If you had to have an 'Emergency Go Bag', what would you put in it?

That's a hard one. I guess a first aid kit, copies of important documents and papers, water, non-perishable snacks, matches/lighter, flashlight, batteries, portable radio, cell phone charger (if there's a place to charge it).

If you take prescriptions you need 3-7 days worth of meds. OTC pain killers including aspirin. If you have pets, plan for them. I have a flashlight that I can crank and my son has a radio you can crank. I wonder if there is a cell phone charger that you can crank.

I do believe there are solar powered cell phone chargers, but as we see in the aftermath of Sandy, the towers are down and there is no service. It is a good idea to have change in case you come upon a pay phone. Solar yard lights are great to have as you can charge them and always have light.

I didn't even think of medication or anything OTC for pain relief. I've no pets, but I didn't think of that either. I imagine there isn't a cell phone charger that cranks, but there should be.

I would think though that the windable charger would need to be universal to all phones, we all know that they come out with a new one and the chargers, they don't change much but the newer smart phones have a skinnier charge port. I believe I heard somewhere that there aren't as many payphones anymore, I imagine the phones that they do have left aren't in great service or working order. I'd hope that businesses would allow use of their line in such case of a disaster like Sandy.

If I was responsible for more then myself then : A change of clothes for atleast three days for everyone, chargers (extra) for everyone's phone, atleast $100, Water, Flashlights, Batteries, Crossword puzzle or word search, An Old ID for everyone, A few blankets, two or three towels, pillows. I suppose it'd be a real big bag.

Because so many disasters cause broken glass it is recommended you have a pair of sturdy shoes to wear.

Another good point I hadn't even thought of. I'd have to grab the shoes that are hardly worn. I still have a pair of shoes I need to just toss out.

Important documents like birth certificates, insurance cards and food. Actually, if I had to have an emergency bag, I would have to dig everything out of my car! I have rechargeable batteries and charger, an inverter with two electric plugs and a USB port, pens, paper, jumper cables, first aid kit, ibuprofen, half a case of water, tools, you name it, most likely it's in my car. I used to keep snacks there but when everyone found out I had chewy bars in the console and water in the back in a little cooler, instead of waiting until someone would be 'starving' or 'dying of thirst' they would just go to my car when they felt like it, so I quit keeping emergency snacks. If I can't take my car, I'm in trouble!

lol too funny! I used to keep water and snacks in my trunk as well, but like you, I had my husband and daughter raiding it on occasion and then bam! all gone! lol

Right, the things you mentioned are really important to be inside an Emergency Go Bag. Families should have an emergency go bag especially fire prone areas so anytime any disasters come in they just grab one bag and all important things are ready and well kept inside.

It is important to have some cash on hand, you are correct. Some people rely on credit cards or debit cards but if there is no power you cannot use credit or debit cards and some places will not accept checks.

That's true. Cash is best to have on hand. And of course your medication is a must.
