Yes it is the full moon day of Hindu month Kartik; it is important to people in Punjab as it is birthday of Guru Nanak.
For us; I mean people of Odisha state in India it has special significance.
Long back the businessmen from here known as ‘Sadhaba’ used to go far countries like Java, Sumatra, Borneo etc in sailboats; this day was most suitable for them for journey via sea.
In memory of that we sail small toy boats made from trunk of plantain we keep a small lighter wick lamp in it and float them in the nearest sea, river or pond after bathing there, those who don’t get this, use ready-made boats of plastic or thermocole; those who can’t go river, pond or sea float a boat in a water tub.

My son and his wife took my granddaughter to river near our home, so that she knows about this.
I and Kalyani because of health issues floated boats in our bath tub.
Let’s keep the traditions alive; let us keep our kids alert about all these.
There is fair in the city.
Many go to picnics.
My great grandfather had made a Shiv temple on a hill long back in 1904.
A fair is held at its base today.
Many persons will visit this temple at hill top, they have to walk among trees; there are no steps to go there.
Many will cook and eat a sort of picnic.
Every year I used to go too.
Indian friends, is this day important for you, any rituals you observe on this day?
Friends abroad; do you have any similar festival?
Do you go to picnics?
Do you visit fairs?
Please respond and share your comments and opinions on this.

prof, good to hear about your traditional activities, even though you have health issues you are following the traditions, it clearly shows that you are giving importance to the tradition. We don't have this kind of festival, We are celebrating the lighting festival, During this month, we will lit the light in the morning and evening times and keep it in our houses, most of the houses in our place seems to be a palace with this lights, we decorate the lights throughout our houses and get happiness while seeing it.

Yes, other than being GURUNANAK JAYANTHI, it is also called VISHNU DEEPA DAY. Also it is called VYAS PURNIMA in honor of Maharshi Ved Vyas, and Gowri Purnima. Among some communities, it is called VAN BHOJAN DAY where they have the night meals in a nearby open area.

While we do celebrate festivals like Diwali and Navratras with lot of fervour, we are not following traditional practices during many of our festive days, may be because we were not celebrating much in our families, or due to lack of awareness. It is a good idea to teach our children such practices and why they are followed.

Thanks a ton for sharing this discussion. Yes Kartik Purnima is a very auspicious day and especially for the Orissa residents, its significance is even more. i still remember how as a kid i used to said small boats at 4am and it was a very thrilling experience then.
Besides the tradition is still alive today which is a great thing. I am for sure going to visit Baliyatra and i hope there would many new stuffs to look out for this time.
What say?
