I Know What You're Gonna Say..

...you're gonna say, "Jane, DON'T PAINT THE WOOD red, varnish or stain it..or something!" Well, I've made my mind up now (typical, stubborn Aries) and I WILL paint it gloss red. I shall take full responsibility for how good or bad it turns out. Here is the paint I intend to purchase. http://choiceful.com/categories/productdetail/7193 Johnstones is the same brand I used on the banister rail upstairs (the gloss white) and it's a trade paint which explains why it's cheap but extremely good to work with. For a novice like me it's a godsend lol. Wish me luck..once I get round to finally ordering some! I'm tempted to ring The Range locally to see if they have any although I'm not having any luck with telephone calls this week!

I have looked at the picture and I see what a gorgeous wood frame that is. In the picture doesn't show how warn you say it is. Still I would probably try and restore the original because I am a natural person.. Now looking at it in a creative mind which I also do. Red would be the best for this. It would make the design in the wood stand out more and give it a rich look. have fun.. would sand it good first though if it is varnished.. could come through and change the red color and you don't want to coat the paint on to heavily either.

Believe it or not, the wood you see is the sanded down version. Before it was in an awful tan colour (like fake tan) so it's definitely an improvement on that. I shall try my very best to paint it properly. I prefer using paint than varnish as it's not as sticky and will glide better, so I'm confident it will turn out well.

So it used to be painted before. I hate that tan color. I have a lot of lovely woodwork in my house painted tan. Yuck.

I once bought a ready to assemble armoire for my son. I had read about using fabric dye to color it, so I did it in red and black, and it was sharp. You then put a gloss varnish over it to protect it. On inexpensive wood there is not much you can do to harm it and almost everything you do to it improves it.

Wow, I love the colours red and black together..so dynamic! Yes, that was the thought I had about 'anything I do to this wood will improve it' and I hope we're BOTH proved right my friend. We shall track some paint down tomorrow and I will try and start it the same day if possible. We do need to find some hand rail brackets as well so the FIL can come down (probably on Sunday) to fix the rail to the wall. I'm also in the market for 3 glass nesting tables, one of which I'll use for the Boston Fern...seen below. http://www.abode-interiors.co.uk/18-nest-of-3-glass-side-tables-ct016.html My plan is to sell the wooden coffee table on ebay (as that curved edge style is back in fashion) so that frees up space for what I want to put there i.e the above tables. The glass will give an illusion of space with the added benefit of being able to pull out one of the other tables from underneath for when Mum comes to visit. I've measured the space up and the bigger table will be in the middle, underneath the window (but a bit higher up than at present, which is what I want) with the others slotted beneath it. Eventually, I will have another coffee table in the middle of the room (preferably with drawers as storage is an issue) and at the other end of the room I'd like a matching curved glass computer desk to go with the nest of tables, so there's uniformity. I want a bigger one than the wooden one I have now so me and Mum can sit side by side looking at the computer screen. I can then move the smaller media unit but not sure where as yet. The lamp (or a desk lamp alternative) can go on the glass desk as it would be big enough to accommodate one. The landline, cordless telephone could go there as well, freeing up the telephone table for the printer if that doesn't fit on the desk. The tower would be to one side or underneath the desk if there is room. http://dwell.co.uk/102748/Puro-glass-desk-clear/ Not decided on what colour glass a dining-table will be yet but probably clear to go with the rest!! That would be along the opposite wall to the computer desk, which is, currently, underneath the opposite window to the plant! Got all that? Good! By the way, I'm prepared to wait for all this, I don't want it now. One step at a time is what we've been doing successfully up to now so the last thing I want is for hubby to get into debt. He's winning on the horses though..supervised by me of course. He stops now if he loses and only bets with any profits he's made. I shouldn't tell you that but, I promise you, the fact his computer doesn't work is in my favour as he can only bet with me in the room lol.

hi Janey I did not see the picture but it sounds like red would look really sharp there and gloss that will make it really modern and sharp and also very attractive. So I say go for it as it will look really good red is a great color to use in some places..

Great! Paint it red or any colour you like, who cares about someone elses advice anyway. You will find what you need, am sure about that.

Managed to find some Johnstones Signal Red paint today (and there was only one other pot left so other people like it just as much as I do) and I can see why. It's sooo bright, I love it! I've painted the first coat (as this particular paint doesn't require an undercoat) and will finish it off on Sunday with a second coat. I wasn't sure about it at first as it's such a change but now I love it. I will gloss varnish it afterwards to strengthen it as we have a tin of that for the hand rail anyway. I shall post photos of both once they're finished.
