How do you pronounce the word "wifi"?

I get used to pronounce "wifi" as [waifai]. But last night I read online and it seems this should be pronounced as [wifi]. Is that true? I can't believe that I have kept saying it wrong for such a long time. But somewhat I think "waifai" sounds better.

Wifi can be deceiving. The way I pronounce it, I'll spell phonetically. Y-Fy. That is how I pronounce it, but that's how i've always heard it on t.v.

Oh I wasn't sure. By the way you spelled it I thought you pronounced it more like Way-Fae lol. Yes I think Y-Fy is the correct pronounciation, or a lot of people are pronouncing it wrong..

I say it as wye fye, the letter i in the word says its name. That is how I most often hear it said.

Hi youless, here in my place "wifi" is pronounced as "Why Fine". To make it clear, here are the sentences with the two words in it. "Why" you always come to this coffee shop? It's pretty "fine" to have free internet connection here and I can enjoy surfing web and sipping my cup of coffee at the same time. Do we people here pronounce "wifi correctly? Happy posting

Me also. I used to say it as "wayfay" because before I learned that word, I already heard it that way. I would blame my teacher for that. lol. Thanks for the information anyway.

Yeap, we pronounce "wifi" as [wai-fai] too. It does sounds a bit weird pronouncing as [wi-fi]. Regardless is British English or American English, both pronounce it as [wa?.fa?]. You may refer to this link for your reference : http://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/british/wi-fi?q=wi-fi Have a good day mylotting! =)

I have heard this pronunciation before, with the i being pronounced as the i in sing. However, I do believe that the correct pronunciation is the commonly used one with the i pronounced as the i in find. I cannot imagine where the other suggestion originated, but naturally it is likely to be passed around and will confuse people.

Sounds like you agree with the latter pronunciation.

I always pronounce it rightly or wrongly why-fy, I don't think there is a wrong or right way of saying it, it probably depends on your mother tongue, dialect or tone. Bit like neither or niether, (neether or niver) one is no more right than the other. Words are funny like that don't you agree.

I trust the British English

The word was apparently coined after the term "HiFi" (which was short for 'High Fidelity' and pronounced /'hai fai/ - 'Hi' as in 'high' and 'Fi' to rhyme with it). The correct pronunciation of "WiFi" should, therefore be /'wai fai/. "WiFi" is not actually short for anything meaningful. The 'Wi' part is short for 'wireless' but the second part 'Fi' (short for 'fidelity' in the term "HiFi") actually has no relevance or meaning in terms of a wireless connection.

I'm answering from my e-mail so you probably have the answer already. But in case you don't, it's pronounced like you are saying "why fye".

Hi youless! I also think it sounds better and that is what I heard from other people. I also searched online about the correct pronunciation and I found out it's really [waifai]. Maybe we should have to search about it again. Have a nice day!

I don't understand why some people will think it sounds as [wifi] rather than [waifai].

I'm not sure. In my country we pronounce it [wifi], but that actually stands closer to our language.... so for me, this one sounds better :D.
