My cat passes gas a lot

I kinda need some advise, my cat is passing off a lot of gas, some is quite noxious. I noticed that when we got her (she's ten) this past spring, and I kinda mentioned it to her previous owner and the the lady said "oh, ya, we didn't tell you that!" type thing. Is this normal? I guess it's getting on our nerves her farting like that. She's so fixed on the purina friskies and doesn't really eat anything else even fish or chicken or anything except for that cat food and water. I wish I have money to take her to the vet but I don't. Otherwise, she's pretty healthy. She's eating, happy, her bowels working normally, all that good stuff.

What were they feeding her? What are you feeding her? Some cats tend to be gassy and usually there is a reason. I kknwo Stripes can get like this not as bad, but he will need him tummy rubbed then fart. I changed their food and he has been completely fine.

Purina Friskies for indoor cats. I'm thinking of switching to Iams, which seems to have good animail proteins. I was just feeding them the same stuff the previous owners had, cuz that's what I know that Kitty likes. I'll experiement with small bags of other foods like the Iams until I can see a difference in the gas. Also, I heard what Garden Gerty was saying, the kitty grass, I seen that in pet stores, I'll buy that at the end of the month as well, I hear you can also grow from seeds, will look into that too.

Both Friskies and Iams are very poor quality food which may be the issue. I was feeding mine Friskies years ago, and had the same issue (just not strong sufficate gas). Many have fillers such as corn and grain which could be the cause (which is why they are so cheap and will eventually cause a lot more health issues with the cat). Try a grain free food, not saying you need to buy some $100 bag of food with one cat it should last awhile. I currently have mine on Performintrin Ultra Grain Free and they love it (I buy the big big bag and its $65 a month but having 1 cat you can get the small bag for $20 last a month or more - I have never had just one cat so I dont know how much they eat but the small size is about $20.00). I was looking at Now dry cat food as well tonight, which is very similar, and a little cheapier. Do you feed her wet food as well? Also, what type?.

I give mine cat grass, at work we sell pregrown grass for cheapier its $2.99 for a plant. When it's not available I then grow my own. You just have to watch they dont eat too much which could cause diarrhea, or them puking it up (I know from experience mine go nuts, and just keep eating it until its gone so I have to bring it out and watch them).

Murphy about killed my boyfriend and I one night. She passed gas one night and we both were gagging and had tears running down our faces. We had to open the windows (it was winter time) and air the house out. P U!!!! Khuay, when he was a kitten, would fart when someone picked him up. He had some of the most obnoxious farts you could smell! Once he grew up it isn't quite as often that he farts when a person picks him up. He also would fart when he either jumped up on the bed or down on the floor. Abby happened to be nosing him when he jumped up on the bed and farted. That poor dog nearly fell over from the smell! It would have been a sight because Abby is a pit/lab mix.
Abby, too, has problems with farts. I started giving her yogurt daily and her fart problem has ended too. So I tried a smaller amount with the cats to see what would happen. It worked miracles!!! No more Murphy farts in the dark of night, no more Khuay farts that nearly wipe out the dog.
I now slip the cats a teaspoon of yogurt and it seems to help their gas issues. I get the plain yogurt and will give it to them instead of milk. No more horrible farts!
I don't use Friskies or Iams. Iams is made by one of the cheaper brands and I figure that they use the same recipe but put a higher price on the stuff. I use either blue buffalo or one of the other natural foods. I also will cook meat for them rather than give them canned food.

Well, I'm glad you warned me about the Iams, I was considering that brand, well, I won't get it then, LOL. I thought cats were lactose-intolerant, so that's why we don't feed Kitty dairy products. But it's a learning experience for me that's for sure. I'll definitely do research on the yogurt stuff, and see if Kitty like it. I wouldn't give her much though.

My cats did that when they ate too rich a food. Is she an indoor cat? If so see if you can switch her to an indoor formula of cat food. It has chlorophyl in it I think. Or see if you can grow her a little patch of grass. That is supposed to help.

I had a cat who did that and it did take a trip to the vet and some meds to cure it, and ho-boy was it BAD! We called them "green fogs". Totally put us off both our dinner and the movie we were watching one time when she pass through... passing you might say....

It been a few weeks since i logged iinto MyLot and I did manage to change Kitty's cat food and she's much better now. I'm relieved because I actually thought she had some serious health problem and I'm glad it was only the quality of food she was getting.

Ew, ya really, tell me about it! Anyway, we did end up changin the food and Kitty is doing much better now, what a huge relief. There was one day she was nearly intolerable but that's the day we completely changed her food but after that the situation went lots better. It's Whiskas dry food but I'll start giving her wet food and some peices of raw meat and kitty grass over time. Some other posters in this thread warned against Iams, so I"m glad I didn't get that.

I think that it is definitely the food that your cat is eating. Our two cats eat nothing but BARF (Bone And Raw Food), pieces of fish or tinned tuna. They eat no commercial processed cat foods like what you would buy in the supermarket and have no gas issues that I am ever aware of.

Ya, I thought of the BARF diet but want to make sure they're getting all the nutrition that they'd get if they're in the wild, you know? You obviously know what you're doing, whereas I'm a newbie so it's a learning process for me. I hear some cats can have too much protein in their diets as well. We're feeding her some meats from the table but i'll see what she does with a bit of raw meat, haven't done that yet.
