a great idea. It would be helpful for a really dull book that my daughter needs to read for one of her college classes. Thanks for the tip.

Call me old fashioned but I like to use a book mark lol. I usually have a few of them laying around. Mostly really cute ones with photos of dogs on them and a big long piece of yarn that sticks out of the pages. The book marks I choose don't in anyway relate to the theme of the book I am reading. Its kinda funny how you try and coordinate the two.

Thanks for posting. I am one of the Moms that does so many things at once that I must do whatever it takes to get a great dinner on the table with an after dinner treat. Some days I work more hours then others, so really have to find great ways to get a quick meal together, as I try to avoid eating a lot of fast food on days with long work hours.

I remember the days when I had real bookmarks. I bought one about a year ago of a 3D flamingo scene, so I at least have one. But if I'm reading more than one thing, or I can't find that regular bookmark, I use either a coupon, or I turn down the page I'm on. I don't like turning down even the tips of the pages, so I try not to do that.

I usually am reading more than one book; specially, with the holidays coming so soon. One of my gifting ideas is food in a jar, so I will be hunting for possibilities to gift using recipe cards as bookmarks. Thanks for posting.

Yes...sometimes I use a real bookmark....sometimes a coupon out of a magazine....sometimes I just do the dog ear thing. I shouldn't do that but when you are sitting someplace and have forgotten your bookmark you have a tendency to just turn over the edge of the page.

I know its hard to remember to bring a bookmark when I'm not reading at home. Its so enjoyable to read, as I feel relaxed when its a good book. Thanks for posting.

When I was young, about 7 years old, I was told by a friend to turn the corners of the pages down so I did. A librarian noticed a book I returned and sat me down and nicely told me about consideration for others, how doing that damaged the book and eventually made the corners break off. She also told me and showed me how putting a book down open on its pages will break the spine. What an education! And she said it in a way that did not make me ashamed or embarrassed, what a good person she was with children! So now I use bookmarks.
I have one that my sister crocheted for me in my favorite color, green, with a green ribbon running through it. I use that for my Guidebooks daily reading (a great book I picked up at Goodwill). I use the bookmarks provided by the library for most of my books but another one I really like was made by my ex husband's aunt for me. I like bookmarks that mean something to me but I'll use anything at hand if they are not available.

The green book marker sounds great! I love green. Wish I could crochet, as tried when I was in elementary school during class, as it was taught in school, but just couldn't get it right. I did learn to knit and one of my favorite projects was a knitted chicken. I still have potholders from my youth. My crochet work is as bad as my sewing just glad I passed the class! My brothers use to laugh at my skills, as it was only required for girls. Sure glad we have come out of the dark ages and its no longer required. Some changes have come in my lifetime and sure hope women continue to make progress in getting equal pay for doing the same amount of work. Thanks for posting.

Memory as well, though it fails me more now that I have more obligations. I used to just remember that I needed to start back on a certain page, even if I didn't remember the paragraph. Though now I try to finish a chapter before putting the book down. If it's a book with a cover, I use the book cover itself. If not, I'll either remember the chapter or try to put a little sliver of paper in the crease to remind me.

I remember the days of finishing the chapter and stopping reading for the night. Now I find its harder, as my vision isn't very good, so I stop more often. Eye Doctor told me to stop reading when I'm trying to hard to read the words on the page. Thanks for posting.

I have this habit of buying a book marker or postcard for every book that I am reading. And even if I'm already finished with that book, I do not use the book marker for other books, I just leave it there. Sometimes I would read again some of my finished books and then the book markers will come in handy once more. I rarely dog ear my books.

I'm glad to hear not dog earring the books, as I like my books to not have any damage. It would be nice to have a book marker for every book on my shelves; however, my shelves have a lot of cookbooks now. I have considered adding a blank recipe card to each book and hunt for a great recipe to make in a jar for gifting this holiday season. Thanks for the reply.
