Dyslexia produces Great Minds and Artists, it's NEVER a hindrance to success

Dyslexia is mostly defined as a learning disability both in reading and spelling. But, are we also aware that it is a gift? In my opinion, this state is specially possessed or should I say only possessed by much stronger people. The great mind Albert Einstein didn't know how to tie his shoelaces because of dyslexia but still can solve complicated mathematical formulas. The inventor of telephone Alexander Graham Bell may have poor grades because he can see things indifferently. Who can tell the famous Tom Cruise also got this state? Also Cher the singer. Whoopi Goldberg, remember her? She only knew she had dyslexia when she's already an adult. The American film producer Walt Disney also have dyslexia. And ofcourse, the First President of U.S., Geaorge Washington possessed the same gift. I was moved by the movie "Every child is special". It's a special movie indeed. What made these people successful is the fact that they used this gift to their creativity. Maybe with the support of their parents or other people around them, they strive to succeed and reach their dreams. If these dyslexics people managed to succeed in their lives, why do others can only see their disabilities and would blame the world of their being desperate? I don't believe that there are unlucky people. Let me just say, they choose not to see the gifts inside them.

Yes every child/person is special. It's just a pity most people (especially teachers) don't see it that way. Although we all know there are a lot of different children/people education is still the same and so is society. Nobody loves creative/different people. These are the people who are bullied day after day. Who are told they are too stupid to learn and will never be anyone and have no future. Dyslexia has nothing to do with that, since also people who can not read or write (never learned it which is not the same as dyslexia at all!) are very creative if it comes to remebering things (incl. long lectures). I doubt so many people have dyslexia as is statet. In many cases it's way more bad education, no intention to learn or teached in the wrong way. Those who learn different (use the other brain part) see letters/words as a picture and are not able to learn the "common" way. But that doesn't mean they have dyslexia.

People with dyslexia have different ways of understanding things unlike those who have none. If you are different in a society, you are questioned and worst, would become an outcast. More often than not, people don't understand these cases. Not all can be patient teachers, they see dyslexics as dumb individuals. But little than they know, their creative minds can produce genius ideas. There are many kids who are bullied in schools and different people who are not welcome to different instances. In this case, however, our subject are the dyslexics.

Hi rizzaspeaks, Every child is special but sadly every child is not told that by parents and teachers. All parents need to teach their children too that just because a child is different, doesn't mean that he is not special. As you pointed out many famous people have had and do have dyslexia. Parents and teachers need to know and point out to such children that they still can do great things and that they are important in the lives of others. I agree that Dyslexia may be a learning disability, but it is also a gift. Blessings.

That's right Pose. That's the very first thing every parent and teacher should do-make every child realize how special he/she is. That each uniqueness serves a purpose to bring joy to others' lives.

People who succeed in spite of having non standard abilities are indeed stronger, but not everyone has the kind of support to find that survivor and success in them. There are also many success stories of people we have deemed mentally ill, and people who have other, more visible physical handicaps. However, in my country and many others, tests and measurements of "success" are standardized and if you do not fit the mold, you are not seen as a success no matter how gifted and creative you are. I think the teachers and parents who know how to give the learning tools to let kids succeed are very gifted. We need to be more open to learning and expression of knowledge in different ways. However, just as you cannot label all people with dyslexia as failures, you cannot label them all as gifted either. People are all different.

Gifts may be wrapped differently. It may make us smile, it may make us happy but it may also make us feel bad. It depends on how we perceive them. True, not all are fortunate to have the support they needed to help them survive and succeed. There are different inspirational stories of not ordinary persons. Some will admire them, some will be touched by their stories, yet, there will always be some who can never see success in them. If we are different from the society, we are questioned, criticized and will never belong. That's the harsh reality.

Hi, This discussion reminds me the Hindi movie 'Taare Jaminn par'. In this film the boy is having the problem of dyslexia. His parents are not aware of this. His father always become angry and scold and beat him because his result was very poor. So they sent them to boarding school forcibly. But there a drawing teacher understands that the boy has Dyslexia. But he is excellent in painting. He raised his confidence and prepare him to take part in drawing competition and he stood first in that competition. Thus everyone has special talent. I like to mention beautiful thoughts - You are born as an original don't die as a copy. Don't care if someone doesn't like you. You were not put on earth to please anyone. Life is to express yourself and not to impress others.

In my opinion, not all are gifted. Some special children with similar characteristics can not have special treatment like them. But I agree that dyslexic can modify their skills into different ways. Even Tom Cruise has this condition, and he is a good actor.

This state makes a child/person special from the normal person who can read and spell letters and numbers correctly. These people have a different level of intelligence, which they call ABnormal- above normal, extra-ordinary. We may have different definitions of being "gifted". Being gifted, for me, doesn't necessarily mean a thing to be rejoiced or a source of happiness. Gifts come in different package. We just have to learn it's purpose to see the wondrous thing it can do to our ordinary lives.

Yes everyone is special. Great minds come from great soul. Rizza, your heart could probably crush if you will see special children turned to adult, tied in a tree or bed for the misconception that they are possesed by evil spirit or simply crazy because their parents did not know that they were not but just special. Good thing now that these disabilities are brought to media and discussed openly.
