A Thanksgiving surprise!

My friends know I do home health with another myLotter, Maggiepie. Now, before Meals on Wheels used to deliver a special dinner for her, but she no longer gets Meals on Wheels. Well, I was wondering what I could do to make the day at least a LITTLE special. Then, on Wednesday, on Freecycle, someone posted that they had the end of a ham from a spiral cut ham to rehome. AND, it wasn't out in the back of beyond - okay - south Austin. Well, I guess my "my client won't have anything special" plea touched her heart and she picked me. She called, we arranged the time and I headed out to her place. Now, it might NOT have been in south Austin, but it was pretty remote! Remember, I grew up in Austin, and even 20 years ago, this was not housing! Heck, I barely saw any houses once I got into the neighborhood! These places had scrub all around, only the driveways and mailboxes to show that people lived there! Still, I found the place, got the meat out of the mailbox (she said she generally hung her freecycles on the mailbox but thought the meat might be too tempting for the critters - I bet they have bobcats out there! I brought it home, put it in the fridge and in the morning I then took it and some other leftovers over to Maggie's. I didn't tell her what I had done, so her Thanksgiving feast was a surprise! I wrote and thanked the lady for picking me and she said that I should be praised for getting the ham and then fixing the whole meal for her. The ONLY thing Maggie had to supply was the cranberry sauce, but she had some left and she finished it up, so that might not be there for her seconds! Meanwhile, the roomie at home was fixing our own ham for our dinner - in the crockpot because the oven is broken - and I put in for one of those yesterday and got that as well!

And I pronounced it yummy! (Except perhaps for the cranberry sauce, which might almost have seen last year's Thanksgiving Day.... I should mention that to me, every day is a thanks-giving day...because God gave me as a literal answer to a prayer ("Please give me a true friend"). He gave me Leah. Happy Thanksgiving Day everyone! Oops--mistyped that!!! I must've had Leah on my mind. Sorry Elic! I really can mess up things. Yeesh. Go on, Mags, do yer typical dumbo thing; write a touching tribute to yer best friend, then dedicate it to the wrong person?! "Shoot me, oh, shoot me now...." I just wish I were at the age where such maroonity is overlooked, or even thought to be charming. The really neat thing is, I KNOW Elic. She'll forgive me; she's sweet that way. Love, Maggiepie

Such a sweet thing for you to do and such a sweet thing for that freecycler to do and pick you for the ham. Now am I hearing this right, you also got a free stove? or will be getting one?

I will be! They are getting a new one delivered on Dec 3rd, and I have lived without an oven (well, we have one of those toaster ovens) for over 6 months, and I guess my story and willingness to wait, won it for us!

That is great. We have an extra portable burner that was like I think $20.00. We've had to live without one or two burners on the stove working, but to not have the oven or stove, it'd drive me wild. I try to avoid the microwave as much as possible, and don't eat very many things that can be put in the toaster oven. It's not too long of a wait, afterall.

we got this fancy range and the cats ruined the simmer burner almost before it had been installed, I think we got to use it ONCE!

And there is another thing for you to be thankful for--that you have the will, the resources and the opportunity to help someone else. That is a gift in your life as well as Maggiepie's and I pray you are blessed with many more opportunities!

So do I. I've always liked to help people, but so many times they turn around and stab you in the back.

Wow, that's awesome! So you got the ham for Maggie and a crock pot for you. I did read that right, right? Or did you get an oven on Freecycle? When I bought my other house in southcentral Virginia, it had no oven. I couldn't afford one right away and my sons were living there for awhile so I bought a small microwave oven, an electric skillet, a toaster and a two-burner hotplate. Actually, I got most of those things on sale so that was cool. They made out quite well with those things. If it were just my older son, I think only the microwave would have been used but my younger son likes to cook so he used everything. They did just fine without a big oven. (I couldn't because I like baking those turkeys and they just won't fit anywhere else except maybe one of those big turkey fryers and I'm not about to mess with one of those. I've heard too many horror stories about them.) I've since bought an inexpensive ($400.00) stove to, hopefully, give that house more sales appeal. I've been thinking of getting one of those NuWave ovens. I believe they are convection ovens? Infrared or something like that. They can cook a relatively large bird in half the time of a conventional oven, so I've been told by a friend of mine who uses one. One of these days, maybe I'll get one but, for now, with money being so tight, I'll just stick with what I have (an electric stove). So, how was your Thanksgiving? Quiet here, just my son, husband and me but with me still being dizzy, I really didn't want to entertain guests. But, I did cook the traditional meal with a lot of help from my son. (Hubby was hiding in his bedroom getting drunk, just too busy watching TV to help with anything. Typical.)

I got ham for Maggie and an oven for me - won't be available until December, but its an OVEN! Roomie was baking muffins in the toaster oven while the ham was in the crockpot and we were making bread in the bread maker. She boiled potatoes and steamed veggies on the top of the range, we can light the fire so the range top has been working.

Surprises like that are always nice, and it certainly sounds like you have a lot to be tahnkful for. wonderful! Thanksgiving for us was simple this year. We just ordered in from Swiss Chalet, since we're up here in Canada. No turkey, but the chicken was wonderful! All the other fixings, too. Something called a Festive Special, so it came with a little box of chocolates for eacho of us, with each meal. The funny thing about Thanksgiving is that I know which of my friends have broken ovens. LOL You, our friend Nora, and then there's us! Our oven is screwed up too. We have a small crockpot, that could probably hold a couple of cornish game hens.

We love the crockpot! It does so many things. In October I saw about crockpotting a ham, and that was like a lightening strike! I knew what we would do for Thanksgiving!

I'm just amazed that part of a ham was something on freecycle. Big ups to you for being so considerate to her.

I've seen food offered before, I've actually gotten some a few times, but this and some veggies are the freshest I've gotten. I fixed another plate for her today and put the rest in her cooler. Don't know what happened to her new weekend person.

That is such a great thing that you did for Maggiepie and I have to say that it sounds like something that I would do if I knew someone that wasn't going to be able to have a special Thanksgiving meal. I actually know that I would go out of my way to make sure that everyone I know has a way to be able to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday. I'm sure that Maggiepie enjoyed her meal and seeing as how she is a member on the site, I'm sure that we will be hearing from her soon about her great Thanksgiving surprise.

The roomie asked if I knew anyone who didn't have any place to go before we sat down to eat, but I couldn't think of anyone... well, anyone who could get here.
