You can defragment your drive! If you are on windows simply go to start all programs Accessories System Tools then launch Disk Defragmenter Try and defrag some of your drive. This should boost your computer performance a lot if you're using an old computer and slightly faster on newer computer. Just make sure that your hard drive is hard disk not SSD (Solid State Drive) cause if it is an ssd then it would instead ruin your hard drive. But if your hard drive is more than 5 years old I simply recommend to buy a new one It's not that expensive. If you want a super fast hard disk , go for an SSD which will cost MORE but boot 3x faster. Disadvantage of an ssd is that the drive will start to fail when it's over 15 years of usage. Defragging SSD will simply shorten lifespan of an SSD Facts: Defragging only helps Hard Disk Drive because HDD use a spinning disk and a reader head which the speed of the disk is not always the same. Overtime, the drive will be like a messy bedroom(imagine using stuff in your room without keeping it in place, defragging is like putting everything back on the shelves. Hope this helps :D

Thank you for the detailed answer, it's very kind of you! I have reinstalled my system. Before that, I use the software "diskgenius" to check my hard disk, finding that there are two bad sectors in my hard disk. I am worrying about someday the hard disk can not be used again. Cause so many important data in it! I don't want to change another laptop, cos I just buy it just two months ago.

Well, in my little experience I have with the hardware (ok I took a technical diploma hw, but it dates back to 2004!), I can tell you that hard disk is basically one of the fundamental elements of a computer. The advice I can give you is the following. Since I seem to have realized that your hard drive is almost at the end, you should make a backup of all your important data on other media to avoid data loss. Once this is done you need to replace your old hard disk with a new one. this is what I can advise you.

Not worth to change just the hard disk , if i were you i would rather the whole laptop if money is not a concern to you.

Hi, You should consider changing the internal drive. A newly installed operating system on a new HDD could really speed things up, that is if the other components (RAM, VGA, mainboard) are still running properly. The slowdown is actually the delay of the HDD to pick up the components of the operating system from the bad sectors and loading them to the RAM to the processor and vice versa.

Changing a hard disk in a laptop may not be the most cost effective thing to do unless you are able to do it yourself. Consider buying another one. How old is the one you have? I had a IBM Thinkpad for years and it did the same. I had bad sectors and a hard disk failure was imminent. It cost too much to fix the old thing and I went to a pawn shop and got one like new for 200.00 then just last month I buy a brand new Gateway for 300.00

Bad sectors are signs that a hard drive is starting to fail. Backup your files into another hard drive and replace the hard drive on your laptop. Here are typical causes why hard drives get bad sectors: 1) computer not shut down properly 2) shock 3) physical damage 4) excessive heat or moist 5) wearing due to age Regularly check the health of your hard drives, they are your important storage after all.
