Why bother?

Yesterday an acquaintance on a facebook group offered to share some kefir grains. As they're something I'd like to try out I sent a message back saying I'd love to try someone if she would be willing to share, and that I'd pay all her costs, obviously. This morning she replied, saying 'Are you sure you can't get them in a local health food shop or in the city? Shipping them would be hard'. If I could get them in a local health food shop I wouldn't be asking, would I? And a trip to the city would take me two days, rather excessive for kefir grains. If she doesn't want to share, fair enough. But why offer in the first place?! I would have got them from eBay and not bothered her, as I originally planned, had she not offered. Now I feel as if I've asked something that's unreasonable. I'm stupidly cross and I know I'm probably over reacting but I feel a little hurt. Why make an offer if you don't want to follow through?

I don't even know what a kefir grain is. However, I wouldn't offer if I wasn't prepared to send. I'd send you some but as I said, I don't know what they are!

Most of my thoughts are pretty liquid ones.

It might be revolting, but I'd like to give it a try.

Probably offering them to local Facebook friends and didn't expect someone from so far away to want them.

It was posted on a group as part of a discussion, and for a certain group of people who are geographically pretty central.

Try not to beat yourself up. The onus is on the other person in this situation. What a cretin though to make the offer? People can be so strange. Another reason I avoid Facebook like the plague.

I DID beat myself up over it. Which is daft really. I mean, it's not my fault she's saying one thing and wanting to do another. Water under the bridge now though. And I WON'T be interacting again.

She kind of went back on her word. They say the kefir grains are a symbiotic culture of yeasts and bacteria and are used to make kefir.I have never heard of it before.

Indeed. I was quite hoping to make some kefir, but now I shall have to buy some grains on eBay when I get round to it. You can get a milk or a water version, and I'm nt sure which I prefer the idea of. I might try both!

I have no idea what kefir grains are? Seems strange of her to offer to share but then retract her offer, unless she was inundated with requests? If you can get them elsewhere, then stuff her and do it. Tell her she can shove her grains where the sun don't shine! For all I know, that's might be what you would do with them anyways. lol

You make a fermented drink with them, which I quite fancy having a go at as it's reputed to be very good for you. Could be revolting of course, but you don't know till you try .... I can get them from eBay, which will be what I'll do now.

Oh, yes, I agree with you, why make an offer if you don't follow through. I know a family member that had a whole bunch of yarn (like a half of pickup load). She kept saying she wanted to get rid of it or then she was going to sell it. When another family member and I wanted to take some, she's like "No, somebody else might need that color." Ended up she ended giving all this yarn to some one else. So it was a good thing I didn't tell some one I could get them some yarn, then I would have been the person who made an offer and not follow through.

How does someone collect half a pickup load of yarn? Wow! Sounds like she enjoyed the power having this whole load gave her if she kept mentioning it to you then wouldn't let you take any. You'll know for future not to rely on her if she offers something.

Yes, indeed. Why offer if there's no follow-through.

I can get elsewhere easy enough, eBay. But I'm irritated to be made to feel that I was asking something unreasonable. Won't ask again.

I don't blame you...get your hopes up then change her mind? Not! I wouldn't make an offer I couldn't back up....and I have at times made offers then wished I wouldn't have but I always follow through..

You're quite right. If you go around making offers that you don't follow through you'll quickly get a reputation for unreliability
