Do you know: Enough sleep is important than eating!

Dear mylotters, “A person will die from total lack of sleep sooner than from starvation. Death will occur about 10 days without sleep, while starvation takes a Few weeks”. I don’t know how many of us are aware about this truth. Hungry will lead us to eat even if we are too busy on any work but sleep, I think, many are not caring to get enough sleep. How about you, do you give importance to sleep than your meals? Do you sleep enough? Please do share your views. Thanks to all. November 9, 2012.

I was often told by my husband the same thing. I was actively working online in 2010. And since it was something new to me, I wanted to learn and earn more. And so I was practically working 18 hours a day and got 2-3 hours of sleep per day. I was receiving good pay with my online job, but a year after, my health deteriorated. In 2011, I have been in and out of the ER and was finally hospitalized for 4 days. I had hypocalcemia. I would have normally just be taking a pill or two to stop whatever I was feeling, but I guess I had low resistance due to lack of rest.

Hello Jenny, There are so many complications may happen to our health due to lack of sleep. I really don't know how you manage with 2-3 hours sleep. Usually I am sleeping more than 6-7 hours, if any day it interrupted, I can’t manage in office time, I felt sleepy. Good to know that you are ok now and please maintain a good sleeping habit. Health is our wealth. Thanks for sharing your experience. Have a great time.

@tangleddreams, I actually couldn't fall asleep when I was working them coz of my abnormal eagerness to earn. My weight dropped and looking back, I think I must have been looking like a zombie! @Sreekala! Thanks! After giving up on that kind of job, I did have enough sleep afterwards. And I know I am not getting any younger, so I need to be healthy as much as I can. I got 4 kids that needs my care.

Oh wow! How did you do 2-3 hours ? I have missed a days sleep but not every single day! You saw how it affected your health. Wow. I don't know how I did it while I had a newborn but it was like that running on pure adrenaline. I often slept during the day while everyone was out because baby and I would get the recuperative sleep :) Glad you are okay now!

Thanks for that information. But I guess a healthy diet and a balance sleep is both important needs of our body. But sleep is just hard to get when your getting older and your mind is just full of thinking. I'm actually besides my daughter who looks very calm in her sleep even though there are loud noise outside. I wish I could sleep like her.

Hello Sree I surely didn't know about this thing before. But I don't have to take this words seriously as I never compromise with my sleep. Its true that since a year I got habit of late sleeping, but I never skip ratio of sleeping for 7 to 8 hours. And since a week, because of lots of work I am sleeping early and getting up early in the morning too.. So it look like I am getting my old habit back.

Hi dear, Don't know whether you reached the payout in last month. First you have your breakfast regularly dear. Then try to have one glass of lemon juice in every morning on empty stomach (lukewarm water, not adding any sugar). Try it first week and see any difference. If you felt any changes then continue for some days. Lemon is good to remove the fat.

Hi Sree , I love to sleep provided i get some free time even during the day. But there were/are times when we are streesed and we can't sleep or we get a disturbed sleep at night. Certain days cause me a headache. However, over the time, i have understood how important is khana, pina and sona... (eating, drinking and sleeping and not the gold....) Enjoy Diwali and happy & safe diwali...

HI Sree! How are you doing. Good Post. I can remain without my sleep of food. If I'm deprived either of the two for few days, I may go insane. I catch up with my sleep on weekends, if it is not possible on weekdays. When am too tired or have not slept for the whole night, I do not mind skipping my office for completing my sleep.. Have a happy Diwali.

My mom keep bugging me about it, she tells me why do you like to sleep than to eat, you will get starve". But no matter how she insists, I like to sleep more and I never bothered if my stomach is making a sound as long as I have enough sleep. I believe both are bad, but on the other side, if we do not eat, we can drink water and sleep or drink hot choco or coffee without eating solid food and we can be okay, but when we do not have complete sleep, we can have low blood and at one time we might fall on the ground because of that. Not having enough sleep can get me migraine but without eating for whole day, I will only get stomach ache. But still I consider both are bad for our health.

I am aware of my bad habit but I am not doing it all the time. . I am hard headed when it comes to sleeping than eating. I cannot eat food when my eyes are shut and too tired, that is why my mother prepares me hot milk to have some food intake or she give me hot coffee to make me awake.

We need enough sleep, food, water etc for maintaining good health. Have your breakfast everyday and added nutritious food in break fast menu. I hope it will help you a lot. Take care and have a great weekend.

I am not exactly dependent on sleeping pills just now. I take a tablet just once in a couple of weeks or so when I find that I have not had a good nights sleep for long. A strip of ten tablets lasts me four to six months. It has been prescribed to me by the doctor and he knows that I dont take it too frequently so he says its okay.

Hello, sleep and eating both are important for everyone to keep health ok. It is right that some person ignore needs of sleep. Every person must be sleep at least 6 hours in day. With eating sleep is not possible. I think hungry person can't sleep.

Hi didi I suffer from insomnia and sleep only 4-5 hours a day unless I am on those horrible medicines which make me sleep for 18+ hours. I tried staying awake and was able to go completely sleepless for only 60 hours in 2000. Haven't tried it any more because I was feeling too ill when I did not sleep for those 60 hours. It was because of work that I couldnt sleep - we were all on a deadline and a lot of money was at risk - we all got paid 3 times our salary for those 60 hours - and I got promoted too.

Dear Sidhu, Yes of course, hard work always pays well but we have to consider our health too. However, I understand you done it that time not for money. How do you feel on 4-5 hours sleep? I don't know much about 'insomnia'. I may feel so many discomforts if I can't sleep properly even in one night. Same time I can't sleep over time too. Where are you now? Take care of your health and regards to K.

Insomnia is a medical condition when you dont feel sleepy. Since my college days I have been sleeping late at around 1:00 or 2:0 am and waking up at 7:00 am. Now since my illness and being at home, I dont get sleepy until 3:00 am. I guess and also those doctors tell me that 8 hours of sleep is the right amount of sleep for anyone. But I rarely get those 8 hours. Right now, I am at home here at Bhubaneswar.

I totally believe this. When we don't have anything to eat, our body takes up stored proteins and fats, so we don't really die right away. In fact, there are many street people who wanders around with empty stomach and have no nutrients at all, for days or even weeks. But, since they get to sleep for as long as they need to, they stay alive. Our body needs rest to recuperate and keep all systems working well. Without it, it will start to malfunction.

people need too sleep to regenerate, during the course of the day our brain cells die so when we sleep our brain cells are reproduced so its important that we get at least 8 hours sleep a day. Also if we dont get enough sleep we feel run down and are prone to getting sick anway.

Hi Sree, I fell the ratio of sleep and eating should be at par, as both are equally important to survive and live a healthy life style. You can't live good healthy life if you compromise on any of above. You know our system (body) is very smart, even we ignore we get signals as to improve, the people who understand such signals and work on it, surely achieve good health, if we ignore we pay in long term as result of lot of health issues.

Hi dear, I agree both are important to lead a healthy life. Younger generation is not taking care of these two things properly, the result is either they end up their life or to be addicted with so many diseases. Anand, do you know what is the signals, if you lack sleep in night definitely that will feed in brain and in day time you may be sleepy, even though you are in office, but in office, sleeping is impossible.

I think major percentage will go to bed without any force (those who were not able to sleep properly in night), because it is must for our body and we may feel to sleep automatically. Take care. sleep is essential. I think I once managed to stay awake for two consecutive nights. Well, I had one or two 10 min naps in between or so :D Anyway, recently I saw a guy on Youtube who allegedly stayed awake for more than 11 days!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zLnf2YH2jms as for not eating I've once made an experiment where I didn't eat (just drink) anything at all for 72 hours. It was very hard, too and afterwards I felt very week. I'd be careful though. Even if such long periods of time without sleep or eating can be achieved this may cause permanent damage to the body (resp. the brain). Cheers

Hello stk, I heard about people who do fasts (for loosing weight), do not eat anything except fruits. They are drinking lot of water and eat apples. (One lady wrote that Apple is ideal on fasting along with water). They go for fast of 3 days continuously and it will help them to loose fats from the body. But in case of sleep, nothing beneficial to our body, if we forget about the sleep it will damage our health. Thank you so much. Have a great weekend.

Hi rami, I wake up in between 5.30 to 6 am and I can go to bed after 11 pm only. I am working and have two kids. I am staying far away from native so nobody there from family or in-laws to help me for anything. I have to manage all chores along with kid's studies. Still I felt am getting good sleep. But in case, if my sleep broke in between then it creates problems in my daily activities, I may sleepy in office etc. You have a small kid and I guess there may be interruptions in sleep in between.
