Fresh fruits and vegetables of course are better. But my husband seems to think that canned vegetables have no value what so ever. Does anyone know about canned vegetables. I have read that they still have nutritional value but on the cans it doesn't say anything. So my husband doesn't believe. It would be great if we were always able to buy fresh fruits and vegetables every week but we just can't afford that right now not to mention how fast it would have to be eaten. And anyway with most vegetables they would have to be cooked anyway so I don't see why he makes such a big fuss about canned vegetables.

They are real expensive.. and not real good prices. But if you dont have time to cook fresh ones I guess they will have to do.

@maria yeah now a days the price of everything continues to go up. Where we live the price of canned vegetables is really cheap compared to buying fresh vegetables. Hopefully with time though and some savings we will be able to buy more fresh fruits and vegetables.

@Rob yeah there are some canned vegetables that taste good. But there are also ones that don't taste that great. I think though that when we think about vegetables to eat there really aren't that many to choose from that I would say are delicious.

Yeah we need to eat vegetables. It is crazy though to think about the BPA in canned food. I have been looking it up and it just goes to show that there are so many things in are food that we are probably not even aware of it. I wish we had enough money to buy all types of foods that are organic and natural. But we don't so we try to do the best that we can.

When it is possible, I definitely prefer to eat fresh fruits and vegetables. However, this is not something that is always possible. During the spring and summer season, I purchase fresh fruits and vegetables almost every day. However, we are now in the late fall season and there is really nothing that is in season here now. The result of this is that we will eat frozen vegetables and some canned vegetables. Canned vegetables do still have nutritional value, but with the choice between canned and frozen, flash frozen vegetables have maintained a much greater degree of their nutritional value.

Yeah I agree with you. When fruits and vegetables are out of season it can be even harder to keep the fresh items in our home. I do agree that canned and frozen vegetables still have nutritional value. And it is a lot easier to clean up compared to having to get rid of fruits and vegetables that have gone bad.

I believe canned fruits and veggies will give you less nutrition besides all nutritional facts in every product can be cheated so I prefer fresh fruits and veggies. If you have no choice to buy fresh fruits and veggies I think you can use them as an alternative but don't get used too much in canned products.

Thanks for your suggestions I appreciate. Yes it is healthy to eat fresh fruits and veggies. But I have been doing some readings about canned vegetables in particular and they do retain a lot of their nutritional value. There is often risks though either way. With fresh fruits and vegetables there's the risk of getting e coli or salmonella from contaminated items. Then with canned products we have to watch for BPA.

Fresh fruits are very healthy. Canned vegetables still contain a good deal of their nutrients. Either way though as long as a person is trying to eat their vegetables, whether fresh, frozen, or canned it's a good thing. Some type of vegetable is better than no vegetables at all.

Canned vegetables lose some of their very essential nutrients. These are especially low in vitamins, compared to fresh fruits and vegetables. If you can, try and buy as much of fresh vegetables. If you just can't you will need to compromise on the quality and freshness by using canned vegetables.

Thanks for your suggestions. I appreciate your thoughts. I have been doing some reading this evening and have found information that shows that vegetables are usually canned at their peak, so even with the heating process they are able to retain nutrients. Fresh fruits and vegetables may not be as healthy as we think depending on the time frame of peak and how long until we purchase and eat them. The greatest way to get the most nutrients is to have our own garden and get everything as soon as they are ready.

I use a lot of canned vegetables and I am very healthy. They still have a lot of the nutrients and are much more convenient and cheaper than fresh. About the only fresh vegetable I have a lot is broccoli and I steam even that since it is supposed to be better for you if cooked rather than raw. The only problem with canned vegetables is if you have to watch how much salt(sodium) you have in your diet because of high blood pressure or something. Even then you can get no salt added canned vegetables but they might cost a little more. I eat a lot of canned green peas and green beans.

Some men just like things a certain way. Fresh vegetables are the best way to go but alot of folks who have gardens can alot of it so it isn't wasted and they can use it during the Winter. I am not real big on canned vegetables although I recall eating alot of my grandmother's green beans and tomatoes that had been canned. They were always very good.

Yeah having a garden is a good thing and a person definitely wouldn't want to let that food go to waste. Starting and maintaining a garden is a lot of work. Glad you were able to enjoy your grandmother's vegetables.

Well the best like you say is fresh.. then there is frozen.. those that you can do yourself or those you can buy. Then canned. Canned has value not much though considering what they do to them to put them in that can.. Cooks most of the value out and when they put in the chemicals to keep them from spoiling makes it bad.
Thing is some companies are finding different ways to can them. They are better than they were years ago.. still is last in my list. I have convinced my daughter to switch to frozen from the store.. and said we don't have to cook a whole bag, take what is needed and put the rest back for the next meal.

Yeah I agree with you. We will have to start looking into buying more frozen vegetables. And when our finances allows it we can buy fresh ones. But like you mentioned we will have to do the same put some back and use it for the next meal. This way we are wasting any and it will last longer.

Canned vegetables is convenient. Besides, fresh ones can sometimes be hard to find especially if you go to the grocery late in the afternoon. Well, at least that's case here where I'm from. People buy fresh things in the morning so by the time it's afternoon, most are no longer available and the remaining ones aren't that fresh anymore. And I think there are canned veggies that have on the label the nutritional value of it. Yeah, nothing beats the fresh ones, but it's better to have canned ones than not having veggies at all.

I agree with you. Canned vegetables are very convenient. Yeah we need to get our vegetables. It would be nice if we could all afford to eat organic and natural food of every type. But for many families it's not financially possible. I hope that with time I can at least try to do better about saving so that we can buy more fresh fruits and vegetables. I should just remind myself that it is better for our health in the long run.
