Seller’s techniques

It is festival time, Dashara is gone, Diwali is coming, the seller’s adopt techniques for selling the products. Here is what I saw. ‘Buy one, take one free’ – This technique is old, the word ‘FREE’ is always misleading; 2 jars of pickle in one pack; were offered under this for 200 rupees; on checking I found one jar was sold @ 100 rupees; so what was free? In a jewelry shop there was a board saying, ‘owner of a famous brand’ has become bankrupt, so to repay debt; he is selling jewelry at throwaway price’; I went and checked several items. They were fake cheap jewelry; they had price tags almost 50% more than real price. Let me tell, I have gold-jewelry business of our own. 50% plus 40% discount in Sari and cloth materials. In shops showing this banner, there is heavy rush as if they get ‘free’; with 90% discount. Well here is the trick, you buy something costing 100 rupees; you think you pay 10 only; no you pay 30; see how? 50% of 100 is 50, balance is 50; next 40% of 50 is 20; thus total discount is 70 only; you have to pay 30 not 10. Any such selling technique adopted in your place? Please share your comments and opinions on this? Please respond. “Happy Diwali and thanks in advance”. Professor ‘Bhuwan’. . 10/11/2012

I believe that we are all familiar with the buy one get one free sale. However, in the stores around here, you are also able to buy a single item for half of the original price. The stories of stores going out of business and selling their products for a huge loss are fairly common as well. However, I've observed that the same store will "go out of business" time and time again, so this is something that is deceitful. Now the sales of 50% plus another percent off is something that I see all the time and I don't think that is deceitful at all. Yes, it is easy to misunderstand this type of sale, but it is an honest practice in my opinion.

I agree the practice is honest, but many get confused and it works. Thanks for sharing your views

Namaskar Sir I think all this has started due to the corporatization of the economy. The competition is so high that everyone needs to come up with something or the other to make a profit - it is sad though that the government takes no action on such misleading things. Yesterday, I had gone to a nearby mall and I too encountered the Buy One Get One Free - but the prices were double. I asked the sales person and he replied - these are special economy packs which are for sale from the Organization. If you need to buy please do, otherwise there is nothing much I can help. Every other shop here is doing similar. They either hike the price of a single piece which includes the second and offer the other for "Free" or they play with the discount rates. Like one happened at Dushehra when we were buying a shirt for my nephew - buy 2 get the 3rd free. And the pricing was changed!

prof, most of the shop keepers following this kind of tactics to sell their goods, in fact they will sell their old items in this festival time with a great reduction. People will fall with this tactic and thought that they bought thing with a great discount, but the real fact is the shop keepers sold all the old and unsold things to the innocent persons with the name of discount

You are right, the word 'discount' and 'free' are misleading
